From : Deconstructing Dinner
www.cjly.net/deconstructingdinner/072408.htm The Livestock Lost series examines the farming and business of meat, dairy and egg production. It will explore the known and unknown dangers of meat production and what people can do to source alternatives to what many would refer to as a cultural staple of the North American diet. Part II - Local Meat? Not in My Backyard? On Part II, we continue where Part I left off and begin taking a much more on-the-ground look at how one community has begun responding to these regulation changes and to the increasing demand for safer and more responsibly produced local food. As many areas throughout BC scramble to meet the new slaughterhouse regulations, an important and critical lesson is being learned of what happens when communities begin to take a more serious approach to localize their food system. Situated in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia is the narrow Slocan Valley; home to many small-scale farmers raising livestock. The region is one of many in the Province that is now without a licensed slaughterhouse. Any sale of local meat in the area is now deemed as criminal according to regulations put in place in October 2007. As a response, a co-operative abattoir (slaughterhouse) group was formed to ensure that meat can continue to legally be processed in the region. Three proposed locations later, the group continues to run up against opposition from meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Guests/Voices Kenyon McGee, Spokesperson, Slocan Valley Abattoir Co-operative (Winlaw, BC) - Kenyon is a lawyer with Kenyon McGee Law Corporation and has been involved with the abattoir co-operative since it was first formed in 2007. He has lived in the area for 30 years and has had experience raising and butchering livestock. Corky Evans, MLA Nelson-Creston / NDP Opposition Critic for Agriculture and Lands, New Democratic Party of British Columbia (Winlaw, BC) - Corky Evans was elected as the MLA for Nelson Creston in 1991, and was re-elected in 1996. He was once again elected to represent his constituents on May 17, 2005. Corky has ten years experience as an MLA, during which time he served in many cabinet portfolios, including Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. He now serves as Opposition Critic for Agriculture and Lands. Abra Brynne, MIES Help Desk, British Columbia Food Processors Association (BCFPA) (Nelson, BC) - Abra has been hired part-time to work with the BCFPA's Meat Industry Enhancement Strategy (MIES). Her role is to work with producers in the southern part of the Province and assist them in the transition to the new inspection regulations put in place in October 2007. ]]>

Today s episode with Karen Pomroy of Equine Voices Sanctuary is critically important to increasing our awareness around horse slaughter. Many people do not even realize that horses are sent to slaughter. As sad (and for me completely unacceptable) as this information is, we need to be educated. Show Highlights: Horses sold for slaughter, shipped to foreign countries for horse meat 3 slaughter plants in U.S. now shut down Inhumane treatment, completely UNconscious The important, crucial difference between slaughter and euthanasia. Karen initiated a euthanasia fund Biggest reason for the number of horses going to slaughter in the U.S. is OVER-breeding People need to take full responsibility for the life span of their horses Make plans for the retirement years for your horse as well as how your horse will pass from this life Education and Solution Based Action are key Equine Voices can help give you viable options, PLEASE contact them to be sure you know your choices Please go to www.equinevoices.org to get involved, learn more, adopt a saved Premarin Mare! From : Your Story : How We Play the Game of Life
On a this beautiful summer night I went to see the Obama Show when it came to Berlin. Initially I was reluctant thinking that it would be the usual political hoopla but on second thoughts I thought that this is one of those cities in the world that history is made in and wouldn t it be a shame if something was to happen and I was to miss it. Would he make a mark in the history books like Kennedy or Reagan or would there be a tragic event like Bobby Kennedy while he was running for election in 68? In the end neither event happened but instead it was simply a good night out in the summer air drinking beer for the people of Berlin and I don t think many people really cared about the Obama Show at all. What they did care about was being out and about as the people of Europe seem to do. Especially when they can appreciate how wonderful things are when the weather is good. And that is my point. I don t think many people would have turned up if it was a wet and cold day in January. As for the cheering crowd. Well no one back about 500m where I was were cheering so I think the usual rent a crowd were up the front getting all the attention. On the way home I looked around the old East Berlin that I was walking through and decided to give my thoughts on how wonderful and contradictary Berlin is with the starkly beautiful Eastern architectural style and the still developing commerce. As I say in the audio, Berlin it s like a run down share house of vibrant 20 year olds determined to make it work in any way they can. It s a young city in an old skin. Stunning. ]]>

