Crawl of London Science Pubs
from The Mr Science Show August 29, 2008
Last night I attended the most interestingly themed pub-crawl I have ever been on. It was a science crawl of London pubs. The pub crawl was held in association with the inaugural science blogging conference, Science Blogging 2008: London, hosted by Nature Network, in collaboration with the Royal Institution. The aim of the conference is to bring together science bloggers from around the world to discuss the pressing issues in science, science communication, publishing and education. What role does blogging play? I am going tomorrow, so come and say hi! We went to four different pubs, starting with the Jeremy Bentham, then moving to the Museum Tavern, the Ben Crouch Tavern and the John Snow. Our tour guide for the evening was Londonphile and editor of the Nature Network, Matt Brown. On this week's podcast, I chatted to Matt about the four pubs we attended. A few other science bloggers also pop up in the podcast, and they are:The Questionable Authority,Frank Norman,Deep thoughts and sillyness,Grrl Scientist. Listen here:

Elephants march at dusk: Video
from Wildcast - African bush adventures live-blogged to a screen near you August 27, 2008
Well the lions didn’t roar me to sleep but they did wake me at dawn. They were somewhere in the hills that I couldn’t get to. I’m happy to be safely back here after a rather stressful drive. Doing this drive in the daytime is just fine, but once it’s dark it takes on a whole new agenda. These main roads are narrow. Only one lane each way and without any shoulder on either side. Really narrow. So when passing huge trucks you feel like you have to squeeze yourself to the side of the road, at the same time being sure not to drop off. And if that’s not bad enough, you have to contend with livestock that wander across the roads. Mainly cattle and donkeys and you just don’t see them till the last minute. Of course if there’s an oncoming car, you see even less. Pretty scary stuff. Luckily when I encountered a donkey on the road there was no oncoming traffic. Even so I saw it at the last minute and had to swerve at high speed to try and miss it. It was plumb in the middle of the road when I first saw it and luckily moving, just in time to give me enough gap to get past. Although I think I hit its tail. Now there was an adrenalin rush! Something I haven’t had in ages in the bush. Just goes to show the bush is a safer place than being out there travelling. Today was very hazy and very humid, but it soon warmed up and bye bye any moisture. With the hot dry weather the Tamboti trees are dropping leaf, which the nyala and impala are feasting on. These trees are very poisonous to man but the antelope just love the leaves. I was heading back home towards dusk when I saw plenty of elephants crossing the airstrip on their way to Simbiri dam. The sun was still up but the elephant timed it just right (I don’t what it’s right for), like they always do, that they get to the dam after the sun has set and there’s not enough light for me to film. I’m sure they do it just to be mean to me. But as the herds came out the woodlands towards the dam, they filed towards and past me. And they just kept coming and moving on. But when Mandlovu, Chip and their family got to the car, they stopped as I spoke them, sniffed the car for a couple of minutes and moved on with the herds. It was just magical! Had they come to say ‘hello – where’ve you been all this time?’ Whatever it was, it sure was the most magical greeting and reminded me why I so love it out here. I didn’t get any such greeting when in town the last few days. Well, I lie, my daughters went wild and we had the most lovely time. This guy came tearing out the woodland charging towards me, but he soon lost his courage and came to a grinding halt in a cloud of dust. Just boys being boys. adventure, africa, african, animal, animal kingdom, animals, blog, blogumentary, bush, bush knowledge, conservation, documentary, ecotraining, education, elephant, elephants, experience, experience adventure, film, filmmaker, flickr, GLTP, gonarezhou, Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, malilangwe, mashable, narrowcasting, nature, Open Content Alliance, pamushana, peace parks, photo, photos, podcasting, teach, video, wildcast, wildcasting, wilderness, wildlife, wildlife documentary, youtube, zimbabwe

Quantum Cello
from WNYC's Radio Lab August 25, 2008
Photo by Lane Hartwell Zoe Keating is the cellist from our live show, War of the Worlds. She used to play with the band Rasputina and now solos and records music for films, such as horror flick, The Devil s Chair (coming out September 30th) and a PBS documentary on Lincoln s assassination. Her music process reminded us a bit of ours (looping and layering sound) so she and Jad sat down together in San Francisco to talk shop and listen to some unreleased stuff off her new album (as of yet untitled). In this podcast, you ll hear Jad and Zoe discuss the physics (if not metaphysics) of looping sound and how to use a 17th century instrument to make avant-garde electronic music: If you do not see flash audio player please install the latest flash player. Download MP3 You can see her on tour with Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls in September and October. You can also check out her album, One Cello X 16: Natoma. Read more about her here.

UK CLIMATE ACTION
from The Radio Ecoshock Show August 22, 2008
Thousands gather in Britain's climate camp against coal; 3 protests, police over-reaction. Is it "Green Stalinism" versus decentralized power? That is a recurring theme between those calling for big government action - and the anarchists who believe the government poisons everything it touches. Quotes from George Monbiot, and music from the camp. Plus a good interview on getting the public to accept alternative clean power. Will a windmill really blot out the landscape? Or is it better to accept climate change? How to overcome public resistance, and empower those who are ready to change. The police seemed to think any public gathering was a good chance to practice mass anti-terrorist games. They raided the peaceful camp for no reason, and confiscated such dangerous items as crayons (from the kids) which could be used to make signs. The media focused on the discovery of a set of kitchen knives, which proved deadly intent. Actually, it proved there were thousands of people on site to feed. Try slicing onions by hand. The protest was to stop the construction of two new coal fired power plants at Kingsnorth (which is actually in the South East of Britain). After more or less closing down their coal industry, and lowering emissions with natural gas, the government of Gordon Brown is turning back the clock, to go back to coal. Never mind their own lofty greenhouse gas promises. This regressive action threatens us all. How can anyone ask the Chinese to stop, when rich Britain, loaded with wind and tidal power options, decides to build more coal plants? Even though a huge group of scientists in the UK have protested building new coal, and even though the protesters were merely asking for what the government promised - the entire police apparatus of the state was used against the generally middle-class and student protesters. While the camp was going, with clean energy and food raising workshops, there were three protests: one against the Royal Bank of Scotland, which funds more dirty energy than anyone in the country; a very innovative campaign at Heathrow airport, trying to get holiday-goers to consider their climate impact; and the main attempt to get into the Kingsnorth site (where an old coal fired plant is still belching black into the sky). All peaceful attempts, met generally with police violence. That is the only answer the state has, apparently, to people gathering to protect the climate. And the media focused on that, of course, rather than the issues. Headlines about knives, hardly anything about the ecosphere going down the crapper. Stupid humans. The show is composed of clips broadcast live from the Climate Camp in early August - another useful demonstration of the new media. Don't like the old media? Do it yourself. A great work-together project by several UK community stations and radio activists. All of this: North America (and Australia) - take notes! We don't have to sit around moaning about stupid coal plants being built. Let's get together and act! Britain leads the way. Alex. Radio live from Camp.
