From : GeekBrief.TV | Video Podcast (iPod)
When Apple released the iPhone, the praise was consistent and so was the criticism. The praise was about the revolutionary interface and the criticism was about the lack of 3G, GPS and Copy and Paste. Apple made 3G and GPS happen, but they said Copy and Paste isn't a priority. The first place we saw copy and paste for iPhone was on an application called MagicPad. The guy behind that app, Juviwhale, met a college student, Zac White. Zac White figured out how to implement copy and paste on any iPhone App without violating the iPhone SDK agreement. Zac started a non-profit, open-source community project called OpenClip. When a developer adds the OpenClip framework to an iPhone app, that app gains copy and paste functionality. On Brief 410, I demo copy and paste on the iPhone using un-released versions of Twittelator, WordPress and MagicPad. Apple forbids applications from running in the background because it would take up too much of the iPhone's resources. Also, developers are not allowed to create plug-ins that make their apps work with other apps on the iPhone. Zac White's Open Clip framework uses a shared space on the iPhone. Any application that includes Open Clip can then access the common area and write to it, and read from it, thereby enabling copy and paste between participating apps. The key to making OpenClip work is adoption. Zac's framework is non-profit. It's open-source, and his project makes the iPhone even more useful. I recorded an audio interview with Zac so if you want to listen, it's here.

 From : WebbAlert
Can't see the video? Watch this video now in a browser or download this video now. InfoWorld did an experiment using a monitoring tool and found that thirty five percent of the people they checked seemed to have DOWNGRADED their Vista systems to X-P. Google announces the Free the Airwaves campaign. They want to use the white spaces in the FCC spectrum to bring high speed internet to the country. Broadcasters think it will interfere with their signals, and GigaOm points out it's really in Google's best interest to have more people surfing the web... Mobile Me continues to stumble along. Apple is offering two more months free for customers as a thanks for patience. But over at TechCrunch, Michael Arrington says he'd rather have it work than have the free months... More and More Americans are putting down their newspapers and getting their news from the web - but television remains king. You can have a bathing suit like Michael Phelps. But, and no offense to you of course, you probably can't swim like he does... Bono was playing some yet to be released U2 music just a little too loud. Now it's on the internet. Manager Paul McGuinness is probably pitching a fit. Want to get every episode of WebbAlert automatically delivered to your iTunes software, or another great player? Click here!

 From : GeekBrief.TV | Video Podcast (iPod)
The Discovery Channel has Shark Week. GBTV has Innovation Week. I frequently get asked to explain more about what we mean when we talk about things like Augmented Reality (AR) and Human Interface Design (HID). On Brief 409, I cover Augmented Reality. Augmented Reality is all about added a layer (or multiple layers) of real-time data on top of what's happening all around us. You can look at a building or a car in front of you. With augmented reality, your phone (or another device) will have software that analyzes what you're looking at and provide information about it. You'll be able to look through your camera and learn everything you'd want to know about when a building was constructed, who designed it, what businesses are inside, etc. Mac Funamizu is a designer who thinks about some of the ways devices will augment reality in the future. Microvision is adding augmenting reality for drivers by displaying information on car windshields. They're also working on Virtual Retinal Display technology that will project HD images and text onto the retina of a viewer's eye. The guy in the blooper section is John P., President and CEO of Woopra.com. He wanted to read the teleprompter.

 From : WebbAlert
Can't see the video? Watch this video now in a browser or download this video now. Netflix has recovered from their three-day outtage, and is shipping flix to hungry fans once again. Customers seem to have been generally patient, but the down-time will still cost them millions. Their last major outage was in March. Apple was fleetingly worth more than even Google last week - but Microsoft is still king of the tech hill. Google may soon be surging back with an actual shipping "Android Phone" as early as October. You can (maybe?) see it in action in video here. The first Android phone will allegedly made by HTC for T-Mobile customers. Blogs.com is launching soon, perhaps today. If it's not up yet when you read this, check out these screen shots. The record labels have actually been beaten in court by someone they mistakenly sued for file sharing. They'll have to cover the legal expenses of their victim. We'll see where the countersuit goes. But the labels haven't completely lost their ability to maim and destroy. Pandora could be in dire trouble due to inflated new fees that the government is requiring that pay record labels for its online radio service. The TSA is now allowing certain laptap bags to go through x-ray systems without first disgourging their contents. But is the new policy more confusing than it's worth? Unless your name is Ivy Bean, Facebook now has at least one member who's older than you. From : GeekBrief.TV | Video Podcast (iPod)
NBC is failing to live up to the Olympic ideal. We want what we want, where we want it, when we want it. Old media seems to be hanging on. They're using technology to inch them forward, but it's slow going. The PhotoFast CR-9000 offers a work-around for getting a solid state drive for under $900. Research is getting us closer to real live invisibility cloaks. Harry Potter may be a reality soon. Okay, I'm joking...but, seriously! Here at GBTV HQ, we've been tracking the Alter Ego project. It's technology that aims to provide incredibly lifelike facial expressions by placing a bunch of dots on an actor, and those dots are interpreted by cameras. Here are several clips of their latest work. Cali's Shirt Courtesy of RealcookN.TV Go there.

