Once again, Raffaella Traniello and her pupils (now eight year old) from the Roncaglia Primary School, went under water to tell us a little stop animated story. This movie was especially made for Filmfesken, the junior section of the Nordkapp Film Festival, where it won the first prize. Galerie Gmurzynska in Zurich, Switzerland currently presents new works by Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The exhibition is Fernando Botero s first solo show at the gallery. On display are drawings and paintings from Botero s Circus series, three bronze sculptures of various themes, and as a counterpoint works from Botero s Abu Ghraib series. Michael says: "The ribbons and line work in it were created by shooting lasers against different pieces of glass and recording the distortion with a DV camera." "The globules of color were made by blasting light through different prisms directly into the lens of the camera. The materials were layered together digitally to create the end result." Xologola seems different every time you watch it: kind of like the images are trying to suggest you something but you're not able to get it. Or maybe it's the opposite: you try desperately to give things a familiar shape, but the images won't allow it. "Xologola was made a year ago, last October", said director Michael Robinson. "It's made up of scans and pictures of branches, broken and scratched glass, and digitally painted textures, with no real intent for recognizable forms." And about the sound: "it was made by my friend Bish with percussion on a table of glass. I was scraping strings, and the final recording came out gamelan-esque." If you liked these shorts and would like for more, maybe something a little less abstract, you can check Oomper Oomper out at HD Fest. Or wait for my post about the two "parts" of that movie. Besides photos of the moon, the Natural History Museum has a lot of dioramas filled with animals that have been taxidermied. Check out this slideshow of photos from my Natural History Museum Adventure or go browse the set on flickr and tell me which photos you like and which ones creep you out. At one point, looking at a herd of taxidermied elephants from Asia, I realized that around 1920, a group of guys had gone to China, shot a bunch of elephants and transported them back to the states. Elephants are not small and this is in the days before semi-trucks. How did they do it?
