Moreover, they become industries that feed on each other, as politicians buy millions of dollars worth of commercials, and of course, TV and cable outlets make big bucks by selling ads.

Hello and welcome to a UPI White House weekly. This week, President Bush changed his mind and said he would back a bill to help troubled homeowners and mortgage lenders. The House approved the $300 billion measure this week that Bush previously said he would veto. The Senate is still debating the bill, but it's expected to pass as early as today. The White House said the bill is needed to boost stability in the housing and financial markets. President Bush told U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams this week that he's fired up to go the 2008 games. Bush welcomed about two-dozen Beijing-bound athletes in a Rose Garden ceremony and said he can't wait to share the joy of their triumphs. Bush is already outfitted to go…he received a softball jersey from team pitcher Jennie Finch. During the ceremony, the President also acknowledged Scott Winkler, an injured Iraq war veteran who made the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team. The official send off for all of the athletes included a tour of the Oval Office and a formal dinner. It was a Columbian celebration this week at the White House. Musicians performed for President Bush in the East Room to mark the 198th anniversary of Colombia's Independence. Bush used the occasion to urge Congress to approve the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. He also acknowledged the good relationship between that country and the U.S. In his speech, the President also praised Colombia for their recent efforts to free hostages that rebels have been holding for years.

When Obama speaks (especially in his post-primary incarnation) one hears a profound nationalism. He has spoken in the past of an American history that many of us know has never actually existed. It has forced him to denounce a man he once knew, admired and respected (here I speak, of course, of the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright) for making whites uncomfortable by speaking ugly truths about American history, at home and abroad. Is this but the necessary shifts occasioned by the nasty game of politics? Or is it the road occasioned by one being an outsider, making that transition to the consummate insider? Time will tell.

Filed under: Music another focused on the killing of Lennon. Documentaries galore displayed the artist's life and/or career, comprehensively or specifically. And, of course, Lennon and his band mates have starred in their own movies. But how about a dramatic telling of little Lennon, the kid who would grow up to be one of the most famous men of the 20th century? Last week, a film titled Nowhere Boy, based on the book "Imagine This: Growing Up With My Brother John Lennon," penned by one of Lennon's half-sisters, Julia Baird, received funding from the UK Film Council, and is therefore on its way to your Beatlemania collection in only a matter of time. The most exciting thing about Nowhere Boy, the thing that makes it more than just another movie about Lennon, is that it's being scripted by Matt Greenhalgh, writer of the phenomenal Ian Curtis biopic Control, who was attracted to the book's psychological insight into Lennon's character. Baird's telling is not without controversy, mostly due to its portrayal of Mary "Mimi" Smith, the aunt who raised Lennon from the age of 4 (and who Baird did not live with). Because it's about the childhood of a person idolized by millions, there are sure to be other criticisms and controversy once the movie is released.