 From : WebbAlert
Can't see the video? Watch this video now in a browser or download this video now. Gmail went down! And not a failwhale in sight to tell us it happened. Most people complained using twitter Google continues to dominate search with 70% of the market. And Facebook is the largest social network - and continues to grow. The Kindle continues to do well - analysts have doubled their previous predictions as to what they'll sell in 2008. Nintendo has a treasure of creativity in Shigeru Miyamoto. They value him so much that they've asked him not to talk to the press about his hobbies or interests for fear other gaming companies will try and predict what the next game will be. When it comes to broadband, the US moves pretty slowly along the information highway. As a country we average about 2.3 mbps. Compare that to Japan - they have almost 64 mbps. Rhode Island is the speediest at 6.8 mbps and Alaska is the slowest with a mere 0.8mbps. Twitter is attracting spammers - so they've put a cap on the number of people you can follow. From : Boing Boing TV
Can't see the video? Watch this video now in a browser or download this video now. Boing Boing tv's UK-based music correspondent Russell Porter interviews -- and coaxes an epic street performance from -- Beardyman, the human beatbox from Brighton. This dude is a totally unassuming normal guy who can flip a switch in his brain to make crazy perfect funky human beatbox sounds come out of his mouth. The ladies dig it, as you'll see around 08:13, when he lets loose on the mic with a flock of blonde birds surrounding him. I blogged about Beardyman in 2007 when this crazy cooking video hit the 'tubes. If you're in the mood for still more of him doing his thing, below is a popular YouTube video in which Beardyman shows up at some stuffy academic conference, and poses as a lecturer before breaking out into beats.

 From : Boing Boing TV
Can't see the video? Watch this video now in a browser or download this video now. Boing Boing tv's retro-tech correspondent Todd Lappin of Telstar Logistics submerges us in WWII history on the supersized submarine USS Pampanito. This Balao-class ship was built in 1943, and today one of her younger volunteer caretakers schools us on all the gadgets, gizmos, and old-school technology that kept this baby cruising to Pearl Harbor and back. Did you know that subs like this couldn't submerge for more than 24 hours back then, because they'd run out of battery life? Think of it like this, Gen-Y-ers, that's like when your iPhone 3G slides into "red" mode, because you've been twittering too much. Only with people inside. And big guns to shoot bad guys. Pampanito trivia: she's named after this little fishie, prized as a seafood delicacy. Wait, a sushi ingredient? Doesn't sound like a great idea for a WWII military ship! Shot for BBtv by Eddie Codel, during the Long Now Foundation's Mechanicrawl. Previously on BBtv: * Multi-millenial Mechanical clocks (Long Now Mechanicrawl pt. 1) * WWII Boatpunk: Aboard the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, with Todd Lappin (pt. 2)

 From : WebbAlert
Can't see the video? Watch this video now in a browser or download this video now. It's been one month since Apple released the iPhone 3G and the App store. Over 60 million apps have been downloaded - it's averaging out to about 1 million dollars a day. Steve Jobs believes it could eventually be a billion dollar a year business. And while he was talking apps - he also confirmed that kill switch. Microsoft wants Hollywood to make content exclusively for the Zune. Maybe some studio execs will bite - a lot of content providers don't like Apple dominating the market. But on the other hand, it may be better for everyone involved if there are several viable outlets, instead one king of the hill. The Voyager "Refresh" will have visual voicemail - but unfortunately, Verizon customers will have to pay for the service. If you want to know who Obama chooses as his running mate, you can sign up to have the campaign text or email you as soon as he makes the decision. Some people think it's embracing tech savvy voters. Others say it's more about celebrity than political leadership. Scientists are one step closer to making things invisible. Unfortunately it's only a small step - the materials they've created only work in limited wavelengths - so they can't hide giant things like buildings or people. But at least you know they're working on it. General Motors and an Ohio state team are working with BMW to test thermoelectric devices that will convert the excess heat coming out of your tailpipe into electricity. That means more fuel efficient cars. Want to get every episode of WebbAlert automatically delivered to your iTunes software, or another great player? Click here!