Twing of Sails had thrown this party in his house in her honour, but he wasn t as free with kilojoules as he was with genetic material, and Senator Wu wasn t prepared to funnel the heat donations of her two crèche mates to bring another man s child to the World. She acidified the pores in her tentacle and waved it around, letting the current carry away the dead spores. She smiled at Twing and a wave of blue burst from his centre and radiated towards the thin membranes that rippled on the edge of his disc-shaped body. He didn t look bad, but he wasn t as comely as Senator Wu. Her body was an almost perfect sphere, and she was well aware of it. From : American Conservative University Podcast
Show 242 How would God vote. Michael Medved talks to author David Klinghoffer. 37 minutes 8.5MB From How Would God Vote? The Bible commands a style of politics that in the American context could only be described as deeply conservative. Is, then, the politics of God theocratic? âA strong case could be made for theocracy, American-style, if the word were defined not in the conventional way but according to its root meaning. Democracy signifies the rule of the demos, the people. Strictly speaking, theocracy means the rule not of churches or priests but of theos, God. It won't do to deny that many conservatives, even while unambiguously affirming the traditional American separation of church and state, would add more theos to the democratic mix than is currently the case. I choose not to call myself a theocrat because I know how eager liberal secularists would be to twist the word against me. Dishonestly they would make it appear that I wish to impose a literal biblical theocracy, that I would dumbly imitate word for word the political structure of king, priesthood, and religious high court that existed in biblical antiquity. âYet, in a subtler sense, are we not all theocrats now?â This startlingly original investigation into the controversies dividing America provides a clear and convincing affirmation of the relevance of the Bible to contemporary politics. With liberals and conservatives alike claiming the authority of the Bible as support for their views on social and moral issues, the need to understand what the Bible actually says has never been more pressing. In How Would God Vote?, journalist and scholar David Klinghoffer illuminates the worldview set forth in the Scriptures and argues that, with some exceptions, the God of the Bible would overwhelmingly support traditionally conservative principles and policies. Klinghoffer considers the ethical and moral heart of contemporary political debatesâquestions like immigration, gay marriage, abortion, care for the poor, war and peace, censorship, privacy, the place of religion in schools and the community, and much more. There is a pattern here. It s for a very good reason that conservatives line up as they do, predictably, on a range of issue; as do liberals. The two competing political philosophies derive from radically different ways of looking at the world: one in consonance with the Bible, the other very much not. Klinghoffer, however, is no stereotypical Republican. Controversially, he argues that the Bible would have us emphasize domestic policy, the classic pre-9/11 culture war issues, over a hyped-up âWorld War IVâ against âIslamofascism.â The Bible has a foreign policy, he shows, and it is not neoconservative. He demonstrates support in the Scriptures for a welcoming attitude toward immigrants, for gun control, and for affirmative action. The Bible, Klinghoffer shows, is no mere list of dos and donâts but a fully coherent and practically relevant portrait of moral reality, compelling and deep enough to guide not only our private but our public lives. Even if we as individuals fail its private tests, thatâs no reason to reject its public lessons. To anyone who takes God seriously, every election poses a radical question: Will we vote with Him, or against Him? The Bible is an unapologetically political book, Klinghoffer explains, and an extremely conservative one. Some political views offend God, and those views are mostly liberal. In short, the Bible commands you to be a conservative. Stimulating and provocative, How Would God Vote? is an important contribution to pre-election debates and to setting the path the nation will follow in the future under a new president. ]]>
