*QUICKTIME *Phone The ROCORI baseball team was back in action against the Albany Huskies in an elimination game for the Spartans. ROCORI sent Luke Vossen to the mound in hopes that he could pitch well and give them a chance to win. Not only did Vossen pitch well, he pitched a no-hitter as the Spartans beat up on the Huskies 10-0 in five innings. The Spartans took advantage of six Huskies errors and did not look back. Stay tuned to DigElog ROCORI for the Spartans final game of the season later this week. ***************************************** Special thanks to Central Minnesota Federal Credit Union who sponsored this story. The Sheriff Who Came to DinnerThe Sheriff Who Came to Dinner
from Storynory, Audio Stories For Kids
July 06, 2008

Download the audio Robin Hood s most trusted outlaw is Little John. In this rollicking, uproarious tale, Little John becomes a servant of the Sheriff of Nottingham - and he is the worst servant the Sheriff ever had. Once again, Robin Hood proves that he is the politest robber in all history, even if some of his bandits are not quite so well-mannered as he is. Also see our slightly gentler tale, The Guest of Robin Hood. Read by Natasha. Duration 13.13. Robin Hood liked to invite guests to dine with him at his table in Sherwood Forrest. If his guests were rich and powerful he would ask them to pay for their dinner with gold or jewels. But if they were poor or down on their luck, he would help them out with money from his own coffers. In this story, I’ll tell you how Robin entertained the Sheriff of Nottingham – and he was very rich and powerful indeed. Robin Hood’s most trusted outlaw was Little John. In fact, there was nothing little about him at all. He was huge. And if there was one thing that he really loved it was his food. In particular, he liked to eat venison – which is the meat of deer. There were plenty of deer in Sherwood Forrest, but it was forbidden to shoot them by punishment of death. The law didn’t stop Little John, because he feared nothing or nobody. Sometimes he would arrive at Robin Hood’s layer with a bag full of hares, partridges, and pheasants and he would say to Robin: “Come on my friend, let’s get a good fire going. I’ll soon have these ready for roasting and what a fine dinner we shall have.” But quite often Robin would make Little John wait for his dinner until a rich and respectable guest had come to join them. And at those times, when Little John was hungry, he would become very tetchy and bad tempered indeed. All the other robbers who lived with Robin Hood would stay out of his way, because nobody wanted to get into a fight with a man as big and strong as Little John. One day, Robin asked Little John to go into the city of Nottingham to see if he could pick up any news or gossip. It so happened, that on that same day there was shooting competition in the market place. Little John could not resist a chance to show of his skill with his bow and arrow, and he paid the fee of one penny to join the contest. Each archer had to shoot an arrow into a post. Those who missed dropped out, and those that hit went on to the next round when the posts were moved further back. Little John split six posts down the middle with his arrows. Nobody else could match him. The Sheriff of Nottingham gave him the first prize and declared: “This man is the best archer that I ever did see. Say now, my hearty young man, what is your name and where were you born?” “I was born in Yorkshire,” replied Little John. “And my name is Reynold Grenelef. “Well then, Reynold Grenelef,” said the Sheriff, “Come and work for me. I will pay you 20 marks a year and give you food and shelter.” If he had known who Little John really was, he would have taken him not to his house, but to his gaol, for the Sheriff was the law around those parts, and the law had no greater enemies than Robin Hood and Little John. At first Little John tried to think of a cheeky reply to the Sheriff’s offer, and then he thought to himself. “So help me. I shall be the worst servant he ever had.” And he said out loud: “I thank your Lordship. I shall come to your house this evening and start my service for you. I promise that you will never had another servant the like of Reynold Grenelef.” That evening, Little John settled into his new home in the servant’s quarters in the mansion belonging to the Sherriff of Nottingham. He had not eaten all day, and so he called out to the steward who was in charge of the dining hall: “Good Steward I pray, when will dinner be?” To which the Steward replied: “There will be no dinner for you till the master gets back.” “And when will that be?” asked Little John. “Not till next week, for he’s gone hunting with the Abbot.” At this, Little John picked up the steward and began to shake him: “What? A whole week without food? That will be the worse for my temper, and your head, for I swear I’ll take a crowbar and beat you with it. The butler heard the row, and came to give the new servant a clout round the ears, but when I saw