Egyptian police have stormed the office of a human rights organisation in Cairo, to arrest a democracy campaigner. Thursday’s early morning raid, at the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR), has been condemned by activist groups. They claim it is part of a push to crush dissent. Police targeted the office to arrest Mohamed Adel, according to a security official. Adel is wanted in connection with protests against a law that heavily restricts the right to demonstrate.A video released by the organisation showed the aftermath of the police raid, during which computers and other equipment were confiscated, according to ECESR staff.In a statement, 10 Egyptian civil society groupssaid five other activists were also detained but later released, describing the midnight raid as an “unprecedented escalation.”
