Scher / E.Schlechter) (z filmu „Jadzia"), Odeon 1936 ---------------------------------- Janusz POPŁAWSKI -- operetta tenor; one of the most popular Polish prewar singers, he was also a very prolific refrainist for Polish „Odeon". --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alfred (Fred) SCHER -- born 1900 in Złoczów/by Lwów, died 1968 in New York; one of the most talented composers in inter-war Poland, all of his songs were immediately recorded by „Syrena Electro", „Odeon" or „Columbia" to immediately become „the schlagers" (the immortal tango „Jak gdyby nigdy nic", or the valse-boston „Szkoda" and „Ty i ja" - for one of the last Polish pre-war movies „Amerykańska awantura") . He also wrote hit soundtracks for the music-comedies („Każdemu wolno kochać", „Książątko"). In 1937 he went to Paris, where he got a job at „Lido" as a pianist. In 1939 he took part in the defense of France, then he was wounded and interned in the nazi-camp near Koenigsberg. Released - due to his family's effforts - he was sent back to France and to the South, whre he recovered in Auch -- writing numeous patriotic songs. He for a while, ended up as a pianist in Marseille, then in 1947 he got a prestigeous position as director of the French Broadcast, but in spite of which, he in 1954 emigrated to USA. One of reasons of this decision was the accusation of his sypmpathies for the French Communist Party. In USA, having unsuccessfully tried to establish his connections with the emigree Jewis composers' and film makers' circles in Hollywood -- he ended up in New York, wounded by the street manic, who hit him with a knife. He died in oblivion in NYC, in 1968. ----------------------------------- Emanuel SCHLECHTER -- (born 1906 in Lwow, died 1943 in Lwow), poet and author of texts of dozens of interwar Polish hits. He studied the law in Lwow, to become one of the most prolific authors of song texts („schlagworts"). He always very strongly emphasised his Jewish identity. He also sung, and recorded a couple of the songs as peformer, with a piano accompaniament. Just before onset of WWII he wrote a few anti-nazi songs for the premiere show of Warsaw cabaret „Ali-Aaba", in September 1939. Ofcourse, due to the onset of WWII, the premiere never came true, and the author ot the anti-Adolf songs was immediately searched for. Captured in Lwow, he ended ip in Janowska Ghetto. For a while he tried to arrange the „Ghetto artgistic life". Finally - he, his wife and his few years old son -- went to become victims of the the Lwow ghetto annihilation, in 1943. -------------------------------------- Jadwiga SMOSARSKA -- the brightest star among prewar Polish film actresses. „Jadzia" is her role in one of the most charming Polish prewar movie comedies. HEY………….here are two of ten releases just out on line about a little surprise …..happy to report: Gorgeous George Stares At Goats Clooney becomes a psychic soldier Source: Variety Gorgeous George Stares At Goats We suspect that usually George Clooney's stare only makes him a ladykiller, but today, he's signing on for a different task: killing goats with only the power of his mind. Yes, he'll be starring in The Men Who Stare At Goats, to be directed by his producing partner and Good Night, And Good Luck co-writer Grant Heslov. The story's based around the US Army's semi-mythical First Earth Battalion, which apparently investigated psychic powers and non-lethal weapons during the late 1970s and 1980s, after Lt. Col. Jim Channon went on a fact-finding mission through the hippy communes of California and came back advocating ginseng regulators, divining tools, omni-directional thought and colourful uniforms so that "individuals will shine through the conformity. Groovy dude. They also had a goat lab at Fort Bragg, where for 25 years soldiers tried to kill goats by staring at them. Allegedly, it worked once, but we suspect that had more to do with the goats by that point probably being quite old. The film's based on the book all about the events by journalist Jon Ronson, with a script by How To Lose Friends and Alienate People's Peter Straughan. While Heslov's directed before, this is his highest profile film to date, what with bestest bud the Cloonster starring. And also staring. So fingers crossed for something truly groovy, man. Fact or fiction, or most likely some of both, it's an absolute blast to read. (And Ronson's BBC documentary based on the book, Crazy Rulers of the World, is a lot of fun too! You can find it here on Google Video.) Yesterday, it was announced that Grant Heslov will direct a feature film based on The Men Who Stare At Goats. The star? George Clooney. From Variety: Script was penned by Brit Peter Straughan ("How to Lose Friends and Alienate People"). The project has been around for some time, but international buyers only just received the script this week as the Cannes fest and market got started. Script topped the 2007 Brit List of best unproduced screenplays.
