The European Parliament's Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee set up the Electronic Mass Surveillance of EU Citizens Inquiry after leaked CIA documents indicated that the United States had been tapping into the EU citizen database known as SWIFT. The leaked documents suggest that, through the tapping of phone and computer networks, the US and the UK have been collecting the personal information of citizens across the globe. A former US National Security Agency employee turned whistleblower has told the EU inquiry that he is speaking out because he witnessed grave injustices, illegality and wrong-doing and first hand.
