HOW C-LEVEL EXECUTIVES BUILD THEIR REPUTATIONS -- FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE: Podcast interview with Dr. Leslie Gaines-Ross, chief reputation strategist Weber ShandwickHOW C-LEVEL EXECUTIVES BUILD THEIR REPUTATIONS -- FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE: Podcast interview with Dr. Leslie Gaines-Ross, chief reputation strategist Weber Shandwick
from EnterpriseLeadership.org
May 27, 2008

In 2007, a major company issued a statement saying that it had dismissed its CIO for violating an important corporate policy. The nature of the corporate policy wasn't revealed. Just about every IT publication carried news of the event. For weeks IT bloggers posted comments about what the CIO could have done to be let go. Eventually, the noise level around this executive's dismissal died down, and the executive took a new job in an area outside of IT. In this podcast, enterpriseleadership.org asked one of the world's most sought-after authorities on executive reputation, to talk about how C-level executives, especially CEOs, build their reputations based on their corporate strategies, what they need to do to maintain them, and what challenges they face in developing and executing their corporate strategies. In her role as chief reputation strategist, Dr. Leslie Gaines-Ross leads Weber Shandwick’s global reputation consulting services and proprietary thought-leadership development. She has done groundbreaking, award-winning research into CEO and corporate reputation, executive team reputation, leadership transitions, and reputation sustainability and recovery. She spearheaded the first comprehensive research on CEO reputation and its impact on corporate reputation and performance. She developed Weber Shandwick’s first global corporate reputation study – “Safeguarding Reputation,” which identifies strategies for sustaining and recovering corporate reputation. Dr. Gaines-Ross also created Fortune’s “On the Minds of CEOs” research. Her book, CEO Capital: A Guide to Building CEO Reputation and Company Success, was published in 2003 by John Wiley & Sons and her book on reputation recovery is scheduled to be published in 2008, also by John Wiley & Sons. Dr. Gaines-Ross created www.reputationRx.com, the Web site devoted exclusively to reputation news and information, and her blog can be found at http://reputationxchange.com/.

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Geoff Smith created the most amazing ring tone for me! He emailed to thank me again for hooking up Cali Lewis and himself during the iYule launch party, and for the video I made regarding this project. He wanted to show me a project that he is doing for the iPhone. The project he is talking about can be found at RingToneFeeder. He recorded this just to thank me for the time I gave to the iYule project. RingtoneFeeder is a weekly automated delivery of original ringtones exclusively produced and optimized to sound great on the iPhone. When buying content on CD or DVD we have come to expect bonus material as part of the deal - such Special features often include deleted scenes, exclusive sound tracks, bloopers, wallpapers and many other goodies. When you subscribe you will instantly get the latest 5 ringtones released and then at least one new ringtone every week for as long as you remain subscribed. At only $1.98 per month or $19.98 for a full year, it s a great deal.. and will make you the envy of all your friends. I m not only bringing this up to thank Geoff. There is something that many people overlook when they have a presence online their reputation. The more bad things you do, the more people who will not want to interact with you. They won t want to talk to you, trust you or believe in you. With online communication, all you have is your reputation. This is why I am as happy-go-lucky as I can be. This is why I reciprocate as many friendships as I can. That s part of my reputation. What is my rep? To me, I m all about having fun, meeting people, and helping as many of you as I can. I do my best to maintain a healthy reputation. I m very transparent about myself, with good reason. I don t want to ever be perceived as having something to hide. When I was visiting my family last week in Iowa, my Mom clipped out an article from the Reader s Digest. My brother also mentioned the same article. My brother Adam is now doing some live streaming of his own! It s really cool. He ll listen to some music, and then sketch a picture to go along with it, all on the stream. He s a great artist, and a lot of fun. So be sure to check him out! Anyway, I digress. What I learned from the article is that there are younger people online who don t care about their reputation. They are rude, and break rules on nearly every site they join. There are many people who have been kicked off of the University of Iowa s football team, due to things they posted online that they shouldn t have. Too many people have the misconception that things done online cannot impact your real life . There are things I did online over ten years ago that I wish I wouldn t have, of course. I try to stay very cognizant of the fact that anything I do online can be tracked, and leads back to my reputation. What kind of reputation do you have online? More importantly what are you doing to keep that reputation intact? The Rapid Fat Loss Handbook. Info Market Results. Want to embed this video on your own site, blog, or forum? I Changed My Mind – How Can I Back Out of a Commitment?I Changed My Mind – How Can I Back Out of a Commitment?
from Bigg Success
April 17, 2008

