Apparently Philip Rosedale was in Paris and I wasn t That s bad luck. But good luck is that all of this is recorded and there s even a transcript! It was in the context of SLCamp which is according to their website an ad-hoc gathering, a unconference, born from the desire of people to share and learn about the latest innovations in terms of 3D virtual environment, mainly focusing on SecondLife, technology, communication and marketing in an open environment. Now this sounds great and is the thing I always wanted to have around. So I will keep watching it and might book a trip to Paris next time! But back to Philip. As you know he is right now in the middle of some transformation from being the CEO to being the chairman of the board. As well in transformation seems to be Linden Lab and the whole virtual worlds scene because everything is growing, Linden Lab has open sourced their client code and is in the process of creating an open protocol for a distributed grid. So the more interesting it is to hear Philips take on this. I will just post the videos here but you can read the transcripts here. I might also post a followup on some topics. I was on the Stanford campus yesterday at the AlwaysOn conference where I met Philip Rosedale, founder and CEO of Linden Lab, the creator of Second Life, the vast virtual world. Philip told me that Second Life provides functionalities to post video to virtual movie screens and television sets. He said there is some video up and he expects to see much more. We've found some examples of that in the Apple iTunes area. He said that the Linden has provided the tools to post videos for about 18 months. I hadn't heard about this, but I have spent very little time in the virtual world. Maybe Beet.TV should have a virtual video blog? Could be very cool. I asked Philip about the role of marketers paying big bucks to set up shop in Second Life. He told me that these corporate sponosorships are not key to the company's business proposition. WIRED's Frank Rose has a fairly tough story in the currrent issue about the viability of Second Life as a marketing platform. Regardless of the viability of the virtual world as a marketing platform, it's a media sector that is taking off. This is demonstrated by today's $350 million Disney acquisition of the Club Penguin. Hats off to Josh Jaffe of VC Ratings who predicted that Disney would buy the Club six weeks ago. See this video on Beet.TV: http://www.beet.tv/2007/08/oh-wow-online-v.html

EDGIE Award Presentation to Philip RosedaleEDGIE Award Presentation to Philip Rosedale
from Cullinane & Green Report
January 13, 2007

In this episode of the Cullinane & Green report we're making history by presenting the very first Cullinane & Green EDGIE award to Philip Rosedale, the Founder & CEO of Linden Lab. Linden Lab are the developers of Second Life, the online virtual world that is taking the REAL world by storm. At Cullinane & Green we believe that Second Life will be the "next big thing" in the world of online business. Philip has an extensive background in the development and pioneering of streaming technology, having built his first computer in 4th grade, and started his first computer software company while still in high school. In 1995 he developed FreeVue, a low-bitrate video conferencing system for Internet-connected PC's, resulting in the acquisition of his company in early 1996 by RealNetworks. For 3 1/2 years, Rosedale served at RealNetworks as Vice President and CTO, where he was responsible for the development and launch of RealVideo, RealSystem 5.0, and RealSystem G2. In 1999 Rosedale returned to San Francisco, joined Accel Partners as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence, and began the basic research that would become the technology behind Linden Lab. Rosedale holds a BS degree in Physics from the University of California at San Diego. We're delighted to bring our audience such interesting and timely guests -- further proof that at Cullinane & Green we're on the bleeding edge so you don't have to be!
