Experiment of the Week
A lifelong fascination with science, combined with an uncontrollable urge to teach has led me on adventures ranging from excavating dinosaur bones in Wyoming to watching whales off the coast of Mexico. During my thirteen years at the Memphis Museum, I wrote and taught classes in geology, biology, chemistry, archaeology and physics. In 1987, I decided it was time for a change and put together a traveling, high voltage electricity show, centered on a one million volt Tesla coil. I am picking out some of my favorite science experiments from the early years of my mailing list (1997-2001), and posting them here as videos. I am revising the text versions too, so you can watch the video and print the new text version for your files from my website, www.krampf.com.

TED Theme: Africa: The Next Chapter
In June 2007, TED held its first conference in Africa, titled Africa: The Next Chapter. Thought leaders from across the continent gathered with counterparts from around the globe to build new and lasting collaborations. Talks from TEDGlobal will appear here over the coming year, as part of the vigorous conversation unfolding worldwide, starting with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, George Ayittey, Euvin Naidoo, and William Kamkwamba. Earlier TEDs seeded this conversation: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the pioneering Nigerian Finance Minister, offers a broader take on trade versus aid, while Jacqueline Novogratz promotes a new way of giving, based on investment. Ashraf Ghani, former Finance Minister of Afghanistan, gives a rousing talk that points the way forward out of the wreckage of a failed state. And Iqbal Quadir talks about the emerging economy where cellphones are both infrastructure and currency. And then there's Bono, whose memorable 2005 TED Prize acceptance speech was the inspiration for TEDGlobal2007.

TED Theme: What Makes Us Happy?
It's perhaps the most universal human yearning: to be happy. But this simplest of goals so often eludes us. We're not terribly good, we humans, at knowing what we want. The Pursuit of Happiness was 2004's conference theme, but TED speakers over many years have continued this quest. Daniel Gilbert's astonishing talk shows how we're poor predictors of what will actually make us happy. Stefan Sagmeister shares how great design contributed to his happiest moments, suggesting that the secret may be attention to detail. And Malcolm Gladwell, tongue in cheek, explores what we might learn about the pursuit of happiness through one man's quest to make the perfect pasta sauce. But suppose we understand happiness. How, then, do we find it? Carl Honore says the key is, simply, to slow down. Pastor Rick Warren appeals for a life of spiritual purpose. And Barry Schwartz thinks a little less choice might do us all a lot of good.

TED Theme: A Greener Future?
The environmental debate has traditionally been characterized as a conflict between economic progress and preservation of the planet. Most TED speakers, however, insist that we can have both -- provided we're smart about it. Al Gore, the world's leading voice on the climate crisis, argues that the simple steps we might take to avert disaster would also fuel the economy. Architect William McDonough shows how the power of great design -- working on entire systems rather than local components -- can foster an abundant, sustainable future. And Majora Carter discusses her work to bring green spaces to the blighted South Bronx. Edward Burtynsky's eerily pretty photographs of environmental damage and economic development document humanity's ever-expanding footprint. And biologist E.O. Wilson shares his grandest wish -- that the human community band together to save life on Earth.