Bigg Challenge We received an e-mail from Joe who recently agreed to serve on a committee of a local non-profit organization. He s discovered that it s a bigger commitment than he thought. So he wants to know what he should do to get out of it. Bigg Advice You obviously had good intentions, Joe. Sometimes our circumstances change health issues, new responsibilities, extra care for loved ones, or any number of things. Since there s no mention of that in your e-mail, we ll assume that it s not the case here. 5 options to reduce your responsibility to this commitment #1 Quit This is the most cut-and-dry way to do it. However, keep in mind that it may damage your reputation. That s why we don t think it s a very good option. #2 Fulfill your commitment We think your best option is to suck it up and honor your commitment. Then don t recommit at the end of your term. You ll deliver on your promise. Your reputation will remain intact. Learn from this experience so you don t repeat it. #3 Find someone to replace you We think this is your next best option. If you know someone who is interested in the organization, talk to them to see if you can recruit them to take your place. You ll leave with your reputation intact because you didn t leave the group hanging. #4 Find someone who can help you Can someone assist you? For example, perhaps they could make phone calls or send e-mails for you. Delegate some of the work so the commitment is more in line with what you thought. #5 Can you be reassigned? Talk to chair person of the committee. Maybe you can trade duties with someone else on the committee who is looking for more responsibility. If your circumstances have changed, the chair person will probably be happy to help. We ve been in this situation ourselves, Joe. The bottom line is that you should try to minimize the damage to yourself and the organization. 2 tips to keep this situation from repeating itself #1 Don t commit on the spot Many people are very flattered when they are recruited to serve. They often say yes on the spot, without really giving it much thought. To keep this from happening again commit to never committing on the spot! The U.S. government has laws to protect consumers you get 72 hours to reconsider a purchase. That s a good rule when someone asks you to give your time Give it a day or three! Thank them for considering you but tell them you ll need to think about it for a few days. #2 When you say yes to anything, you re saying no to something. A lot of people don t think about this. As you re considering giving your time for a new cause, think about what you ll have to give up because we all only have 24 hours in a day! What s your bigg challenge? E-mail us: bigginfo@biggsuccess.com Or, click on our Comment link below Our bigg quote today is by Tom Robbins, who said, Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach. Once you say, Yes, I ll do it the best thing to focus on is how to get it done. Next time, we ll talk about how to reclaim your weekend. Until then, here s to your bigg success! March 27, 2008

Daniel J. Solove, an associate professor of law at the George Washington University Law School visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "The Future of Reputation." What information about you is available on the Internet? What if it's wrong, humiliating, or true but regrettable? Will it ever go away? Teeming with chatrooms, online discussion groups, and blogs, the Internet offers previously unimagined opportunities for personal expression and communication. But there's a dark side to the story. A trail of information fragments about us is forever preserved on the Internet, instantly available in a Google search. A permanent chronicle of our private lives—often of dubious reliability and sometimes totally false—will follow us wherever we go, accessible to friends, strangers, dates, employers, neighbors, relatives, and anyone else who cares to look. This engrossing book, brimming with amazing examples of gossip, slander, and rumor on the Internet, explores the profound implications of the online collision between free speech and privacy. Daniel Solove, an authority on information privacy law, offers a fascinating account of how the Internet is transforming gossip, the way we shame others, and our ability to protect our own reputations. Focusing on blogs, Internet communities, cyber mobs, and other current trends, he shows that, ironically, the unconstrained flow of information on the Internet may impede opportunities for self-development and freedom. Longstanding notions of privacy need review, the author contends: unless we establish a balance among privacy, free speech, and anonymity, we may discover that the freedom of the Internet makes us less free. This event took place on February 11, 2008, and was jointly sponsored by Google's public policy team and Authors@Google. What Did He Say?What Did He Say?
from Just Average American
March 19, 2008

