EdgeCast Provides CDN Services at "Half the Price of Akamai," CEO Tells Beet.TVEdgeCast Provides CDN Services at "Half the Price of Akamai," CEO Tells Beet.TV
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
April 29, 2008

EdgeCast is another of the scrappy upcoming content delivery networks (CDN) which is vying for a piece of the market for the distribution of big files around th Internet. The Los Angeles company has raised $10 million with most coming from Disney's venture fund.In just 9 months, the company has landed over 100 customers. Last week in Manhattan at the Contentinople conference, I caught up with James Segil, CEO of EdgeCast. His company is taking on giant Akamai -- who Jim refers to as legacy operation, much like United Airlines and he likens his company to Jet Blue. Like Jet Blue, EdgeCast has entered the market with low fares. He told me that EdgeCast charges some 50 percent less than Akamai for comparative service.Speaking with Jim, I learned that EdgeCast is the CDN Blip.tv and thus for for Beet.TV videos -- which stream very nicely, thank you."Velocix Takes Drug Dealer Approach"I love this headline from the NewTeeVee's post by Chris Albrecht on the news that U.K.-based Velocix is giving away free CDN services in the hope of getting pubilshers, eh addicted. Om Malik wrote yesterday about Voxel, another start-up that is aiming to take business from Amazon's S3 business.-- Andy Plesser

Chris Albrecht is a staff writer at NewTeeVee, the authoritative blog that covers the online video space. He stopped by the Beet.TV offers a couple weeks back to chat about trends in content and consumption. He talked about the glut in online comedy channels and the challenge for independents to keep things funny in order to create a sustainable business model.Chris brings a lot of relevant experience to his work as a journalist who he cut his teeth at ZDNet and as an exec at the MTV-acquired Atoms Film. He does a great job. Liz Gannes, NewTeeVee's editor, Om Malik and the NTV team have done a great job in building understanding about the fast changes that are happening in our industry. In their first year, they've built traffic, influence and have launched an impressive conference business. The NewTeeVee Live conference in San Francisco in November was among the best industry events I've attended. Liz just told me that the event has been re-scheduled for November 13. You should save the date, for sure.-- Andy Plesser

Carl Bidleman Doug and I have only met Om Malik twice but we ve come to like him very much. Om is a highly-respected journalist and founder of Giga Omni Media which publishes a number of websites that chronicle the worlds of technology and new media. We first interviewed Om for Life Outside the Box on December 21st, but before we could post the video, he suffered a heart attack. As you can imagine, Om s life both inside and outside the box has changed dramatically. He s now taking time to smell the flowers and we would all be wise to take the time to listen to what he s learned.

On Digital Media, Episode #56: New Tee VeeOn Digital Media, Episode #56: New Tee Vee
from On Digital Media
January 17, 2008

