ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Hundreds of student protesters clashed with police in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Saturday as they demonstrated against reconstruction plans that include part of their campus at the Middle East Technical University (METU). Riot police used smoke grenades and water cannon to disperse the crowd. The municipality plan opposed by the students involves building a road across the university campus and uprooting a large number of trees in the area. The Middle East Technical University (METU) campus has one of the largest green spaces in the capital city. In May, a peaceful protest in Istanbul's Gezi Park against plans to reconstruct the area turned into a broader show of anger at Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government. The demonstrations at the Middle East Technical University came six months before local elections, the start of a voting cycle which also includes a presidential election next August -
