Open reply to Josh at Tilzy.tv about NaVloPoMo
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) November 07, 2007
A reply to an email I got from Josh Cohen at Tilzy.tv asking about NaVloPoMo. I just riffed on his questions. Whatever I've missed, or whatever you think about it and about personal videoblogging, reply in the comments or on a video or however you like. - How'd you come up with the idea? And how'd you initially share it with the community? Did it take long to catch on? - About how many vlogs would you say there are involved? (I think there's a list on the Ning site, but was wondering if that was extensive) - Why do you participate? What type of people should participate? Is it for anyone? - What's the best part about it? - How do your videos for NaVloPoMo differ than your regular fare?

Lumiere Rules: Friday evening in a heavy rainstorm, moments after putting the baby to bed
from Twittervlog @ twitter.com/ruperthowe June 22, 2007
A crucial inconsequential moment. The only one I've posted all week. It's been a H.A.R.D. week. Lumiere Rules is a game I've been wanting to play for a few weeks, inspired by Andreas. I put down my Nokia for the first time in months and picked up my old Kodak DX7440 (which, totally coincidentally and appropriately) Andreas recommended to me before I even started Fatgirlinohio, when I was looking for a camera and was admiring the colours on his photos and videos on his blog. I love that camera. I needed it for this because it has a flat bottom, unlike my Nokia. From Andreas's blog, Solitude.dk: "The rules are as follows:60 seconds max.Fixed cameraNo audioNo zoomNo editNo effectsThey mimic the conditions under which the Lumiere brothers made their movies in the late 1800s."Aske Dam, a good friend, told me about these rules last summer when we were attached to the same research project. They mimic the conditions under which the Lumiere brothers made their movies in the late 1800s. All transfer seamlessly to web-video and videoblogs except the last one. On the web we are used to compress our videos because the raw files from our cameras are too big to be practical. But is the compression not an added effect? You can certainly tweak the compression settings to provide results that differ tremendously from the raw camera files. If you make any videos that abide by the Lumiere Rules tag them lumierevideo."More info and Andreas's videos at: http://www.solitude.dk/archives/20070522-2202/Also see great lumieres by Gogen and Bshoot Formats available: MPEG4 Video (.mp4)

Waking up
from Twittervlog @ twitter.com/ruperthowe June 14, 2007
Today, I realised that everything i've been looking for is right here in front of me. It's happening right now. It might not be your dream, but it's mine, and I've only put the pieces together after meeting everyone at Pixelodeon and seeing all the curated sessions of films. This is why i've fallen in love with internet video distribution. Funny how it's taken me so long to realise the obvious. I guess i was too busy looking ahead for the one big idea, and not realising that it wasn't a 'show'. As we say in Jedi school: It's not the End, it's the Means Whereby. And as the Dwarf said in Twin Peaks: Let's rock. Formats available: MPEG4 Video (.mp4)

Q&A after SpinXpress Presentation (30 mins)
from Twittervlog @ twitter.com/ruperthowe June 10, 2007
Again - not for the casual viewer :) And completely unedited. Shot as it was, on my phone from the front row. Lots of questions answered - not sure how much you'll be able to hear the questioners - particularly Mike Meiser's three or four questions from the back of the room - but I hope this a useful reference for anyone interested in finding out more about SpinXpress. See the previous video for a great introduction.Answering questions are Dave Toole, CEO; Markus Sandy and Michael Verdi Formats available: MPEG4 Video (.mp4)

SpinXpress Presentation by Michael Verdi (10 mins)
from Twittervlog @ twitter.com/ruperthowe June 10, 2007
Caveat: Not the usual personal nonsense. This is a technical presentation, and I'm posting it because it'll be useful and interesting to a select few. It's unedited, shot on the phone from the front row. It's a great, easy-to-follow introduction to the amazing new collaborative video production tool SpinXpress at http://spinxpress.com/and also their brilliant Get Media tool for finding media online that you can reuse. Formats available: MPEG4 Video (.mp4)

Hi all - Jackson West posted this on Friday:

I liked the comment "It's kind of like pilot season, where it’s all about trying new things and finding new shows."

All - i've had a few comments about Mefeedia's numbers on the number of videos for videobloggingweek2007. Before we publish numbers, we do our best to remove duplicates from those numbers - i.e. cross-posts, different formats, etc.
We'll be publishing some final analysis tomorrow afternoon. Lots of great videos this year! |

That's very cool Sull. This is an area of personal interest since last year...tracking all the video.
It's quite the task...and there's no way to tell what's being missed...that's the tragedy. |

i tried out magnify.net again for the purpose of testing its video search features. i orginally beta tested magnify.net last year when they first launched. found it interesting, but i havent followed them closely.
http://videobloggingweek2007.magnify.net/search/
their integrated search which includes youtube, blip, google, metacafe and other... only yielded about 50 entries. It is set to run once a day and auto-publish videos that match keyword videobloggingweek2007.
obviously, RSS based searching is far superior to web searching, as mefeedia has collected hundreds of videos so far. |

Hey Sull, great feedback!! Thanks a ton, we'll see what we can do.
Jay: User's don't have to do anythingbut list their feed with Mefeedia, and tag thier clips... rel=tag works, categories in itunes, keywords at blip. |

some feedback...
pagination seems to be a bit wonky.
not all the videos are showing up in the mefeedia tag feed. it should be modified to include all posts, not just a current page or other limits. is their a url param i could add to include all videos?
an option to watch videos without leaving this area would be useful.
oddly enough, i dont see a link to http://mefeedia.com/tags/videobloggingweek2007/ on this page.
i'd like to see more links to originating feed source. most seem to link to internal mefeedia feeds unless i look over to the 'who's participating' block on this page. i'm not seeing it anywhere on mefeedia entry permalinks, which is amazing. am i just missing it?
the mefeedia tag feed is very primitive and doesnt contain rich metadata. this is very limiting. ie. when trying to follow a post to its proper original source url (to leave a comment etc).
it would be nice to have source groupings so i can easily see all videos tagged videobloggingweek2007 from devlon or jaydedman etc. am i missing how i could do this somehwhere else on mefeedia?
i noticed the top "What is it?" header on this page breaks apart when the page width expands beyond the size of
the grey background's image size.
hope that helps.
great job slurping all the posts up!

jay, your feed needs to be in mefeedia database.
then it will be scanned ever half hour or so for posts tagged videobloggingweek2007. |

how are tags showing up here?
does mefeedia pick up technorati tags?
not sure what a user must do to be included. |
