Anders Hejlsberg and Guy Steele: Concurrency and Language Design

From : Channel 9
This is the second year I've been lucky enough to take part in the cross-platform software engineering conference JAOO. Like last year, I was very fortunate to get to sit down with a few key players in the programming languages design field and watch several technical presentations that span the industry and problems we face as software developers. One of the truly great things about JAOO is that it is not a product-focused conference: it's about programming first and foremost and enables the sharing of perspectives and ideas among the world's best and brightest programming minds. As you can imagine, I, like many technical types here at Microsoft, am a huge fan of JAOO. Thank you Trifork!!! In this conversation Microsoft Technical Fellow and Chief Architect of C# Anders Hejlsberg sits down with programming language design legend and computer scientist Guy Steele (creator of Scheme and expert in several languages ranging from LISP to Java). I think Guy is one of the smartest people I've ever met. The topic of conversation is the elephant in the modern general purpose programmer's living room: Concurrency. With today's widely-used general purpose languages like C++, Java, C#, VB, Ruby etc it's hard to express parallelism in productive ways. Anders et al are working on both language enhancements to C# and VB.NET and BCL support (Parallel Extensions to .NET for example). Today, Guy is working on a mathematical language (domain specific as opposed to general purpose) and runtime, Fortress, that is so concurrent it makes it hard for programmers to even write sequential code! Listen in to two of the programming industry's most successful thinkers and get a sense of their perspectives on the future of general purpose programming languages now that Concurrency and Parallelism are entering the development status quo. Enjoy. More JAOO coverage to come.

		 From : Channel 9
What are the platform infrastructure details behind the Mesh technologies? Corporate Vice President of Live Platform Services, David Treadwell, will be spilling all the beans in his PDC keynote in just a few weeks, but in this Q&A he gives us a sneak peek. David explains how there’s so much more to Mesh than just the user experience, and how he and his team will be revealing the underlying particulars that fall below the line at PDC – the platform infrastructure that helps developers build stellar Software + Services apps. And did Tread mention bits that will be given out at the PDC? I think he did, but you gotta listen to find out more about what we affectionately call the goods.

		 From : Channel 9
Naysawn Naderi takes us through manual testing in Visual Studio Team System 2010. Naysawn shows off how the manual testing capabilities allow not only for better authoring and execution of manual tests, but can also be a tool to help automate portions of manual tests as well. Finally, Naysawn shows how to turn a manual test into a coded test which can then be fully automated. This "Humanized Screencast" is best viewed at fullscreen using the high-quality WMV download.

		 From : Channel 9
Are you tired of constantly setting breakpoints to hone in on a pesky bug? How would you like to be able to step "back in time" through your debugger? The Historical Debugger in Visual Studio Team System 2010 promises to revolutionize your debugging experience. Habib Heydarian takes us through a demonstration of just a few of its capabilities. But wait... there's more! Habib also shows us the new Test Impact Analysis feature his team is working on. With Test Impact Analysis it's possible to determine which of your tests will be... well... impacted by the code changes you're making! Not only does this mean that your unit test suite can run more quickly, but it can also lead to better testing and fewer bugs in software projects. This "Humanized Screencast" is best viewed at fullscreen using the high-quality WMV download.

		 From : Channel 9
Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference 2008 is hitting the Los Angeles scene late October (27-30) and we got our best ad-agency guys and gals together to figure out how best to get the word out. Why? Well, PDC is the place where Developers and Architects can network with their peers, get their questions answered by the Microsofties who are writing the code during Ask-The-Experts and take home all the bits on a 160 GB hard drive-including pre-Beta Windows 7! Yeah, that’s PDC. This is an inside look at one of our early brainstorming sessions… let’s just say things got a little out of hand. But hey, make sure you don’t let it pass you by, register for PDC… NOW!

		 From : Channel 9
Brian Harry, technical fellow at Microsoft, has pretty much become synonymous with Team Foundation Server. He not only leads the Team Foundation Server team in Raleigh, North Carolina, he also has the most widely read blog about what's going on with Team Foundation Server. But even Brian hasn't been saying much about Team Foundation Server 2010 until this week. I sat down with Brian and let him finally spill the beans on what his team has been working on. Brian remains fairly high-level for this interview because there's a lot to cover, but we have six other interviews going live today featuring his program management team going deep on everything he talks about. I even got Brian to talk a bit about his farm which has been keeping him busy outside of work. :-)

		 From : Channel 9
Unlike the other videos in today's series this one doesn't focus specifically on Team Foundation Server 2010. But since I was "in the neighborhood" I dropped by Doug Neumann's office to catch up on the latest tools and samples available for people wishing to migrate to or synchronize with Team Foundation Server. As the popularity of Team Foundation Server continues to rise, so does the demand for migration and synchronization solutions. Doug's team has been working hard to help people in this area. The sites Doug mentions in this interview are: TFS Migration and Synchronization Toolkit Timely Migration TFS to TFS Migration Tool Migration and Integration Solutions

