Cataracts are a clouding of the vision that comes with age. The word cataract comes from the Latin word "cataractes" which means waterfall since, to the naked eye, the white streaks a cataract forms in the lens look like a waterfall. The clouding happens when the lens, which helps the eye to focus what it's seeing onto the retina, starts to opacify with an accumulation of old cells. Unlike other parts of the body, the lens does not get rid of the non viable cells so they build up over time and make the lens less transparent. Poor nutrition, diabetes, and smoking are some factors that have been linked to an increased risk for cataracts but age is still the biggest factor. The best way to try to prevent cataracts is to eat a healthy diet, exercise, and don't smoke. Some studies in India have found that increasing vitamin C intake reduced a person's risk for cataracts but this was not found to be the case in the US. Dr. Mark Savant is a General Internist.
