Featured film captures work in progress of a permanent wall mural titled "Our Global Connections". Contemporary conceptual artist Chitra Ramanathan was chosen to create this wall painting as Artist in Residence. The project involved creating a large-scale wall mural for the front lobby of Creek Elementary School, Marion County Indianapolis, Indiana U.S.A, to reperesent the international focus of the school. Chitra started by painting the base, while each student was allotted a portion to paint or stick collage material to represent icons from different parts of the world. All 505 students from Kindergarten to grade 5 was given a chance to know and work with the artist. After all students had contributed, Chitra worked to unify the painting in her unique textural abstract style that is typical of her extensive, known body of work, without altering the students' contribution. To quote the art teacher in charge of related administration, "Students had so much fun working on the mural!" The final piece measures 13.8 feet wide and 4 feet high and was created between March and April 2008. This site-specific public art commission made possible by a grant to the school by the Washington Township School Foundation, Indiana. It was completed April 5, 2008. The event was publicized in the local media. About Chitra Ramanathan Educator and professional artist Chitra Ramanathan's current series of mixed media paintings portray the mental emotion of happiness as a visual entity through intense colors and multiple layers of textures that attract light from various angles, pushing the boundaries of her paintings beyond the confines of their two-dimensional surfaces. She is inspired by short-lived garden blooms and constantly changing seasons in nature, characteristics that attribute to the ephemeral, fleeting and enticingly beautiful happiness' "formless form": a phrase she has coined to describe her concept. The hint of circles almost always present in her work signify the cycle of human life: trying times followed by happy phases in a positive sense, and of life and rebirth influenced by her roots from India. Her paintings have been described as "tactile works that resonate with a quiet harmony" and "Simply luxurious" by Manhattan Arts, New York. To quote from an excerpt from an interview with the artist, "Chitra's paintings exemplify her love of nature as well as the subjectivity of each individual's unique pursuit of happiness. Her painting procedure often entails making mental notes of a scene in nature, including the lighting, colors, and textures. She then uses these impressions in her studio to replicate the subject matter in an abstracted form, using rich physical textures, intense colors, and varied media". Born in Thiruvananthapuram, India; Chitra Ramanathan (last name pronounced Rama-Naathan) is a contemporary Indian American visual artist and educator. She produces predominantly large scale abstract conceptual mixed media paintings, drawings, prints, site-specific installation works, and sculpture that have been exhibited in art galleries in SoHo, Broadway Manhattan, New York, solo exhibition at the ARC Gallery and I like how she communicates so much with a subtle use of color or a tiny brush stroke.....There is so much in our world today that can be considered "negative", that I like art around me that offers hope and that reaches for joy. For me, her paintings do that"-Alice Irvan, President, AIRvan Consulting, LLC, Indianapolis U.S.A. Trivia2004 site-specific public art commission for MGM Mirage to create two paintings both measuring 4 feet X 6 feet in dimension and signed by the artist are on display inside the Bellagio Conservatory, Las Vegas. Two of her large-scale paintings are permanently displayed and owned by the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1995).Her first solo exhibition in the U.S was hosted by the ARC Gallery and Educational Foundation at Chicago in 1994. This major exhibition featured her paintings as well as sculptures and prints (monoprints and lithographs). The Chicago exhibition was followed by shows at different art galleries on Broadway, New York from 1995-1998.She coined the phrase "formless forms" to describe her visual depiction of happiness, an emotion of the mind, in her extensive body of colorful paintings with myriad textures. When she was just twelve years old, her watercolor painting was showcased in recognition of her talent at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkatta, India, in addition to being awarded a silver trophy through the Philips India Ltd. "Parichay" Child Art Competition during an award function at the venue. She was awarded a prize in the form of a camera at the age of ten through a national child art competition by Hindustan Unilever Ltd., India.Has created drawings and paintings throughout her childhood and adolescent years.Began drawing and painting from the age of four.Has received several silver trophies from art competitions throughout her growing years.Created portraits and landscapes throughout her childhood. Was born in Kerala but grew up in Kolkata (then Calcutta) as a child artist, and later Chennai, India.Calls her images of happiness "formless forms", while portraying that emotion of the mind as a visual entity. She received the Liquitex "Excellence in Art" Product Grants for two consecutive years (1994 and 1995) from Binney and Smith Inc., makers of Crayola crayons.Has spent a month painting and drawing entire days in Paris, France that inspired her current work. Speaks very little French."Chitra" is a Hindu name