New School Of Seven Bells - "Half Asleep" (Stereogum Premiere)
from Stereogum August 07, 2008
This isn't the first time we're mentioning School Of Seven Bells -- comprising ex-Secret Machines guitarist Ben Curtis and twins Alejandra and Claudia Deheza of On!Air!Library -- although it is the first post devoted solely to the Brooklyn trio. It's about time. Last September prolific sound sculptor Prefuse 73 offered up "The Class of 73 Bells," a collab with SVIIB (their abbreviation, but I like it), reimagining their "Iamundernodisguise" as a spinning, flute-y pastoral dance track. So our proper introduction to the School comes with this one, "Half Asleep," their first single from a new 7: and album. File under dream pop, sure -- it's lovely and silky and etc. -- but it's not without the right tension: the ladies ply gauzy, gazing vocals over synth tones for clear waters, but it's around two minutes that Curtis comes with an ominous undertow of sludging guitars. They're far away, but palpable, warping the pretty in just the right ways.

New Crystal Stilts - "Prismatic Room"
from Stereogum July 30, 2008
When I featured Crystal Stilts in an installment of The Outsiders, I posted "Crippled Croon," a standout from their recent self-titled Woodsist EP. As mentioned then, it's an older recording from way back in '05, but the Brooklyn band has a full-length of new material Alight Of Night forthcoming, fittingly, on Slumberland. They recently posted a track from it up at their MySpace. Head there to hear the shimmery dream-pop of "Prismatic Room" and get an idea of why we can't stop listening to CS. Also, that isn't an updated photo -- Frankie, ex-Vivian Girls, is their current drummer (speaking of bands we can't stop listening to...). If you want to see what the current Stilts look like, you'll have to check them out in person. The dates:UPDATE: Unfortunately, "Prismatic Room" is no longer streaming, but we do have an MP3 for "Crippled Croon" following the tour dates...

What Made Milwaukee Famous Cover Billy Joel
from Stereogum April 25, 2008
Chuck Klosterman claims that Glasses Houses is the best Billy Joel album, and that Billy Joel has never been cool. He's wrong on the first count (it's the second best), but we can't dispute the coolness issue (much as we love him/are from Long Island). Maybe Austin indie fencing team WMMF can fix that (no, they can't). But still fun to hear their take on BJ's 1980 top ten hit. They've been playing it in their live shows, and this version was recorded for DeepRockDrive. It's a bit crunchier than Billy's, but pretty faithful, with some inspired riffing from Jason Davis. What Made Milwaukee Famous - "You May Be Right" (MP3)Billy Joel's best album, The Stranger, turned 30 last year and his label is celebrating belatedly with a deluxe reissue: remastered album, a "Live At Carnegie Hall 1977" disc, and a DVD of Billy on BBC's "Old Grey Whistle Test" from '78. It's out in July, when the piano man will play Shea Stadium's final concert ever.WMMF are touring the country with The Whigs. Dates after the jump.

Born Ruffians Unveil Album Art, Tour With Cadence Weapon
from stereogum January 03, 2008
Born Ruffians's first full-length, Red, Yellow And Blue is still a couple months away from hitting the shelves, but we thought you might want to see what the colorful album art looks like. You remember "Hummingbird"'s sugar rush, right? If not, it sounded and felt like this:Born Ruffians - "Hummingbird" (MP3)Even now we get a case of pop vertigo, as is ably conjured by the song's ring-around-the-room video. But there's more to Born Ruffians than one hook. The new album's admittedly back-stacked, but when they nail it, they nail it well (from "Badonadonkey" on, it's all aces). Beyond that, the Toronto trio are heading out on a lengthy tour, joined at all US dates by ex-blogger, current-spitter Cadence Weapon. Album art, tour stops, and a new song by Cadence Weapon after the jump. Consider it your BR/CW one-stop survival kit.
