Hawaii Democratic Caucus
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos February 20, 2008
Hawaii Democratic Caucus from hawaii on Vimeo. The Hawaii Democratic Caucus was held the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008. Prior to this year's hotly contested race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (who was born in Hawaii), the record turnout for the primary caucus was 4,800 people in 1988. Last night, over 36,000 people turned out to participate. Long lines everywhere, chaos and confusion in several locations, and handmade ballots had to suffice for many when the printed ones ran out. In the end, Obama received 76 percent of the Hawaii Democratic vote, versus Clinton's 24 percent. Cast: hawaii

Miller Street Memorial
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos January 23, 2008
Miller Street Memorial from hawaii on Vimeo. On Jan. 17, 2008, 23-month-old Cyrus Belt was killed when a neighbor threw him from a bridge onto the H-1 freeway. The city of Honolulu was united in grief over the horrific murder of the young boy, whose all-too-brief and troubled life has since become the focus of intense scrutiny and debate. While some people scramble to assign blame, hundreds of others have quietly convened every day at the spot where Cyrus Belt was killed. While some people are picking apart the people in his life, hundreds of strangers are simply moved by his tragic death, building a remarkable makeshift memorial of flowers, balloons, toys, letters, and other offerings. The sprawling shrine to the toddler at the Miller Street pedestrian bridge has grown so large, local transportation officials are struggling to balance Honolulu's need to mourn with the safety of nearby residents and passing motorists. These video clips were recorded on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Cast: hawaii

Hilo Takeoff
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos January 22, 2008
Hilo Takeoff from hawaii on Vimeo. A short addition to my kids' collection of airplane videos. Departing Hilo International Airport (ITO) aboard go! Airlines flight 1039 on Wed., Jan. 2, 2008. It's an unusually clear day for the often gray and wet east side of the Big Island. Despite a dirty window and the glare of the sun, the view of the Hamakua Coast and Mauna Kea is impressive. Imiloa Astronomy Center
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos January 20, 2008
Imiloa Astronomy Center from hawaii on Vimeo. A visit to the fantastic Imiloa Astronomy Center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo on the Big Island. The center emphasizes both astronomy and Hawaiian culture, and notably uses the Hawaiian language throughout. Cast: hawaii

Unconferenz
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos January 14, 2008
Unconferenz from hawaii on Vimeo. Unconferenz: A grassroots tech/Internet gathering to foster sharing and interaction amongst its participants. No keynotes, no talking heads, no sponsor pitches... just peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, spontaneous collaboration, and free flowing conversation. Sparked by Burt Lum and organized by everyone, Unconferenz was held on Jan. 12, 2008 at JAIMS in Hawaii Kai. Note: The smaller Vimeo flash player hiccups a bit with 24fps video content. For best results, click through to the full player and disable scaling. Cast: hawaii

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos January 09, 2008

Ahui O Manu
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos January 08, 2008
Ahui O Manu from hawaii on Vimeo. A tour of "Ahui O Manu," the vacation rental in Volcano Village we stayed at during our New Year's 2008 trip to the Big Island. Charming, rustic, surrounded by wild ginger, towering Ohia trees, and giant Hapu’u ferns, and located on the edge of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Cast: hawaii

Hawaii Flickr Meetup
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos January 07, 2008
Hawaii Flickr Meetup from hawaii on Vimeo. Hawaii Flickr users and fans kicked off 2008 with a potluck gathering at Kakaako Waterfront Park, site of the first official Hawaii Flickr Meetup in 2006. The motley crew of shutterbugs traded technical tips and showed off their gear, taking pictures all the while. From new users to seasoned pros, everyone enjoyed a beautiful afternoon full of food and friendly talkstory. Cast: hawaii

Anuenue Playground
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos January 02, 2008
Anuenue Playground from hawaii on Vimeo. The cool, green town of Waimea (a.k.a. Kamuela) is home to what could be Hawaii's best playground. Anuenue Playground, an incredible wooden wonderland, was built and is maintained by the entire community. It's a must-visit stop as we pass through on our way from Hilo to Kapa'au. Given the subject matter, there's a lot of shaky handheld camera work here (including an ill-advised trip down a slide), which doesn't necessarily mix with the HD widescreen format. You have been warned. Cast: hawaii

Hilo Falls
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos January 01, 2008
Hilo Falls from hawaii on Vimeo. Visiting Boiling Pots, Rainbow Falls, and Kolekole Beach Park, three scenic parks in and near Hilo Town on the Big Island of Hawaii. Cast: hawaii

