Decades of war and internal strife have left Cambodia with one of the highest proportions of people disabled by land mines in the world. The country's only professional sports league is the Cambodian National Volleyball League (Disabled), a scrappy network of volleyball teams whose players once fought against each other in times of civil war and now face each other on the court. They also sponsor a wheelchair racing program which empowers women who would traditionally be confined to their homes. Currently, the national volleyball team is ranked number three in the world, and regularly defeats non-disabled teams including an Australian navy squad which has tasted defeat three years running. These national heroes may have lost limbs to land mines, but they'll still whoop you in volleyball. UNICEF: Young Chechen landmine survivors score on football pitch
from Sports - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 25, 2008
GROZNY, Chechnya, Russian Federation, 16 June 2008 -- The legacy of conflict is all over this indoor football field, where 11 young men, all missing a limb, regularly gather to score a goal for beating the odds. A local non-governmental organization know as Laman Az (Chechen for 'Voice of the Mountains') created the football team with help from UNICEF in 2002 as part of the Mine Action Survivor Assistance programme. UNICEF provided the team with basic equipment and restored the premises for training in the only surviving gym in war-torn Grozny. UNICEF's Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Maria Calivis, recently visited the team and commended its young members for their courage, calling them "an example for all of us." The Seeds of the Devil - 38-min Documentary
from YouTube :: Tag // lost May 08, 2008
July 1998 A revealing portrayal of the daily struggle against being killed or maimed by a lurking mine. Landmines are disabling approximately two hundred people a week in Angola. It is feared that just as many die but the accidents often go unreported. Children are more vulnerable and are the least likely to survive an explosion. They are taught a new macabre playground song: "If you find something and you don't know what it is, don't touch it because you could die". Sensitive questioning reveals the feelings of a generation of wounded children. Daniel is 12 and lost his legs when his friend picked-up a mine. He is lucky - his other 4 friends died. Many kids suffer to walk with the artificial limbs. Antonia cannot bear to use her cumbersome prosthesis. She lives her life between the yard and her bedroom, swinging on her arms to get from Place to Place. A peace-time army of mine-clearers try to clear the fields so people can get on with cultivating desperately-needed food. But it's slow work and for every landmine that's cleared somebody somewhere is laying another deadly mine. Jerry White - I Will Not Be Broken
from YouTube :: Tag // lost May 01, 2008
Interview with Jerry White, author of "I Will Not Be Broken: Five Steps to Overcoming a Life Crisis." The loss of a loved one, a painful divorce, or a serious physical injury---we must all, at one point, face tragedy---unavoidable moments that divide our lives into "before" and "after." How do we muscle our way through tough times and emerge stronger, wiser---even grateful for our struggle? In 1984, author Jerry White lost his leg---and almost his life---in a landmine accident. He has endured the pain of loss and the challenge of rebuilding. As cofounder of Survivors Corps, White has interviewed thousands of victims of tragedy. With this book, he shares what he has learned. White outlines a very specific five-step program to coping with disaster; to achieving strength and hope; and to turning tragedy into triumph. In their own words, his survivor friends and colleagues share their stories. It's a group that includes the well known, like Lance Armstrong, Nelson Mandela, and the late Princess Diana, and also everyday survivors. Through their stories and the author's words, the book takes readers step-by-step through the process of not only surviving tragedy and victimhood, but going on to thrive. Cement Mixer vs Cluster Bomb!
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) April 19, 2008
A number of governments are fighting to exclude certain cluster bombs from an international ban. They claim that certain models, including the M85 are non-hazardous as they have self destruct mechanisms and are rendered inactive if they fail to detonate on impact. The M85s bomblets that were dropped on Lebanon in 2006 have been shown to have a failure rate of about 10% and the 'non-hazardous duds' are not as inert as is claimed. This film features a 'non-hazardous dud' in a cement mixer.
