After the Vancouver Canucks lost game seven and the Stanley Cup to the New York Rangers, June 14th 1994, angry "fans" fought, broke windows and looted downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, fueled for the most part by alcohol. Police estimated sixty thousand people were on the streets of Vancouver that night. Over five hundred police were in the downtown core that night as well, that's including the riot squad. Tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets were used to clear the streets. With every playoff game, larger crowds gathered at Robson an Thurlow streets. With the larger crowds a different type "fan" began to show up. The kind bent on causing trouble. To say there was no sign a riot was going to happen that evening would not be accurate. The trouble makers were not invisible, and there was a different "feel" to the crowd that day. The street party was a little bit "meaner", people were a little more "in your face". But the idea a riot could happen here in Vancouver was unthinkable. I expected some trouble, not widescale looting and fighting. I believe the police patroling Robson street were also surprized, because of the way they were surrounded at Robson and Thurlow. Once the riot began, most people tried to get out of the downtown core but a great number found they couldn't. Complaints about being trapped downtown were common. I don't know if city buses or the light rapid transit system known as skytrain were operating as normal, or if they had been shut down by the police that night when the trouble started. I don't know if police had isolated the downtown core, containing looters, at the same time trapping innocent partiers. 14 year old Londoner Laura wins Junior Wimbledon becoming the first British Girl to win the title since 1984, knocking out the top seeded American in the first round, and a host of seeds along the way. She was also the youngest competitor in the draw. She's an exciting, attacking left handed player hitting winners from the back of the court with a good serve, and a hugely exciting prospect for us British Tennis fans to cheer. It was great following her progress at this year's Wimbledon, with a fairy tale ending for a change! :-) This video, courtesy of the BBC, includes her winning moment, receiving the trophy from former champion Ann Jones on No.1 Court in front of a boisterous partisan crowd, and her amusing interview afterwards, which was very tongue in cheek! :-) All the best to Laura for a successful career in the future, and also to her gracious Thai opponent, who played a great match, and was a super sport in playing a Brit at the home of Tennis.