		 From : Channel 9
In addition to being one of the nicest guys I know, Jim Lamb also knows a thing or two about build automation. Jim is the program manager responsible for the Team Build capability of Team Foundation Server. Team Build was one of the biggest areas of improvement for Team Foundation Server 2008, but that hasn't stopped the team from doing even more landmark improvments in Team Foundation Server 2010. Jim shows off how Team Build 2010 will take advantage of Windows Workflow, build agent pooling, distributed asynchronized builds, and two new types of build called "buddy builds" and gated check-ins. From : Channel 9
How can you ensure that a requirement has been sufficiently tested? How do you track the work that goes into a specific feature? How much work is left to do before a feature is completed, and how does that feature relate to bigger scenarios or user stories? Siddharth Bhatia, a senior group program manager for Visual Studio Team System, takes us through an end-to-end example of how Visual Studio Team System 2010 will help an organization manage their requirements throughout the lifecycle of a software project.
IE 8: Compatibility and Versioning

From : Channel 9
As software evolves so to does the need for the newer software to remain compatible with older versions. In the case of IE the notion of backwards compatibility is quite daunting and of supreme importance to the IE team. Consider the millions of web pages that were written to run successfully in older versions of IE. The latest incarnation of IE, IE 8 Beta 2, has a very useful compatibility feature that enables developers and users alike to run IE 8 in a mode that won't break pages that work in IE 6/7. It's as simple as pressing a button. Unlike IE 8 Beta 1, instructing IE to render a page in Compatibility mode does not require a browser restart. This is very cool indeed. I wanted to find out exactly how this new compatibility mechanism works in IE 8 and discuss the complex issue of backwards compatibility and its impact on innovation with IE 8 Program Manager Scott Dickens. Scott is very passionate about compatibility (in fact his thinking up and prototyping ideas about IE 8 compatibility began as a side project which, not surprisingly, turned into a full time job for him). Tune in and learn about how IE 8 compatibility mode works and learn why it works the way it does. Of course, being Channel 9, this conversation unfolds in a natural way and we dig into related topics as well (like JavaScript compatibility versus HTML/CSS compatibility, standards compliance and other interesting topics).

WCF and AIF in Dynamics 2009: Chatting with Michael Merz

From : Channel 9
In this video I’m back on the Advanta campus chatting with Michael Merz, Program Manager for Application Integration Framework (AIF) on the Dynamics AX team. AIF is a standards-based framework that allows you to publish and consume web services. It’s used primarily in integration scenarios when connecting Dynamics AX with other systems. AX also has .NET Business Connector (BC.NET) for integrating with .NET applications. BC.NET is more for client side integration. AIF is all about web services and is completely standards-based. Under the covers AIF takes full advantage of .NET using Windows Communication Foundation (WCF). For more complex integration scenarios AIF can also help expose services using MSMQ and BizTalk. With Dynamics AX 2009, the team ships a bunch of services (about 60 out of the box) that are ready for use. That includes, for example, the more common scenarios like integration with sales orders or customers. AIF allows you to create, read, update and delete those sales orders while maintaining the integrity of the database (i.e. without directly touching the database at all). This is done independent of the transport so when developing you could begin by updating via http and later switch to MSMQ. This can be as simple as enabling the service then “generating” which generates the WCF interface (i.e. WSDL). That web service is then available to be consumed by any standards-based client (including apps written in php, java and naturally any of the languages in Visual Studio). You can also configure the service endpoints to change the binding or authentication parameters. In the video, Michael walks us through using a standard Excel Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) project to consume a AX 2009 sales order service that is exposed using AIF. He also shows us how, by using WS-Addressing in the WCF headers, you can pass a target company for a web service call. By default, AX limits error messages coming back from the server for security reasons. Michael shows us how to configure AX to propagate those errors when you need to see them. Dynamics AX is a rich platform for supply chain management and financials. AIF opens up AX so that ISVs can build on that richness by integrating their own applications. Sometimes when you do that you need to consume a web service exposed by external applications. We see here how you can plug external web services into the AX processes. In this case, Michael shows us how when trying to create a customer in Dynamics AX with a name that has been blacklisted by the US government (“Bin Laden”, for instance. Yikes! :) ) the customer create process calls out to an external web service in the cloud to verify the customer name. This seamless integration of external processes is a boon for ISVs that need those deep integration points. Michael explains how. In order to do this sort of integration you build a Service Reference in the Application Object Tree (AOT) to provide the parameters. AX takes care of much of work by generating the artifacts (compilation, deploying, bundling etc) that are deployed and executed on the server. CLR interop is available in order to use .NET DLLs and their classes. Some code samples are available here: Application Integration Framework Overview (MSDN) Calling the Customer and Vendor Services (Dianne Siebold)

3D View Controls for WPF

From : Channel 9
3D functionality is becoming a more popular component in UI technologies and has been greatly improved in WPF 3.5 SP1. Upon hearing this some people (Niners even) are known to question "what is it good for?" My first answer is that the British Turning Pages application just wouldn't be the same without 3D. Marc Laroche stopped by to talk about another use of 3D in one of Xceed's new controls 3D Views for WPF. Watching Marc move the camera to adjust the display of the data (around 5:25) can give you an idea of where 3D can really be useful. Simply adjusting the position of the camera offers a new perspective rendered dynamically. There is no need to pre-render all of the desired views. This is great stuff but it feels like just the beginning. The more accessible we can make 3D, the more we can become creative and effective with it.

