Video theme: the magic of "living" art. Gillette "Gil" Elvgren (1914-1980) was an American master painter. His "genre": pin-up art. His subject: beautiful women. His style: absolute virtuoso—vibrant clarity with lush lines and colors. His preferred artistic means: oil on canvas. His esthetic glory: the radiant, sensual, complimentary objectification of woman. Pictured in a variety of fun and clever contexts, his beautiful "Elvgren Girls" are stylized ideals in which the realities and essentials of female form and expression are heightened and exalted artistically. A pin-up à la Elvgren is life-affirmative art of the highest order. According to Elvgren art collector and author Louis K. Meisel: "Between the mid-1930s and 1972, Elvgren produced over 500 paintings of beautiful girls and women. Almost all of them are...fully developed, finished works of art....[A]s the decades progressed, [the paintings] just kept getting better and better. Elvgren continually surpassed himself, always improving in ideas, composition, color and technique." [from the definitive book GIL ELVGREN: ALL HIS GLAMOROUS AMERICAN PIN-UPS; 1999/TASCHEN; co-authored with Charles G. Martignette] Most of Elvgren's paintings were completed for two calendar companies: Louis F. Dow and, especially, Brown in fact, they are worthy of permanent-collection-and-display status at any of the world's most respected art museums. Although most of Elvgren's paintings portray women who are clad or semi-attired, there are a few exceptional nude paintings that are essential to the Elvgren oeuvre and absolute masterpieces; I have included them accordingly. In this slideshow, you can see how angels were portrayed in traditional art. It differs a lot from modern depictions, where people (it seems from the 2nd half of the 19th century onwards) give them female breasts (probably reflecting the more gynocentric zeitgeist), while angels in the Bible basically have a male identity.
