Has the AIDS epidemic peaked? A recent U.N. report says infections rates peaked in 1998 with 3.4 million new cases. That sounds like good news, but is it? In 2007, there will be about 2.5 million new cases of the disease. In King County last June, over 6,000 residents reported living with HIV or AIDS; not counting undiagnosed or unreported infections. Do local numbers reflect the global drop? Are we at a natural tipping point with this disease? Or will numbers rise without constant vigilance? Is an AIDS vaccine the only real answer?
