8-9-08 This... is my turtle. My Dad found it for me outside. We live in the mountains of WNC. He almost ran it over with the lawnmower before spotting it. o.o So he put it in a container for me and showed it to me later. I've tried taking care of turtles before, but they were bigger. This one was small and young. It's about as big as the palm of a adult male's hand. I didn't know what to do so I looked up care sheets again and pictures. At first it looked like a box turtle, but this one really likes the water and likes to bury. My brother said it looked like a slider. Personally I deciphered it to be T. carolina carolina. So at first I just kept it in the long container with some water and left it cocked on the bank so the water would be on one end and dry at the other. I threaded some leaves to make it sorta shaded and so it could have a minor hiding place, I also sat a fern beside it to keep it company and keep it away from those dastardly cats. At first I just found a cricket and put into the container with it. It must have been hungry since there was no cricket left later. I tried some old turtle pellets that we had from who knows when.... I didn't know if it ate any of them or not. Barely get them wet and they turn to total mush. So I took care of it the next day or so. By the 3rd day I was wanting to release it. It wasn't eating the crickets, and I didn't try the pellets/sticks anymore. Surely a wild animal wouldn't eat processed food. After cleaning it's container out and setting it back into it after it's little "walk" (I have a garden hose with a "mist" option and it seemed to enjoy that), I put some more pellets in, right in front of it.... It took to them like a duck to water. It stuck it's head out, looked around, and started eating. So I knew it'd eat those, and heartily. So I kept it for a while longer. I decided to take my Mom's advice and got the flattest rock I could find and put it on one end of the long container. I put some food on top of it. The next morning the food was gone, and later sometimes I'd notice it on top of the rock. (I kept it outside at all times due to temperential differences) Later I'd swap the leaves for moss. I put the moss on the water end; it would bury in under the moss with the water. Nice way to cool off I guess. I wanted to try feeding it worms, but it's so dry around here, I never could find any.. So I kept feeding it those sticks and trying grasshoppers and stuff now and then, which it usually ate over the food. But I have a bit of a problem. I don't really have a way of overwintering it. I have to let it go. I don't want to... I'm really attached to it, actually. It's so cool. I love how it sticks out it's head and looks around, and watches me. It's just so awesome, cute, and cool. It's still very lively. VERY lively. So I must have been taking good care of it. I decided to take pictures, and then take video of it to remember it by. I got it to take food from me only once before, and I couldn't believe it. So I wanted to record it happening, and got it to happen twice. It seemed really hungry actually. In the video about halfway into it, I'm holding a piece of food but nothing happens. The reason is is that I'm actually not holding it low enough. I didn't notice this cuz I was watching through the LCD on the camera. And then I slightly tough it on the head and make it withdraw. :( Me sorry turtle.... I never really gave it a name. I'm still really attached to it though. I had this song (the one in the video) in mind, because I plan to release it tomorrow during the morning hours. I assume most of the predators will be sleeping by then and it should have a safe trip. Thankfully it moves away from the road, and actually in the direction where there's a natural pond over the hill. I hope it makes it's home there and grows into a healthy turtle, but I know anything can happen.. I'll miss him/her, but I have these videos and the photographs I've taken of it to remember it by. I've had it for about 2 weeks now I guess. Good luck, turtle!!
