It's been an extremely slow day for gadget news, so I decided to jailbreak my iPhone today (or, rather, Neal's iPhone). I decided to use iFuntastic, recommended by TUAW. If you have your iPhone plugged in before opening iFuntastic, it immediately recognizes it and all all you have to do is click on Unshackle , then follow directions. I installed the BSD Subsystem since many third party apps require it, then I got to the fun part and installed Pool, and Twinkle. I kept getting an error with Labyrinth, but it eventually installed. If you do get an error, try Clear Queue , then try again. Sometimes that helps. I'll be playing and testing with it, and will keep you updated! Remember, jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch voids the warranty and the geniuses will not help you!

When times get tough, investors need to answer a few key questions: which industries are most attractive for investment? What deal structures are investors choosing? Where are sellers expectations? In this podcast, although there was some consensus around the prediction that deal flow in the U.S. will drop below the impressive levels it has achieved in recent years, the expert voices of a panel discussion tackling Opportunities and priorities in a sluggish economy hold true to their panel title, expressing optimism at the opportunities that present in a down market. From manufacturing to distribution and even food processing, all kinds of industries are facing tough decisions about how to continue in the current economic climate. That means opportunities for investors, and that s just in the U.S. Abroad, particularly in Asia, there s still a healthier climate for deals. About deals in Asia, Peter Berger, managing director at SAC Private Capital, says, That s where the dealflow is So, what s going to happen? If we re in the eye of the storm, as CCMP Capital Managing Director Jonathan Lynch says, then it s going to get worse. But with an inexhaustible supply of bad management, even the so-called good times keep turnaround investors like Raquel Palmer at KPS Capital Partners busy. These days, with more shakeouts, they re even busier than usual. In addition to Berger, Lynch and Palmer, panelists included Steven Besen, partner at Shearman Timothy O Hara, managing director and head of global credit business at Credit Suisse; and Hamilton Tony James, president and chief operating officer with The Blackstone Group. The Deal s Private Capital Symposium brought together private equity professionals, angel investors, buyout and venture investors, corporate acquisition professionals, M A advisors and professional services providers. The event took place in New York s Essex House, on May 14, 2008. None of us smart enough to call the bottom in financials or any other industry, says Gary W. Parr, vice chairman at independent investment bank Lazard. Noting the value to investors of structuring deals for a few years of protection before converting to common, Parr says he s seen funds change their practices to keep up with the times. It tells you something about the sophistication of the funds changing very quickly - in a matter of months, from buying common to buying structured securities and secondly it tells you something about time horizon they don t have to worry about performance quarter to quarter. Parr was on-hand to give a keynote talk entitled, The rise of sovereign wealth funds, and Parr took time for this podcast to speak with Jason Lopez about foreign investment in the U.S. and around the globe. (Parr points out that the largest investments by sovereign wealth funds are being made in Europe, not the U.S., although the sovereigns are, for some, cause for concern.) False Alarm in CyberWar by Andrew McCaskey I m firmly on the side of the Air Force - and given their mission in protecting the assets of the country, I m glad to see that they are aggressively preparing for a conflict in cyberspace that never comes. I m no fan of botnets and practices that destroy the openness and trust on the net. But, if there are those with capability and motivation to confront the US in this sphere, then there is an obligation to prepare in this dimension as well. It s a lot better to have it out in the open, for debate and political oversight than to have it buried in some Black Intelligence program. The effect is the same, and some degree of transparency is an obligation to US citizens. There sure has not been enough of that lately. 31 Days of the Dragon 09 May - 16 May www.thedigitallifestyle.com 10 May - 17 May www.digitalhomethoughts.com 11 May - 18 May www.windows-now.com 12 May - 19 May www.windowsconnected.com 13 May - 20 May www.geekstogo.com 14 May - 21 May bink.nu 15 May - 22 May www.mediablab.com 16 May - 23 May www.last100.com 17 May - 24 May www.labnol.org 18 May - 25 May www.notebooks.com These are the active contests this weekend. In today's episode, Leo Laporte drops in (and out) to discuss the future of CNET, the future of Yahoo, and lack of future we'll all have if the Air Force doesn't stop trying to build a real-life Skynet. Also, Leo points out why we should probably all delete our Plaxo accounts, Nintendo gets patent trolled, and can we leave Twitter? At least for one day?