Kohala Jodo Mission
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos December 31, 2007
Kohala Jodo Mission from hawaii on Vimeo. One of the key stops on our regular pilgrimages to the Big Island is a drive out to Kapa'au, ancestral home of my mother's side of the family, to visit the graves of my maternal grandparents at the Kohala Jodo Mission. Near the very northern tip of Hawaii, tucked away on a hill behind the original King Kamehameha statue, this small temple is the epitome of peace and serenity. Cast: hawaii

Takeoff
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos December 31, 2007
Takeoff from hawaii on Vimeo. Departing Honolulu International Airport (HNL) aboard go! Airlines flight 1034, bound for Hilo (ITO). This short clip was recorded by request from Zac, who loves watching my last go! Airlines video just for the takeoff sequence. Even though low clouds and a dirty window made things a little hazy, I think it looks pretty good in 720p HD. Cast: hawaii

North Shore 2007
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos December 29, 2007
North Shore 2007 from hawaii on Vimeo. I follow up my "North Shore for the Holidays" video (Dec. 26, 2006) with another visit a year later, this time using my Sanyo Xacti HD700 camera. It's a gray, chilly day and the beach is mostly empty, but hardcore surfers are still out on the waves. I'm still getting used to the camera and the editing software (Final Cut Express 4), but I'm liking it. Cast: hawaii

Mililani Town Center
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos December 28, 2007
Mililani Town Center from hawaii on Vimeo. Wandering the Mililani Town Center after the sun goes down. My first adventure with my Sanyo Xacti HD700 and Final Cut Express 4. I'm not even sure after importing, editing, exporting and compressing that I've got anything even remotely like HD video, but I'm having fun figuring it out. Cast: hawaii

Pali Lookout
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos May 21, 2006
I hit the road to check out the Nuuanu Pali lookout point, perched high in the Ko`olau mountain range overlooking the windward side of O`ahu. Posted for Videoblogging Week 2006. There wasn't too much danger, but there was a fair amount of wind, and a few warning signs. Music is "Steps" from Fall Submissions by AntiGuru (Magnatune). Cast: hawaii

Magic Island
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos May 11, 2006
Posted for Videoblogging Week 2006. Inspired by yesterday's vlog by Roxanne of Beach Walks with Rox, I head down to Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park. Magic Island is a popular park for locals and visitors alike, with wide open spaces, lots of shade, placid waters, and a great view of Waikiki and Diamond Head. This week, though, the park has been taken over for the Honolulu Centennial Celebration, rescheduled to this weekend after recent heavy rains and flooding postponed just about everything in Hawaii. As crews set up for the festivities, a few people enjoy the park, and several Japanese couples take their Hawaii wedding photos. Enjoy, but don't go in the water. Extra special thanks to Wilfred N and the Grown Men for providing the music for today's video. The song, "I Never Get Tired of You," can be found on their album, Waiting for Luck To Come, available online. Cast: hawaii

Aloha Friday
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos April 26, 2006
Posted for Videoblogging Week 2006. To end the work week, I talk a bit about the history and popularity of "aloha wear," and survey some of the fashion of downtown Honolulu. Thanks to vlogger Roxanne of Beach Walks with Rox for suggesting today's topic. Music is "Lagoon (Baba)" from Gravity by Artemis (Magnatune). Other sizes and formats available at Lightfantastic.org. HawaiiThreads Picnic
from Vimeo / hawaii's uploaded videos April 17, 2006
Posted for Videoblogging Week 2006. I run a discussion forum dedicated to Hawaii called HawaiiThreads.com, where talkstory about anything and everything is always the special of the day. Today, the site celebrated its second birthday, and some of the regulars (and irregulars) gathered at Kakaako Waterfront Park for a picnic. Food, folks, and fun as they say. Music is "Waiting for Luck to Come" from Waiting For Luck to Come, courtesy Wilfred N and the Grown Men. Other sizes and formats available at Lightfantastic.org. Cast: hawaii

Haleiwa
from blip.tv (beta) December 23, 2005
Videoblog entry re-encoded for iPod compatibility. A trip with the family to historic Haleiwa town on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii. It's a beautiful place somewhat clogged with tourist traffic. The key draw for many is shave ice, with Matsumoto's being the quintessential destination. My wife and I prefer Aoki's, just a few yards down the street, where the ice is finer and the lines are shorter. Music is "FastCars" from Plethora by MRDC (Magnatune/CC:BY-NC-SA).
