In the Park
from PersonalorAuto-biographical - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) September 16, 2008
This footage is a sample from an afternoon spent in my neighborhood park. I wanted to explore looks that we could create with our Letus 35 adaptor on the Panasonic HPX500. The adaptor allows us to use all the lenses from our 35mm size cameras. With this tool we can use many special lenses that are not normally available to use on a video camera. All this footage was shot in slow motion at 60 frames per second recorded at 24P.

Hockey East Championship Game Flavor - Letus Extreme
from Vimeo / Videos stevegarfield likes April 24, 2008
I was asked by a production company to shoot behind the scenes footage of the Hockey East Finals at the TD Bank North Garden in Boston, MA. Boston College was taking on the University of Vermont. This footage would be used in a “flavor” segment of a DVD documentary about the hockey league. It would be intercut with network television coverage. All sound was recorded with the on board shotgun microphone. The idea was to get what the network television cameras could not. I decided to try to shoot this footage with my Letus. This would give the shots a film appearance with a shallow depth of field. The footage would look much different from what the network could provide. This video is a sample of what I shot before, during and after the hockey game. I used one lens the entire time. My fastest prime, the Nikon 50mm f1.4. This is a fat piece of glass and it let a lot of light into the Letus adapter. Most of the shots were from inside dark florescent lit locker rooms and back hallways. I need all the help I could get to make usable pictures. Some of the shots were bumped up with 9dB gain. The client asked for standard definition 4:3. My Sony HVR-Z1U can shoot HDV 1080i, DVCAM SD, and MiniDV SD footage. This is a real plus because every once in a while, a client needs SD. It is so hard for me to look at the tiny SD 4:3 window and compose shots. I have lived in the widescreen world for so long now. It is great to own a camera that can work almost any job. The video was edited with Final Cut Pro and I used Magic Bullet Looks for the film look and color grading. I really funkified this video. It looks much different from the original tapes. I also used a filter effect to add more color saturation. Check out my website for more info: tomguilmette.com Cast: Tom Guilmette

Powerline Sunset - Letus Extreme Film - Time Lapse HDTV
from Vimeo / Recent Public Videos April 12, 2008
Powerline Sunset - Letus Extreme Film - Time Lapse HDTV from Tom Guilmette on Vimeo. I grabbed my PMW-EX1 and drive to the powerlines about three miles from my house. I knew the sunset was gonna be sweet. But, I was about ten minutes to late. I saw the soft ball of fire just drop out of site as I parked the car. I managed to get a few shots as it became darker by the minute and the sound of thunder rumbled in the distance. I used interval recording and shot 720 30p at 1 frame per 1 second of time elapsed. I used my 35mm f2.8 and my 200mm f3.5 lenses to shoot this footage. As always, I had the Letus Extreme attached to the front of my camera. I did not have time to set up my motorized pan head for a panning time lapse. Next time... I edited this in Final Cut Pro and color graded with Magic Bullet Looks. I over-saturated the colors in the video. TRT: 44 seconds Go to http://www.tomguilmette.com for more. Cast: Tom Guilmette

Franklin Time Short Film - HDTV
from Vimeo / Recent Public Videos March 18, 2008
Franklin Time Short Film - HDTV from Tom Guilmette on Vimeo. I went out and shot some time lapse this afternoon in my town. This is the result of one hour of tape. I used a telescope computerized pan head for the slow pans. Please excuse the crudity of the edits, I exported this project before I rendered it. I never actually watched it until the final export. I will do many more of these. This was just a test. I know what looks good and bad now by watching this video. The model of the telescope is the Celestron Nexstar 114GT. I used eight AA batteries to produce 12 volts of power and the system comes with a remote control to enter star data. I simply set the rate to 1-9 (1 slowest) and hold down the left or right buttons. I then yank the data line and the head keeps on panning until I pull the power source. Another option would be using a spring clamp on the remote to hold down the left or right arrow. The system does tilt, but there is a built in clutch that disables the gear system so that the cogs don’t strip when force is applied. The camera and Letus contraption is just to heavy to do more than a 5 degree tilt up or down. I shot this in Franklin and surprisingly, nobody bothered me. A few cop cars moved slowly past me, but none stopped. In this day and age, seeing a guy with a camera mounted on a contraption with wires and battery packs hanging off it could raise terror suspicion. The video was edited with Final Cut Pro and I used a filter effect to add more color saturation. I did not vignette this project. Music Selection: Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts II - Track 18 Special thanks to: TJ Powers for helping me get this idea off the ground. Cast: Tom Guilmette
