Defeating the Tiger on the Mountain
from YouTube :: Tag // music February 05, 2008
It is arranged from interludes of Beijing Opera. With rapid and forceful rhythms, the music depicts the heros crossing huge forests and snowy lands to defeat the tiger on the mountain, despite of danger and difficulties. The composer makes use of the new techniques invented by himself, including long concordant notes, stopping the strings with many fingers and fast-- fingering-sequence. It incorporates almost all of the difficult techniques in contemporary zheng playing in less than three minutes of music, which in itself is historical event in the world of zheng music. The main accompanying instrument for Rotinese song is the sasandu, a plucked, bamboo tube-zither with a palm leaf resonator. Its ten or eleven strings are usually made from strands of motorcycle coupling wire, and their pitch is adjusted with individual, movable bridges and tuning pegs. The resonator is made by shaping the large fan-leaf of the lontar palm into a pleated hemisphere. Although...
