http://freelinereport.com/ Google is about to get even bigger. According industry blog Tech Crunch, Google is finalizing a deal to buy social media powerhouse Digg. If the deal does indeed go through, Google plans to fold the site into its "Google News" subsite. Microsoft, which is currently in the midst a three year advertising deal with Digg, attempted to purchase the site last year. A Microsoft takeover is still possible if the Google deal falls through, says the article. http://freelinereport.com/freeline-7-24-08 While Microsoft continues to strike out in the mergers and acquisitions department, microblogging kingpin Twitter seems to have there game under control, announcing the purchase of the search engine Summize. The newly named "Twitter Search" does everything that Summize used to do, only under a different name. And what better way to celebrate your birthday than to announce an affiliation. That's right. The Jing project is now a part of SnagIt developer TechSmith. Judging by the documentation available on the Jing website, TechSmith will be marketing the three platforms in "tiers" - a "good, better, best" approach. In this video, I demonstrate the latest version of twhirl (0.8.4) which supports the Twitter clone, identi.ca. What makes this version so special is that it supports receiving updates via Jabber (XMPP). This means real time updates in your twhirl window! A sad thing is that this feature had been developed weeks ago, but Twitter's failure to deliver a stable XMPP service has prevented it from going live. Thanks to identi.ca's new Twitter compatible API, this feature can now be realized and enjoyed. While identi.ca's community is no where near the size of Twitter's, I'm excited about it's huge growth in such a short period of time, and how quickly new features are added. Enjoy!