		 From : Channel 9
Dave Campbell, a Microsoft Technical Fellow and SQL Server guru, talks about what his group has been working on and what they will be unveiling at the PDC. Dave is giving a session on data-driven applications that go from the device to the cloud, and the all important reduction in provisioning friction. In this Countdown episode we talk about how cloud-based data services will change the way you develop and deploy applications, and how SQL Server technologies are evolving to help build data-driven solutions that span devices, desktops, servers, and the cloud. Hear how to build applications that can be deployed using SSDS in the cloud or SQL Server on-premises, and learn how to gain insights using the BI capabilities of Microsoft SQL Server. BTW, Mike still can’t believe he’s stumped y’all with his last Hard Hat Challenge. It’s still unsolved if anyone is feeling up for the challenge!

		 From : Channel 9
Okay, okay, maybe we’ve been a little too tight lipped about what we’re going to announce at the PDC this year. We’ve dropped a few hints with some of our recent guests on the show (Amitabh Srivastava, Dave Campbell, Don Box and Chris Anderson, plus John Shewchuck), but folks want to hear more. What news will we have around the Live Mesh application platform and associated services? What about the future of the client platform, including .NET and Silverlight? And how is our services platform relevant to enterprises and ISVs who cater to enterprises? And what about Windows 7?!? Watch this video and get some really big clues. Plus……we’re announcing the very special gift that all PDC attendees will receive: a 160GB external USB2 hard drive with all of the bits! Could “The Goods” get any cooler? They just did!

		 From : Channel 9
In a very special edition, the VP of CIS, joins Mike and Jennifer to talk about what his team will be revealing at PDC (well, he can’t really say that much yet – you’ll just have to go to the PDC to find out his news). An 11 year Microsoft veteran, Amitabh joined Microsoft in 1997 working in our Research group. Now he works for Ray Ozzie, and the PDC is the coming out party for his team and what they’ve been working on in the Services space. Amitabh does give one hint: look at their shoes! P.S. Last week’s Hard Hat Challenge is still out there to be solved. Will you be the smartest of them all?

		 From : Channel 9
SQLSoft+ is all about training for technologies Microsoft is releasing to the world. They are a Microsoft Certified Partner, and thrive by putting themselves in front of the Microsoft train. Often their work requires building training about a product before it is released. How do they do it? SQLSoft+ was the first IT training company to gain the designation Microsoft Partner Solutions Center (MPSC) Sponsor Partner. In addition, they also work with other IT companies to develop trainings for their software offerings. Here, we meet Mark Scott, CTO for SqlSoft+ and learn more about how this small company is helping developers embrace new technologies at rapid speeds. Check out the Microsoft ISV site for more information related to partnering with Microsoft.

Advanced Windows Debugging: An Introduction with Mario Hewardt and Daniel Pravat

From : Channel 9
Software Developers Mario Hewardt and Daniel Pravat understand the complexities of debugging applications that run on Windows. In fact, they understand it so well they wrote a book, Advanced Windows Debugging. They will also be presenting their knowledge at the PDC in October during both the PreCon and regular conference. The PreCon is a chance to learn the ins and outs of windows debugging, how to use various tools, what to look for in your code in terms of buggy patterns and go way deep into the art of native debugging today. It's an incredibly interesting topic and debugging can be very, very hard. With the tools of today, you can find bugs in minutes compared to days. I highly recommend both their book (I now have a copy!) and their PreCon at PDC 08. Do check it out! Here, we talk, at a high level, about the complexities of debugging, common problems that require debugging tools to understand and we get a demo of how to track down a handle leak in less than five minutes. In the end, debuggers will lead you back to your code and point you to the errors of your ways. When compared to the toolset we had just 5 years ago, 2008 is a great year for debuggers! Tune in. Enjoy.

Joshua helped develop the "viewer", the client application that you use to navigate a Photosynth. He discusses how they use JSON for metadata, how they use the synther point cloud to do random sampling to project images in a 3D plane and how the goal of the viewer is to provide an intuitive UX for end users.

		 From : Channel 9
IE 8 Beta 2 is now available! John Hrvatin, Program Manager of Internet Explorer Developer Tools sits down with me to discuss at a high level the new additions to IE 8's developer tools (aka Dev Tools). These include JavaScript performance profiling, CSS profiling and formatting exploration. And, there's more. :) This is a conversation that addresses more than what's new in dev tool world.