for the female child in India derived from the Sanskrit word for Portrait, Picture, or Painting. The Indianapolis Artsgarden was the venue of the most recent solo exhibition of her signature paintings. Is a fan of Mira Nair's movies. To date, most of her signature style paintings have got sold to collectors in the state of California.Has taught courses and workshops in Acrylic painting and Mixed media painting at the Indianapolis Art Center since 2004.The major influence for her current body of work stemmed from keenly observing the gardens from inside the Claude Monet House during visits to Giverny. Her favorite painting, The Waterlily Pond, 1897.Happiness is the common thread that runs through her expressive, highly textured abstract paintings awash with bold, vibrant colors. Her biography is listed in the national directory Who's Who in America 2008.Her 1998 and 2000 originals titled "A Momentary Glance", and "Coruscation" respectively, were the originals works upon which two large-scale paintings on canvas signed by the artist were created for MGM Mirage for the Bellagio, Las Vegas in 2004. "Coruscation", a mixed-media painting on canvas measuring 18 inches X 24 inches, is owned by an Indianapolis based collector who acquired it in 2006.Speaks four languages.Loves the outdoors, working on her garden and boating.Entered the University of Illinois in 1991 with a course in Cinematography. While earning her M.B.A, she was commissioned to officially create an original T-shirt logo depicting the Summer Olympics 1996 held at Atlanta. The T-shirts were created to welcome the "Illinois M.B.A"'s class of 1998.

August 25, 2008

I am Creative Director and co-founder of Crescent City Art Project, an organization created with the vision of enhancing communities aesthetically through artistic expression that embraces culture, individuality, and pride. My inspiration for starting CCAP began two years ago when I started creating public art in the New Orleans area. I went from gutting and de-molding homes ravaged by Hurricane Katrina to engage my artistic passions. I was asked to create the centerpiece of a mural project at the Central City EOC Head Start School. I designed a scene that was a welcomed improvement to the school's bare exterior, giving life to playful still images that have connected with the children that attend the school. To date, I have independently produced 601 images that have been installed at many Crescent City schools, churches, buildings, and streets. Since each installation project is volunteer-based, it involves a large-scale coordination effort. I am responsible for managing as many as 125 volunteers for a one-day project. Through my efforts, I have successfully completed many projects with up to 50 paintings created within one day. I use these projects to build relationships with national volunteers and the community from every walk of life. In addition to this personal venture, I have received distinguished honors and accolades for my work. My projects have been featured in the Times Picayune (article June 19, 08), WVUE - Fox 8 New Orleans, NBC's "The Guiding Light", Oprah rebuilding foundations, both structurally and aesthetically, in the Crescent City. After attending the School of Visual Arts, D's life took a different turn...away from art. These paintings become deeply personal because they fuel his new commitment to his craft. He spends time designing the images, based on the school's spirit and of course his state of mind. The more excited he is about a project the more brilliant the colors are. Each painting for D is a moment in time that he shares with the volunteers who worked with him on that day of service. His paintings are about a shared experience, giving and community. He couldn't imagine doing anything better. List of schools/organization/institutions/businesses with D's work.... Interview with Rahmaan Statik 47th St and lake Park, Hyde Park, Chicago Mural Project Doctors save lives, police fight crime, and the Artist dictates what we know as Image, Icon, and Form. I live a life-style of observation and creation. I believe that being well informed on the subject of your work and having an organized strategy produces a more intriguing work of art. I believe man has the right to choose his reality. In my reality I have chosen my own destiny; time and fate have confirmed that producing art is my positive contribution to society. The work I produce both symbolizes and creates optimism for life in our industrialized society. It also challenges the over-saturation of mindless sexual and violent images in pop visual culture. I put forth a passionate effort to produce art that has a spiritual, political and urban aesthetic. My artwork has been executed by the use of computer based design layouts and constructed with various art mediums, such as spray paint, oil paint, and acrylic. The subjects of the work include figure studies, human nature and political issues. My goal is to break the preconceived idea of what most people may think aerosol art is, highlighting the difference between aerosol art and graffiti. The spray can is an example of a post-World War II product that was not originally conceived for producing art, but as a household tool. Through the use of the Chiaroscuro technique, combined with classical and modern influences, my work seeks to have the spray can recognize as an artistic medium. Further, the nature of the medium being an aerosol can use for industry and aesthetic vandalism, is an icon for the fusion of art and technology. As such, it is a form of modern art.