In this first episode of 2008, John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons and Steve Hatch discuss: John attended Jeff Pulver s Social Media Breakfast in New York last week, with Real-Time Social Tagging. Interesting Chia-Lin is planning to attend the Girl Geeks Dinner in San Francisco on January 31st and possibly Lunch 2.0 CES was all about the TV s this year Google and Panasonic have signed a deal that will enable content from Google s services - like YouTube videos and Picasa Photo Albums - to be displayed on Panasonic TV s. There was no mention of the use of Android software in the deal. The Seismic Shift in Online Video: viewers and advertisers are moving online. YouTube traffic is up 8% since the strike began Sony s Clicker (formerly Grouper) has seen a doubling of registered users Chrysler is shifting its advertising budgets to live sports and the Internets - and out of prime time programs. TV writers and producers are going there too: NewTeeVee reports that a group of striking writers who call themselves Virtual Artists are seeking $30 million to produce content for online and digital distribution. Chia-Lin s friend Dylan Otto Krider was nominated as an Amazon Short Story Finalist. Go vote for him here and help him land a book deal with Penguin Publishing. HD-DVD is Dead! And really, so is Blu-Ray thanks to Apple and others. Steve thinks that broadband and online distribution will make the format wars irrelevant. Is he right? Apple has secured downloadable rental rights from all the major movie studios - an uprecendented deal. Did they just sound the death knell for Netflix? Was Netflix s announcement of unlimited online movie viewing an attempt to pre-empt Apple s rental efforts? Engadget has a matrix that helps you determine what you can and cannot do in the Apple movie rental framework based on your hardware and software. Apple also announced the MacBook Air. Chia-Lin nearly drooled on herself while looking at it. John thinks it s an amazing machine but is mildly disappointed in it as he would have preferred a replacement for the 12 Powerbook. Time Warner Cable want to start charging fees based on individual usage for its cable modem customers. Who came up with that bright idea!? We think it will hinder the adoption of new media which may be what the cable company wants, anyway. Jaman.com will be distributing their content to TiVo subscribers. The Economist has released the 2008 Media Industry Forecast (PDF): for the first time ever, the web will outperform radio. That s Huuuuuuge. Steve asks: When will television start to see a decline in the total advertisers dollars flowing into the medium? SAVE SCRABULOUS! Free Widgets Make Commercial and Personal Web Sites Video-Rich!Free Widgets Make Commercial and Personal Web Sites Video-Rich!
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
January 10, 2008

An increasing number consumers and businesses are creating collections of videos and dynamic feeds of videos which are organized as "widgets" and displayed on web pages, blogs and social networking sites. For bloggers and web publishers, having relevant video dynamically is valuable. For publishers seeking to increase streams, making clips widget-friendly is essential. NewTeeVee, the authoritative blog about online video, has been making good use of the Vodpod video widget program since last year. Here's how editor Liz Gannes explains the process: "All the members of the NewTeeVee team have VodPod accounts, and we each contribute to the collection displayed at the top of our page. We like to think of it as an editorially chosen zeitgeist of online video, including viral videos, interesting interviews, and exceptional episodes of the online shows we watch. We're a text-driven site, but write about video so we want it to be front and center. There's no formula for what we put in there, but we try to add about one new item per day." I expect commercial sites will use the sort of widget created by Vodpod. Mark Hall, co-founder of Vodpod came by the Beet.TV studios in December. For some background on the company, check out this piece in VentureBeat.

Mogulus is the most interesting of all the streaming services like Justin.tv, Ustream.tv, and Stickcam. Why? Because they built their system around a TV station metaphor. You know, multiple cameras. Switchers. Producers. Graphic overlays. Here Max Haot, CEO, shows off Mogulus and talks with us about how he used the system to do the live streaming from Om Malik's NewTeeVee Conference. I watched at home and it was awesome -- almost looked too slick at times. Tags: Mogulus, Justin.tv, Ustream.tv, Stickcam, Max Haot, NewTeeVee

Rafe Needleman is editor of CNET's Webware, the increasingly popular influential and blog about how "Web 2.0" technology is utilized by consumers. (It's up to #26 on the Techmeme Leaderboard.) Rafe's been covering emerging technologies and start-ups for some time. During the last tech bubble, his daily newsletter for Red Herring, titled "Catch of the Day," was a must read in Silicon Valley and around the world.I chatted with Rafe a couple weeks back at the NewTeeVee conference in San Francisco, which he was covering.I asked him about his thoughts about this new boom in start-ups and innovation. He is pretty positive about things but says that there are too many online video ad networks whose business is predicated on sophisticated advertising advertising management/insertion, plus advertising sales. The field is now too crowded and most of these companies simply can't do it all. -- Andy PlesserFull Disclosure: My PR firm handled Red Herring from 1999-2001 and currently represents CNET Networks.

Dabble has built a video search platform around the preferences of viewers. Founder and CEO Mary Hodder calls it "people powered search." The company will soon provide metadata about search to publishers who need to understand why and where their clips are being watch. If Mary can solve that, it would be a huge business.
