Passage to Ill - Nathaniel Stern
from DVblog.org May 20, 2006
Passage to Ill (1999, 5.5MB, 2:34 min) Passage to Ill was one of the first pieces I wrote as hektor , playing the cynical romantic and trying to get in bed with Ill (a punny nickname for a real person). After seeing me perform it at the Nuyorican poet s café, fellow grad student Alisa Schwartz asked if I d be keen to make a DV version (for one of our classes at ITP, 1999), and we storyboarded it out. It was thus the very first piece in a series that would later become hektor.net - Nathaniel Stern.

The Chapman brothers, interviewed.
from DVblog May 19, 2006
At Home with the Colonel - pilot (2006, 54 MB, 14:53 min.) Pilot for a proposed series of interviews by Mark Sanders with contemporary artists, directed by Mark Logue, who seems to have a serious track record. The press release says the interviews wil be playful conversational . Can t be bad - on the basis of this, hope v. much it gets commissioned. Still undecided about the Chapmans, whether tossers or wunderkinder, but this definitely attempts to shed some light thereon. Good.

Broken Bones - House of Freaks
from DVblog May 17, 2006
Broken Bones (2006, 18.8MB, 3:11Min) from Mica After the murder of Bryan Harvey, half of the band House of Freaks, I had wanted to make a music video for one of their songs as a small tribute, but I was just too heartbroken to approach it. I found the occasion on my last train ride home to Virginia. I filmed this on the way down and edited it on my way back to New York. While this talented duo had two legitimate pop hits in the 1980s and an international fan base, their influence is far greater than their current notoriety would suggest. I think it s because they were just a bit ahead of their time. The music is still great and deserves further attention. A recent compilation of Harvey s music has been released to benefit a memorial fund.(link to purchase).

Will Oldham & Harmony Korine
from DVblog May 15, 2006
No More Workhorse Blues (2006, 6.4MB, 2:55 min.) Will Oldham a.k.a Bonnie Prince Billy is a writer/performer of unusual talent significance. Extremely smart, genuine skill with language (in many registers) a wide range of cultural reference, a sense of being part of a larger tradition, but also a rootedness - the mining of a very specific personal seam. Then, still, within this - a capacity to surprise, even shock. An integrity. Here he teams up with Harmony Korine who matches the complex richness of the song with a roquefort of a video:- a sweet rottenness -simultaeneously intensely delicious to the same degree inducing a certain queasiness.

This film is about The Great Revolution of the British Cuckoos, who bravely took over London, forcing all the people to move inside the cuckoo clocks. Очен хорошо!

Dog Toothed Jewels
from DVblog May 12, 2006
Dog Toothed Jewels (2004, 44.1MB, 7:20 min.) Strange art fairy tale from artist Jerelyn Hanrahan which will be seen at the VIII Digital Colloquium in Havana this coming June. I like the narrative drive of this piece which, coupled with the intensely personal, almost arcane, iconography, gives it a quite unsettling character.

Lossy Video
from DVblog May 07, 2006
Hollywood News (2006, 2.7MB, 1:06 min. ) Saddam on Trial (2006, 1.9MB, 52 sec) Two pieces from the Montreal based video collective Lossy Video. The idea being to take news footage ..er..look at it closely. The results are undeniably capable, attractive interesting. Reminds me, conceptually, of Mark Tribe s revelation projects first with the Amnesty website then with that of CNN. Must be the zeitgeist - interesting concept, if a tad disturbing: remove the political context to make something..er.. beautiful. Wonder what Benjamin would have thought?

A Series of Practical Performances in the Wilderness (1)
from DVblog May 01, 2006
waiting on bob (2005, 5.7MB, 1:56 min.) move this rock (2005, 12.5MB, 3:56 min.) stick like snakes (2005, 5.5MB, 1:54 min.) Chapters 1,2,3 from the DVD A Series of Practical Performances In The Wilderness by Cary Peppermint and Christine Nadir. This is very smart work indeed - it references, or better evokes, ideas precedents techniques from all over world culture high low I m sure this is conscious. The thing is, a bit like the effect of C5 s short history of virtual hiking, featured here last year, the rather knowing formalism of it all the dry keep-your-distance wit ironically somehow create a space for a deeply traditional romanticism about nature the landscape to sneak back in. Not a criticism. Me, I love it.

Guthrie Lonergan
from DVblog April 19, 2006
#3 (2006, 0.3MB, 4 sec) #5 (2006, 0.3MB, 7 sec) #6 (2006, 1.9MB, 4 sec) Says Tom Moody: Recommended: Guthrie Lonergan s 9 Short Music Videos. Reminiscent of BEIGE s cheesy blue (green?) screen vids, each is built around some corporate sound (ringtone, Microsoft boot-up noise, DVD intro) that craps up our daily lives. Also good: Bricks (2006, 5.9MB, 1:12 min)
