[Notes:various damage - WISH] National Guard officials estimate the twister damage to Camp Atterbury, near Edinburgh, Indiana, is near 10 million dollars. SOT: Barry Richmond, Army Colonel: "we were blessed by God and not a single soldier or Marine who was here on the base was hurt during this awful storm." Military vehicles, equipment and more than 40 buildings were destroyed. [Notes:various - WCPO]In Ohio...thunderstorms left thousands without power and flooded roads. SOT: Roger Keaton, Trailer Owner: "My first instinct was just to open up the front door to look and make sure, and I couldn't get the front door open because I guess the wind was blowing so hard. And I even got scareder." [Notes:various - WJLA] And as the weather front moved east, a severe storm slammed through the nation's capitol in the middle of the afternoon. The passenger in this Toyota 4-runner was killed, the driver managed to escape when a tree fell on it during the fast-moving storm. This is the second tornado from the supercell that spawned the deadly EF-5 Parkersburg, Iowa, tornado. We intercepted the storm as near Fairbank, where the new wall cloud was organizing as the first tornado occluded to the north. We tracked with the new circulation from a distance of maybe a half-mile to its south as it lowered, turned right, and produced an immense wedge that struck the southern edge of Hazleton a glancing blow. This one was definitely trying to make a tornado. With a bit more rotation, it probably would have succeeded. Let me know what you think.

(May 26)[Notes:various of people crying in shelter - APTN Stringer] Friends and neighbors are trying to absorb the shock of what happened over the weekend in a couple of towns in the Midwest when tornados hit - destroying neighborhoods and claiming at least 8 lives. [Notes:various of storm damage - KMSP]In Hugo, Minnesota -- storms sirens went off - and many dashed for cover in basements. But on the way to her basement, Rachel Baldwin stopped to get her puppy ... [Notes:APTN Stringer] SOT: Rachel Baldwin, Wall Fell on Her: "I was down at the very end of the stairs and a wall and a water heater collapsed on top of me. So I tore away at the sheet rock and climbed out of the bottom of the house. And then I told people that my boyfriend and step-dad were still trapped down there.Rachel's arm was scratched up, and she got a bump on the head, but is otherwise OK. Her step-dad and boyfriend also made it out of the rubble safely. [Notes:various of damage - KMSP]But her home, and many others are gone. The Red Cross moved in to set up shelters. [Notes:stringer material] SOT: Courtney Johnson, Red Cross: "I think that right now the people are just kind of in that bewilderment phase from this disaster. Friday night, 17 tornadoes touched down across the state of Kansas, killing three people. The town I live in, Ellis, didn't receive the worst damage, but we still got hit. I documented everything from the moment the first sirens sounded, to my lunch break the day after. This video is part 1 of 2, the second video consists of the town basically assessing the damage.
