Demand Media Grows its Niche-Content Empire with New Site
from Beet.TV August 07, 2008
LIVESTRONG.com, Demand Media's newest venture and a trademark of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, wants to differentiate itself from other health information sites with its variety of high-quality content and the community surrounding that content, Director of Community Lex Friedman says.Demand Media CEO Richard Rosenblatt, the former CEO of MySpace, knows a thing or two about social communities. Friedman told me that his MySpace experience is "tremendoulsy influential with what we're doing at LIVESTRONG." LIVESTRONG.com's interactive "Dare To" feature allows users to take dares together to change something in their lives, like quitting smoking or losing weight. In addition to challenging and encouraging each other, users can also ask questions of the experts from the site's 5,000 original video clips, which cover topics ranging from fitness to fishing. The site, launched in June, accrued video quickly largely thanks to the connections of Demand Media how-to video site Expert Village, Friedman says. John Heilemann at Business 2.0 estimated Demand Media's VC value to be at $500 million over a year ago, but reported that Rosenblatt insisted he wanted to build his media empire, not sell it. It looks like he's sticking to his word.--Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer

from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) January 28, 2008
MEDIAVEST is in talks with two cinema ad networks to transfer up to $100 million in prime-time TV ads to in-theater movie advertising. President of investment and activation Donna Speciale said that with ratings continuing to erode and a lengthy writers strike, We can t keep our money in TV. The company is speaking with National CineMedia and Screenvision, which control a combined 29,000 screens. JEFF ZUCKER criticized the economics of mobile TV, saying that phone carriers reap 90% of the profits and that the technology is not that important. The NBCU CEO was speaking at Davos in a group that included Howard Stringer, Eric Schmidt and Kevin Martin. Zucker said NBCU is only playing mobile TV in a small way. Google s Schmidt took a more positive view of the technology, citing the ability to generate revenue using targeted ads based on a mobile user s specific location. Schmidit believes that mobile advertising will take in over $1 billion in revenue by 2012. NBC has moved Quarterlife s premiere up to Tuesday February 16th, following The Biggest Loser. Starting in March the Internet-turned-network show will move to Sunday evening at 9 PM. The Tuesday premiere is meant to give the show a boost by borrowing some of The Biggest Loser s momentum. In the Sunday slot it will compete with Oprah s Big Give on ABC and reruns on both CBS and FOX. QTRAX will launch its free P2P music download service with over 25 million copyrighted tracks, including content from all four major labels. The ad-supported venture will split ad revenue with copyright holders based on play counts. SONY ERICSSON has also made progress in launching its online music store, which will open in May. The company has signed deals with three of the big four labels. In related news, AMAZON announced plans to take its MP3 store international sometime in the near future. Jonathan Vaughters
from The Competitors Radio Show January 06, 2008
Jonathan Vaughters was a professional cyclist who basically quit his sport young, at the age of 30, partly because he was frustrated by the rampant drug use. Now Vaughters is running the Slipstream Cycling Team and accountability is the name of the game. His team will administer 1200 drug tests to their athletes this year alone and the media will be invited to training camps so that they can see that Team Slipstream is clean. He is out to change the culture of the sport of cycling by hopefully proving that you can be competitive and drug free at the same time. Vaughters was incredibly open and honest in this conversation.