Walter Cronkite s signature sign-off, And that s the way it is,  helped cement his reputation as the most trusted man in America. Through 19 years of anchoring the venerated CBS Evening News, Americans came to believe that if Mr. Cronkite said it, it must be true. Other television news anchors of Cronkite s era  Chet Hundley, David Brinkley, and John Chancellor  also enjoyed the confidence of viewers. Print journalism was still in its heyday, and the New York Times boasted that it contained all the news fit to print, evoking similar consumer confidence. The 1960s and 70s were golden days in journalism. Innovative technology only improved the speed at which reliable, trustworthy reporters told us the way things were.      Now, we know better. Cronkite s trademark salutation should have been, And that s the way I say it is, about the stories I ve chosen to report. The New York Times slogan should have read, All the news we think is fit to print, with our special predispositions added for good measure. Bernard Goldberg s bombshell, the best-selling media indictment Bias, confirmed what many Americans had suspected for decades; a decidedly left-leaning culture permeates newsrooms throughout the world of broadcast and print journalism. Nowadays, news consumers of all stripes must carefully sift through not only op-ed pieces, but front page articles as well. Too many contemporary reporters see their primary responsibility not in terms of disseminating facts who? what? when? where? and why? but in changing the world.      All this made reading about yesterday s speech by Barack Obama great fun. Moreover, I had a special interest in discovering the professional s take on A More Perfect Union because I had made my own assessment of the speech independent of any secondary input. All I did yesterday was read Obama s words and pen my reaction, concluding the Senator s effort left much to be desired. How would my evaluation stack up against those of the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, et al?      The LA Times headline was not encouraging. The banner Obama urges moving past old racial wounds, made me wonder whether staff writers Peter Wallsten and Peter Nicholas listened to the same speech. I guess they missed the part about the blood of slaves and slave owners flowing through the veins of his wife and daughters, and I know they didn t hear the five paragraphs Obama took to detail white sins of the past. Here s a sample: Segregated schools legalized discrimination blacks were prevented, often through violence, from owning property, or loans were not granted black families could not amass wealth lack of economic opportunity erosion of black families lack of basic services parks for kids to play in building code enforcement Reverend Wright came of age [at] a time when segregation was still the law of the land And on and on, a curious way to move past old racial wounds.      The Times Opinion section was typically myopic, seeing virtually nothing objectionable in the speech. The lead editorial was subtitled Obama s speech challenged America to discuss race. To go forward, we must. Nary a disparaging word followed, and the piece concluded by thanking the Senator for this remarkable address. Tim Rutten, whose writings range just to the left of Trotsky s, did not disappoint. Comparing yesterday s speech to Abraham Lincoln s House Divided, and Franklin Roosevelt s The Only Thing We Have To Fear Is Fear Itself, and John Kennedy s address on Catholicism and politics, Rutten gushed that Obama s oration exceeded Kennedy s because Obama like Lincoln wrote his address himself. Not satisfied with his own obeisance, Rutten quoted CNN s Bill Schneider, a virtual paragon of political neutrality. To get the full humorous impact, here s the entire paragraph:      That was the most sophisticated speech on race and politics I ve ever heard, said CNN s Bill Schneider, the only network pundit who actually has taught American political history at elite universities.             I m not making this up. Can t you feel the love? Average Americans will from now on bow and express appropriate adoration at each manifestation of Bill s image.      I was beginning to think I d missed the mark yesterday. Fortunately, my local paper printed the musings of two observers who noticed the same deficiencies I had. Kathleen Parker, writing for the Washington Post Writers Group, had this to say: what [Obama] didn t acknowledge is that [Reverend Jeremiah] Wright is completely off-the-wall [Wright s] accomplishments don t quite neutralize the anti-white message of the man Obama selected as his spiritual mentor. You tell em, Kathleen. Obama suggested that if Wright is occasionally angry, he has a right to be, as does the community he serves. And if white Americans are startled to witness that anger, they haven t been paying attention In other words, [Obama] artfully shifted focus from his still-perplexing relationship with Wright to our own dark hearts, a machination completely overwhelming the Times gullible writers.      The second astute cognoscenti, Thomas Sowell so described because he agrees with me has also taught at elite institutions of higher learning. Mr. Sowell had this to say:      No one had to be in church the day Wright made his inflammatory and obscene remarks to know about them. The cable news journalists who are playing the tapes of those sermons were not there. The tapes were on sale in the church. Obama knew that because he had bought one or more of them.      All that aside, he spent 20 years in that church and once donated $20,000 to it.      There is no way that he didn t know about Wright s anti-American and racist diatribes from the pulpit.            So there you have it. One group of writers hears a great speech capable of moving the country closer to racial harmony. Another cabal interprets the same message as a slick re-packaging of affirmative action blather. Thanks to the Internet, we have access to the deliberations of hundreds of commentators, as should be the case in a free society. Please do not take this blessing for granted, but use it to form your own opinion.      And that s the way it is.             Share This
