from Saturday Extra June 20, 2008
Nick Sherry SUMMARY: What ideas are driving Senator Nick Sherry to re-think the way we `do´ finance in Australia? Mark Leonard - What does China Think? SUMMARY: According to Mark Leonard intellectual life in China is booming. China has numerous think tanks full of complex, lively argument and they are watching other cultures closely. Each major think tank had devised its own CNP index, measuring the `comprehensive national power´ of different countries and ranking China against them on the basis of economic, military and political power. Giles Milton - Smyrna SUMMARY: The Turkish city of Izmir on the Mediterranean seaboard was once called Smyrna, one of the wealthiest cities in the Ottoman Empire. In September 1922 the victorious Turkish calvary rode into the city after three years of occupation by Greek forces. Two weeks later, Smyrna became, according to Giles Milton, 'hell on earth'. Films with Jason Di Rosso SUMMARY: Jason reviews Mongol - the story of the early life of Genghis Khan who was a slave before going on to conquer half the world in 1206. And Daniele Luchetti´s My Brother is an Only Child - an Italian coming of age film about two brothers from opposite sides of the political spectrum.

theorycast.42 :: Public Sphere // Online Anarchy = Offline Anarchy
from Videoblogging - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 15, 2008
While having brunch at Washington Market in downtown Buffalo, Shady, Ken Fujiuchi and Kevin Lim chat about the ease of online anarchy mirroring into the offline world. I offered the pretext of Samuel Huntington's "Clash of the Civilizations" as a way to understand why some cultures seem to challenged by practices of online democracy, which might include examples like Anonymous (group) and Japan's 4chan. While we'd like to hope a Darwinian approach would naturally have societies "sort themselves out", some civilizations are concerned that they might not survive that phase and have taken steps to manage it, such as through legitimate forms of Internet regulation (e.g. China).

Online Brokers - Securities Market Regulation
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) May 05, 2008
This is about Investor Confidence. If you the investor feel confident the securities markets are fair you re gonna spend money. Businesses will get to use that money. There will be growth. But if the public loses confidence in the system and suspects insiders are manipulating things no one s gonna want to invest. Buh-bye cash flow! Adios economic growth! Here in the U.S., economists think the public IS confident and it shows in the cornucopia of capital in the market. An always-evolving regulatory system keeps players in check .regulators at the federal and state level, inside the industry itself. Because frankly, it s not the damage one cheater can do in a dishonest deal it s the damage to the confidence of investors that can really devastate a market.