 From : WebbAlert
Can't see the video? Watch this video now in a browser or download this video now. Yahoo announced that they'll let users opt out of having advertisements tailored to them. Google and Microsoft have already been letting consumers opt out of this kind of tracking for a while. But analysts doubt that many consumers actually bother to. Few people are very aware of the practice, and fewer still will know how to opt out of it. And besides - a lot people figure that if they have to see ads, it's better to see ads that they might actually be interested in. If you like using Google Translate, and you have an iPhone - they now have a mobile version for you. Google Translate Mobile Service can translate phrases between twenty four languages - including Romanian, Hindi, Mandarin and Japanese. Despite the fact that MySpace and Facebook have been making strides to gain Japanese market share, they can't seem to catch up with the popularity of the Japanese social network, Mixi. According to ComScore, Facebook only had a little more than 500,000 unique visitors in June - Mixi, in comparison had 12.7 MILLION. Techcrunch thinks Mixi's had more time to gain customer loyalty - and tailors themselves to the culture. Scientists at Purdue University have revealed a new technique that can tell them not only who a fingerprint belongs to, but WHAT that person has been touching. Brian Cox talked about this at TED. And, on September 10th, CERN is firing up the Large Hadron Collider. For a rap version of what it does and a little bit about particle physics: Click here. If you remove Garfield from the comic strip, Jon Arbuckle becomes a lonely man living in the suburbs, trying to cope. Soon there will be a book, and Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield supports it. From : GeekBrief.TV | Video Podcast (iPod)
A GeekBrief.TV viewer who traveled to China told me Geek Brief is banned there. I don't know if that's still true, but I've decided the Olympics being in Bejing is more of a good thing than a bad thing because the world is paying attention to Chinese restrictions of freedom. I also don't want to miss the girl's gymnastic competition. This Brief is an interview with Mike Mann from Digital-Rapids.com. Digital Rapids is providing the streaming technology to NBC that will make live coverage of multiple Olympic games possible to an extent we've never seen before. Here's a quote from the Digital Rapids press release: Digital Rapids' DRC-Stream encoding and streaming solutions will enable NBC Olympics' unprecedented live and on-demand online coverage of the Beijing Olympics. 2200 hours of video will be streamed live on the Internet at NBCOlympics.com, primarily encoded from video feeds into web-friendly streams through the DRC-Stream systems. Streams will be encoded in the VC-1 compression format for a viewing experience powered by Microsoft Silverlight technology. The encoded live streams will also be archived for viewers to watch on-demand. Digital Rapids Transcode Manager, the enterprise-class solution for scalable, high-volume media file transcoding, will be used to convert affiliate-provided content between compression and file formats for U.S. domestic distribution. By the way, when we shoot stuff like this, we put it in the experimental category. Skype is getting better and better, but it still isn't perfect. We also need to really evaluate the angles we're using for live interviews like this. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

 From : GeekBrief.TV | Video Podcast (iPod)
A UK Web site called Mobilefun is selling an iPhone case with a solar panel built in. It also works with the iPod Touch. I got a DearCali.com question about backing up Firefox bookmarks. We use a plug-in called Foxmarks that synchronizes bookmarks for any computer you add it to. The Chaos Computer Club created a tool for reporters and athletes traveling to China. It's a USB drive with applications that allow travelers to override Chinese blocks. The CamBall is a video camera and recorder packed into a black plastic sphere about the size of a ping pong ball. I kind of want one, but they're only available in Korea. Cue the photo of the remote controlled cow. This episode was produced and edited by Max Murphy from MacNewsWeekly.com. Max is on a 3000 mile road trip with his dad and brother. Our apartment marks the halfway point. They're headed to New Orleans, Atlanta and then back to New York. You can follow Max on Twitter at Twitter.com/MacNewsWeekly
