It was a moment without historical precedent, American workers striking against a war that their government is waging. On Mayday this year, the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) shut down every port on the west coast of the United Stated--all 26 of them--in opposition to the US war against the people of Iraq. A few weeks back we reported on the struggle of Iraqi labor unions in the Basra area, who are fighting against the privatization of Iraqi ports and oil fields. As US missiles rained down on their houses, and the puppet government tried to arrest union leaders, they called for international solidarity and support from organized labor. The ILWU answered that cry bigtime. Now, on "Indymedia Presents" ----we bring you a report of the Mayday strike that completely shut down every port on the west coast for at least 8 hours. Longshoremen stayed off the job and in major port cities they marched, proud, in their union jackets, banners unfurled. In response, dock workers in Iraq shut down the port there for two hours. It was like a blinking signal light on a distant shore at night, acknowledging that the message of solidarity had been received. The Seattle Times reported that "dozens" of dock workers protested in Seattle. In our report you can clearly see the demonstration is 5 lanes wide, stretching back past the focus of the camera. There were "dozens" just in the first row or two. PepperSpray was there to document this heroic moment. It was a bit of a cinematographer's dilemma: how do you show something like a stop work situation, where the story is "something's NOT happening." We arrived at the hall early and union members showed us where to get beautiful shots of the idle port. Later we captured the march, the music, the mood. Iraq, Baghdad/Abu Dsheer - This memorial day, as citizens of the United States, and perhaps elsewhere, are remembering the fallen soldiers of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as previous conflicts, Alive in Baghdad asks you to remember the civilian fallen as well. It's been estimated that 1.3 million women have been widowed in Iraq due to war, ranging from the Iran-Iraq war to the most recent conflict which is still going on today. Although its difficult to be certain if this number is accurate, or to know just how many have been widowed in the most recent conflict, Iraq's acting Minister of Womens' Affairs, Narmeen Othman, suggests that at least 70,000 women have been widowed due to the most recent war. However, these numbers are disputed widely, and while a government committee on women's affairs has claimed there are just 1.3 million widows in Iraq, others have reported drastically different numbers. One source in the Ministry of Women's Affairs told an NBC staffer in 2007 that there were 3 million widows in Iraq due to the various wars of the last two decades. Despite this already shocking number, the United Nations news service, IRIN, reported in 2006 that there are 8 million widows nation-wide, with upwards of 330,000 in Baghdad alone. To put that in perspective, if true, it would mean that as much as 6-7 percent of Baghdad's population may be made up of widows, suggesting that the number of children with only one parent left is likely to be double, or triple this, if not more. The primary cause for women to be widowed today is sectarian violence and terrorism. Areas such as Abu Dsheer, Hawr Rajab, and other tumultuous districts that have seen some of the worst internecine fighting understandably have some of the most prevalent populations of widows and orphans. Abu Dsheer has been considered one of the bloodiest conflict areas in Baghdad, due to the influence militias have held there. Abu Dsheer is located in the south of Baghdad near Al-Saha neighborhood. Since 2004, Abu Dsheer was controlled by Al-Qa'eda on one side and the Sadr Movement on the other side, Many people was assassinated due to their sect whether they were Sunni or Shi'a. The Iraqi government tried many times along with Coalition forces to restore security in Abu Dsheer with no success. In 2006 there were many bombings taking place in Abu Dsheer, in addition to the battles between the Iraqi or Coalition forces and the militias. The civilian casualties were very high in Abu Dsheer, and the families living there faced grave financial difficulties due to the bad security conditions which prevent them from going to work or looking for jobs within Abu Dsheer. There are NGOs trying to help the people living there, by providing them with medical and financial aid according to their abilities. NGOs such as Al-Tathamon Social Organization (Social Solidarity Organization) are trying to fix some of the problems in areas like Abu Dsheer. The Organization was created on the 10th of July 2007 in order to help families or individuals whom having medical or financial problems. They also help the families whom lost there provider, like the father of that family or the mother. The Social Solidarity Organization has offices located in several areas such as Kadhimiya, Sadr City, Al-Husseiniya and Al-Nahrawan, as well as Abu Dsheer. Due to the difficulty these organization have finding funding, many such as the Social Solidarity Organization and Al-Yateem Charity, which help the women interviewed by Alive in Baghdad, receive support from the Sadr Movement. The Kullawada is a Bolivian dance that originates in the lake Titicaca region among the the highlands of the country. This is a traditional dance for alpaca and sheep wool weavers. The dancers wear colorful, elaborately decorated costumes for the dance symbolizing social class to which weavers and textile workers belong. This is why dancers use a little spinning wheel meaning their belonging to weaving workers.The Bolivian group LLAJTAYMANTA interprets this rhythm danced by the cultural troupe KORY WAYNAS. Tinku is a form of ritual conflict practiced by Indigenous Peoples in the Andean region. In a local kinship system people are divided to two halves or moieties, which have unequal status. These two halves represent the cosmogony of Andean cultures about the makeup of the Universe: the union (or encounter) between two opposite but complementary forces. On Friday May 2, 2008, the Bolivian community in Ottawa and friends from different nationalities got together to express their solidarity with Bolivian majorities and denounce the illegal Referendum that took place on May 4, 2008, in Santa Cruz.After gathering in the lobby of the Bolivian Embassy, the group had an informal meeting in which the current situation was discussed by the National Coordinator of the BOLIVIA ACTION SOLIDARITY NETWORK (www.bolivia.grupoapoyo.org). Then the Bolivian troubadour Gustavo Saavedra sang several songs to express the collective support of the Latin American community in Ottawa in favour of the process of change in Bolivia. It has been a little while since Keith Olbermann has had a Special Comment. Keith Olbermann has 4 major points. George Bush gave an interview yesterday to Politico.com and the users of Yahoo. The Election of a Democratic President could emboldened the enemy - this of course is nonsense. It is fear-mongering. It is so 2004. The country has moved past this. I was told they had Weapons of Mass Destruction said Bush. This is the It wasn t my fault. defense that Bush has used in the past. Keith is not letting him get away with that weak answer. Because the buck stops at the President s desk. He was the one that appointed those knuckleheads. He was the one that didn t ask for objective opinions. Finally, there was that great quote, I don t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf. I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal. President Bush has said some painfully uninformed things over the last 7 years. This may be the worst. He gave up Golf not for lent but for the Iraq War? Keith really lets Bush have it on this one and he should because the idea is more than condescending.  Oh, but, is this just another spin job?  The Associated Press has photos of President Bush playing golf after the death of the UN envoy. Keith s Special Comment might of been a little over the top but he was correct.  George Bush isn t sprinting to the finish line like he said.  He is limbing.  If he were a boat he would be listing to one side.  I guess the one thing that is clear is George W. Bush is the worst president in the last 50 years.  He maybe the worst president, ever.
