Napoletano purosangue, fin dagli esordi Paolo Sorrentino, regista e sceneggiatore di tutti i suoi film, si distingue dai colleghi italiani grazie a uno stile personale e contemporaneamente internazionale: rigoroso, quasi geometrico nella scelta delle inquadrature e dei movimenti di macchina, innovativo ed eccentrico a livello di scrittura. Fucina di storie e personaggi forti e originali, il suo spirito creativo, sofisticato anche sul piano visivo e musicale (passa in modo disinvolto da Ornella Vanoni all'elettronica dei Lali Puna), lo colloca oggi a pieno diritto nella schiera dei giovani "autori" europei, in compagnia purtroppo di pochi italiani apprezzati forse più in Francia che da noi (tra questi Crialese e Garrone). Giunto dietro alla macchina da presa dal mondo più riservato della scrittura (vincitore del Premio Solinas nel 1997 con Dragoncelli di fuoco, ha scritto insieme a Capuano la sceneggiatura di Polvere di Napoli e ha lavorato per la serie tv La squadra), Sorrentino ha esordito come regista, dopo alcuni cortometraggi, con il pluripremiato L'uomo in più (2001). Dopo i due omonimi loosers Antonio Pisapia, il dimesso ex-calciatore Andrea Renzi e l'ex cantante cocainomane Toni Servillo (vincitore della Grolla d'Oro), il regista è tornato ne Le conseguenze dell'amore (2004) a cucire sul corpo di Toni Servillo l'abito di un personaggio scomodo, antipatico e allo stesso tempo commovente per la vulnerabilità celata dietro una maschera d'indifferenza. L'insonne, metodicamente eroinomane Titta di Girolamo va ad arricchire infatti la galleria di "ex" tra i personaggi di Sorrentino: ex mafioso, criminale gentiluomo dotato di un'eleganza d'altri tempi, questo timido e sofisticato antieroe si trova a sconvolgere "in modo rocambolesco" la propria piatta, anonima esistenza. Presentato a Cannes, il film ha ottenuto numerosi riconoscimenti, tra cui 5 David di Donatello ("miglior film", "miglior regia", "migliore sceneggiatura", "migliore attore protagonista" e "miglior direttore della fotografia") e 3 Nastri d'Argento ("migliore attore protagonista", "migliore attore non protagonista" e "miglior direttore della fotografia"). Dopo aver fatto una brutta fine nei panni del marito di Aidra all'inizio de Il caimano morettiano, Sorrentino ha nuovamente riscosso il favore della critica al Festival di Cannes con L'amico di famiglia (2006), storia del vecchio usuraio dell'Agro Pontino Geremia de' Geremei (Giacomo Rizzo), un altro sgraziato antieroe dal nome eccentrico che si aggiunge alla galleria di creature disperate create dalla penna e dalla camera del regista napoletano.
