Mumbai’s famous dabbawalas (lunch box catrreiers) have decided to support social activist Anna Hazare over the Lokpal Bill issue. They will not do service on 16th August and proposes to start their hunger strike on that day.

The President of Mumbai Jeevan Dabbawala Association, Sopan Mare stated, “We support Anna Hazare in his fight for a strong Lokpal Bill. On August 16, when Annaji would go on a fast, we have decided to show our support by asking our customers not to give tiffins for delivery.”

About 2, 00,000 homemade lunch packs are transported by 4,500 to 5,000 dabbawalas every day across Mumbai. They provide Tiffins at a very low fee and with surprising punctuality. But on 16th August, they will not deliver Tiffins to their customers.

Sopan Mare also said, “We will meet our customers next week in this regard. However, it is upto the customers whether they want to extend support by not giving tiffin boxes on August 16.”

Earlier, the dabbawalsa had also supported Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev in his fight against the corruption.
