Microsoft says they'll consider buying Yahoo again with an all new board of directors. Yahoo wants them to just go ahead and make an offer now. Kara Swisher says we should be focusing on what their 2Q report will say on July 22nd instead of all the drama. NBC will use their web and mobile coverage of the Olympic games as a "billion dollar research lab." They'll be analyzing all of the traffic on their website to measure user behavior, and as a way to get data for use in future negotiations with online advertisers. Hey! You can play Scrabble on Facebook now! No, not Scrabulous -- Scrabble. As officially sanctioned by EA and Hasbro. I have a feeling Scrabulous players aren't going to make the switch. The Tesla Roadster is all electric and completely sold out. But you didn't want to wait 30 hours to charge up your car anyway, did you? How about a new Toyota Prius? The next model will feature solar power. No, not a solar powered engine. That's too expensive. Just part of the air conditioning. It's symbolic... of something. Maybe you'd like to find out more about GM's Volt? The Volt uses electricity first, and gas as a back-up. But can GM ship it within two years, as promised? It would help boost their numbers if they could pull it off. Don't forget! I'm looking for your opinion on what drives you up the wall about technology. What's your pet peeve? For $70 a year it will keep three PCs updated with the latest software plus access to the full MS Office Suite. It seems to be a response to Google Documents. Blockbuster changed their minds about Circuit City - they're not going to buy them after all. Their stock went up, Circuit City's went down. Microsoft may buy Yahoo. We've heard this all before, and some people say it isn't true. But it was enough to push Yahoo stock up about 6%. The 3G iPhone won't be sold online - only in brick and mortar stores. And you'll have to activate it there to get that $199 price. As for your old one - you can turn it into a touch if you deactivate the phone. Or give it to a friend. Woah - when you compare it to other services - texting is expensive! One Blogger did the math. Chinese bloggers are using software to write backwards so that it's harder for internet censors to flag them as controversial. Maybe a lot of people will make the jump from T-Mobile, since they just breached their contracts. Oh Noes! Google Calendar is the latest victim of Phishermen! Let's brush up on some common sense rules. Baggage companies are working to create a laptop bag that is "Checkpoint friendly." This is actually pretty exciting though, because it means we may be able to grow earthly plants there someday. Twitter is growing fast ... but are reliability issues going to turn it into the Friendster of micro-blogging? Friendfeed is catching on fast, and people are impressed with its many new features. Lots of Microsoft's customers are ignoring its unloved Vista OS. But who'd'a thought that Intel would be among them? The rumor is all but confirmed. Totally bizarre - the founder of the aptly-named Psuedo.com (which burnt through over $25 million in investor capital) is saying it was a "fake company" - or more accurately, a piece of "conceptual art." With Klimt's, Pollock's, and Picasso's fetching north of a hundred million bucks, maybe investors got a great deal. But the guy's taking no chances - having made his announcement from the safety of a remote Ethiopian town. Oh - and he's kind of blaming the New York Times. Microsoft is apparently paying something north of a $100 million for PowerSet. I was not wowed when I tested the service out in my May 13th episode. But it's a lot cheaper than Yahoo. Google is getting into the game of shifting media from your computer & the Internet to your TV. This is crowded turf, with Microsoft and Apple amongst those staking claims. But is it the start of a frontal assault on the living room? Keeping cops and crooks honest - it's the Pistol Cam! Virgin Mobile launches their answer to the big guys' unlimited flat rate plans - it's only $79.99 and it's pre-paid - no contracts. They're trying to tap into that youth market. It's not really news - Google's been saying for a while that they won't ship until the second half of the year - which still has the fourth quarter in it, doesn't it? There's interesting stuff about the carriers in this article though. The latest presidential debate is taking place on Twitter. It's great that the candidates are reaching out to the tech world - but 140 characters seems like it wll reduce rather than enhance the dialog. Network Solutions - remember them? I did a story on their nasty habit of domain tasting. Now they've changed their tune and say it's a terrible abuse. But they claim they've always been against it. I guess they just forgot. There are now over a billion computers being used in the world. And there'll be two billion in 6 years. What happens when we're finished with them? Young people in the UK are using Google Earth to find homes with swimming pools, then organizing flash mobs via social networks to take a dip. It's like the reverse of the kids in SoCal during the 70s looking for empty pools to skateboard in. The Scottish Parent Teacher Council think that Wikipedia is to blame for students failing classes. There's a lot of wrong information on their, and nobody's verifying it. Maybe kids need to learn not to trust everything they read on the web? One of them is Brad Garlinghouse - the athour of the famous "Peanut Butter Manifesto." Yahoo says it's normal attrition, but in the meantime, someone has created a handy instant Yahoo resignation letter for anyone else who wants to leave. Two men stole $750,000 after getting account numbers and PINs that were stolen when a Citibank server was hacked. Linked-In has some fresh cash now that investors bought 5% of the company for $53MM - that implies a total valuation of $1B. It's one of the highest valuations for a networking site. Om Malik was initially shocked at that number, but after he did the math and compared it with Xing - a similar company - he found that Linked-In's valuation is not out of line with the value public markets are putting on Xing. Videos are about to get longer on YouTube. Wait, is that a good thing? It's only for content partners, and you can only upload a gig. YouTube is courting independent film makers trying to get them to put their films on the site. There's new navigation tools, profile editor and search capability - as well as some changes to the MySpace TV player. Look for a brand new streamlined homepage on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Facebook has tied MySpace with 115MM monthly users worldwide. MySpace is still twice as popular here in the U.S. though, and right now, that's where the ad revenues are. U.K. and European users aren't worth as much... Tomorrow is download day! Mozilla wants to make Firefox 3 the most downloaded piece of first-day software - and put it in the Guinness Book of World Records. Right now the current record holder is... okay, well there isn't one. You can pledge to download it at their website. Firefox 3 is more than parties and world records - tech bloggers are saying that it's better than IE and Safari. For now. It's over. Really? Yes. Microsoft wanted to buy Yahoo's search assets for a billion dollars, but that's not going to happen now... ...because Yahoo cut a deal with Google. Google will now sell and display ads on Yahoo searches which could bring Yahoo 800 million dollars additional revenue. Yahoo can walk away from the deal but they have to pay a 250 million dollar termination fee. Microsoft is crying monopoly, and the NY Times is calling for the head of Jerry Yang. Poor Pluto. And if they won't let them do that, they want to be able to make the picture quality less than stellar. They say it will help combat piracy. Or, you know, make people really mad... ...Like Metallica did! They alienated many of their fans with their Napster shenanigans back in 2000 - and people are still angry. After new details emerge about the Yahoo/Microsoft deal-that-never-was, it looks like Yahoo sabotaged the bid on purpose. At least, that's what Carl Icahn thinks. So now, instead of just ousting the Yahoo board, he's looking to replace Jerry Yang as CEO too. Pity the people of poor Beaumont, TX. They're the guinea pigs in Time Warner's experiment with tiered pricing for internet usage. It's supposed to be a way to prevent peer to peer traffic from gumming up the works, and it's certainly not a popular solution. Most of the electronic items that get returned in the U.S. have nothing wrong with them. People either don't know how to work them correctly, or suffer from buyers remorse.
