Jon Rafman - Ad-Vice for a Prophet
from DVblog October 04, 2008
Ad-Vice for a Prophet (2005, 78.6MB, 6:59 min) Great piece by Jon Rafman. I love the refusal to commit to a tone, the playfulness humor, the wistfulness sometimes the vaguest air of menace too. There s a curious feel. An air of detachment, as if nothing can be said directly but that everything is mediated distanced by the act of editing and presenting, serving up, (as with the ads). The whole thing feels haunted by movie history. I m curious to know whether this is all found footage, whether some of it is original or what. Anyway, tremendous. Lots of other interesting work on his site.

Johannes Nyholm - Puppetboy
from DVblog September 26, 2008
Puppet Boy (clip) (2008, 5MB, 1:04 min.) For more than a decade, the artist and music video director Johannes Nyholm has been working on animated films about the little clay figure, Puppet Boy. In a claustrophobic chamber drama, the frustrated puppet is engaged in an endless battle against the agonies of everyday life. Nyholm’s most recent production, Puppet Boy, is a staged TV documentary. The arrogant cultural critic meets the pretentious artist, played by Nyholm, in his studio. For the final TV shoot, Nyholm dons his 40-kilo “puppet boy” outfit, impossible to take off without assistance. The atmosphere grows increasingly tense, and the TV team abruptly leaves the humiliated Nyholm, a captive of his own creation. Showing this month at the Moderna Museet - The Studio, a place for moving images and internet-based art.

Isidore Bethel - Fell in Love with a Dead Boy
from DVblog September 23, 2008
Fell in Love with a Dead Boy (2008, 66.7MB, 11:01 min) I was a little chary ,at first, of posting this, not because I don t think it s good (I do) but because Isidore Bethel had me a little worried that it might be someone s autobiography fuelling it I wasn t entirely sure I should post it before that person had thought about whether that was a good thing a lot. Silly me, because Isidore cheerfully assures me it s all fictional. He s good. Not to be OTT but there s something that smacks of Citizen Kane about this, in both a good and a bad sense. Good, in that there is such energy skill deployed here (not just artistic, the guy can clearly organise too). Furthermore, it packs a real punch, as witness my confusion. On the debit side there s sometimes a sense of everything including the kitchen sink being dug out and after the initial rush (happens with Kane for me too folks - little too much obvious desire to be epic) you begin to see the thing as held together to some degree by sheer willpower, even where the occasional hole is visible I look forward to see where Isidore Bethel will go next -we ll hear a good deal more of him, I m sure. Also: nice score from David Nyman (like its use in the piece too: non-obvious) a careful, intelligent performance of the script from Megan Popkin. (not sure I m making out the credits properly -did she share the writing credit? - the script: that s a piece of work too.)

A Grandfather's Love Story
from MoviesandTelevision - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) September 20, 2008
This piece is called "A Grandfathers Love Story." It's the telling of memories that go back to the 1950's in California as my grandfather was married. With the use of old family photos and light motion work, the story of his wedding day comes to life. These stories are worth telling and putting to film to keep as an heirloom for future generations to keep and pass on. Don't let your family stories get lost to time.

Xcontinental Music Video for The Herd
from sky noise tee vee September 01, 2008
Back at the turn of the century there was a lot of anti-globalisation in the air, as witnessed in this track by The Herd, from Sydney's Elefant Traks hiphop label. MC Ozi Batla waxes lyrical about the relationships between the first and third world, which we* tried to convey with a girl wandering through Brisbane and using a futuristic device to give her visual feedback about the various ethics of what she was seeing for sale in the city( eg nike shoes, genetic engineered foods, mcdonalds etc ). 7 years of hindsight suggests plenty worth changing within the clip, but at the time was proud enough of it, having blended video with graphic overlays and 3D elements, having edited in 1 minute sections (all that could fit on the hard drive at the time), and having combined skater girls and globalisation.(( *We? myself, Suckafish P on editing duties, Collapsicon and David Shaw on graphic overlay, 3D and title duties. ))

Flapwing and the Last Work of Ezekiel Crumb Experimental Drama
from Metacafe - Today's Videos by Metacafe August 18, 2008
A wonderful slab of dramatic expressionism told through this dark fantasy tale of a lone scientist trying to unwravel a hidden energy source of incredible power, when inspiration comes from an unlikely source that reveals unexpected results. Written and directed by Alasdair Beckett-King and produced by Gareth Fielding as a student film the blending of lighting, scenery, models, live action and animation makes the film an incredible visual feast on a very low budget.
