Square Wave
from yairman July 08, 2008
Sculpture installation. Video and audio playback is regulated by pendulum position. Sand is feed with a solenoid valve at a rate and direction determined by a combination of pendulum position and input from a light sensor (detecting the presence and general position of viewers).

pushBall camera tracking
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 08, 2008
This javascript / Max-MSP-Jitter program is interacted with via camera based computer vision tracking. The physical position of a tracked object, in this example a plastic easter egg, is translated into on screen coordinates for the large sphere in the program. The small spheres have a steady downward motion except when a collision is detected with the large sphere. When this occurs they are pushed out of the way by the large sphere. The collisions are emphasized by the audio feedback. This feedback is produce in a frequency modulation synthesis MSP program. Although it is not perceptible in this video, the colors of the individual small spheres determine the fundamental frequency and harmonicity of the sounds, so each color has a unique sound quality.

bouncy apple bell thing
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 07, 2008
This strange little video shows a test of a program that renders 3D video objects, moves them with simple collision detection and acceleration calculations and produces audio feedback for all detected collisions between objects and walls. The program is a combination of Javascript and Max-MSP-Jitter. The 3-D images are produced with OpenGL commands. All acceleration calculations and collision detection is created in the Javascript program. (A careful observer will note that the objects do not show a realistic conservation of momentum. This will be achieved in a future generation of this project. For a billards game this would be critical, for other applications, this simplified simulation might be perfectly fine.) The audio feedback is produced with frequency modulation synthesis in MSP. The y-axis position of the apple determines the fundamental frequency for its sound. This creates the rising and falling pitch that corresponds with the rise and fall of the apple.

accelerometer controlled Inclined plane physics simulation 1
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 07, 2008
A Max-MSP-Jitter program produces a 3-D video display of a sphere resting on a planar surface. Using a tangible interaction object (like a Wiimote), that I designed and fabricated, I control the tilt of the plane. The interaction object, which is called "sGlowStick" includes a two axis accelerometer. The accelerometer data reflects the tilt of the physical object which in turn controls the tilt of the virtual plane. Data from the sGlowStick is sent via Bluetooth to the computer. As the virtual plane tilts, the virtual sphere moves according to inclined plane physics calculations, so it responds in a realistic way, as if one was balancing a real ball on a physical plane. The sGlowStick also includes a pressure sensor, RFID reader and LEDs to facilitate camera based motion tracking. These features are not used in this example.

sphereBot controlled with computer vision motion tracking
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 07, 2008
A spherical robot that I designed and fabricated is controlled with computer vision (CV) motion tracking. The CV is implemented in Max-MSP-Jitter. The robot's servos are driven by an Arduino microcontroller. Communication between the robot and the computer is via Bluetooth. The two axes of motion detected by the camera (built in on the laptop) regulate the signals to the two servos in the robot. When the tracked object, in this case a plastic easter egg, is in the center of the camera point of view (POV), the robot is stationary (though in this example it is difficult to find that perfect point). When the tracked object moves toward the edges of the camera POV the pulse width modulation to the servos is shifted to run the motors faster. The direction from center determines the direction of the rotation. The servos are standard hobby motors modified for 360 degree rotation.