the size of Little John, he held back. Little John pushed past him and kicked door open. Inside the kitchen he found a keg of wine, which he cracked open and began to guzzle from. Then he seized a leg of lamb out of the pantry, and started to tear chunks of meat off it with his teeth. The cook had not seen Little John before, and was amazed that a stranger should dare to burst into his kitchen and help himself to food and drink. He came up to Little John and gave him three good punches in the belly: “Little John looked up and said: “Give me more of those. I liked them well.” Then the cook drew his sword, and Little John drew his, and as neither would back away, they set about each other with their blades. Out on the road they fought, and across the green. Their clashing steel made so much noise that you might have thought that two whole armies were in battle. Their swords were made thick and strong for breaking open armour. But neither man grew tiered as they wielded their heavy weapons for over an hour. “I swear by my true life,” said Little John, “That you are the best swordsman that I ever did see. If only you can shoot as well with a bow, then you should come with me to Green Wood and join the band of Robin Hood. You’ll have three new sets of clothes a year and 20 marks for your purse.” And the cook replied: “Set down your sword and we shall be friends.” And as they were both hungry after the fight, they went back to the Sheriff’s house and stuffed themselves with sweetmeats from the pantry. After that, they gathered all the precious things that they could find around the house. They took goblets and plates, trays and caskets. Nor did they forget the silver spoons. They found a crowbar and broke into the safe where they fond plenty of money in gold coins. All this they put into a chest and rode off with it to Green Wood and Robin Hood. Robin was greatly amused by Little John’s story of his time in the service of the Sheriff, and he was indeed pleased with the chest full of loot. But he said: “I cannot eat off the Sheriff’s plate unless his Lordship joins us here in Green Wood for dinner.” And thinking this over, Little John said: “Then let me fetch the Sheriff to you.” He rode off across the forest to the Sheriff’s hunting lodge, and waited for him to return back from the day’s hunting with his hounds. When the Sheriff saw his new servant the said: “So look who it is. Reynold Grenelef. What brings you here my man?” Little John knelt before him and said: “Good master. Five miles from here is one of the fairest sights I ever did see : Tender young hares and a herd of sixty or more deer. I did not dare aim my arrows for fear of the law, but thought I d come and to tell you what I saw.” The Sheriff replied that it would be a delight to watch Little John display his hunting skills with the Long Bow and arrow and added: “Fear not the law, for I am the law here and I would love to see this sport.” Then Little John led the Sheriff across the forest but not to the hunting grounds, for he took him instead to the camp of Robin Hood and his band of outlaws. When the Sheriff saw that he was surrounded by brigands he exclaimed: “Reynold Grenelef. You have betrayed me!” And Little John replied. “Master, I swear it was not my fault, for your steward and your butler would not give me dinner.” Then Little John made the Sheriff take off his fine clothes and gave them to his cook, who put them on. Robin invited the Sheriff, just wearing his shirt and britches, to sit down at his table, with this cook on one side and his “servant”, Little John, on the other. He placed before him his own silver plate, and filled his own goblet with wine. The feast was a good one, but the Sheriff had lost his appetite. He did not believe that he would leave the forest alive. “Cheer up Lord Sheriff,” said Robin, “For I give you your life. You can live here with me for a year and I’ll teach you to be an outlaw.” The Sheriff replied: “Better that in the morning you cut off my head.” And Robin said: “Better in the morning that you should go free. But first you must swear an oath by St. Mary that you will never do any harm to me or my men.” The Sheriff was too proud to agree to such a promise right away, but in the morning, after a night as the guest of Robin Hood, he thought better of it, and he agreed to swear the oath: “For as long as I live I shall be Robin Hood’s best friend, and if any day or night, by water or by land, I shall ever find Robin Hood or any of his men, I shall help them in any way I can. And when he had sworn his oath, the Sheriff went on his way home, still wearing just his shirt and britches, and riding on mule.

from DigElogROCORI
July 06, 2008

Dobry den! (Good day!) My apologies for taking so long to send you another update. Things have been very busy for both the boys and the staff. The Festival has been in full swing and the final concert in Dvorak Hall is tonight. The boys continue to receive compliments from Festival staff and the other conductors – compliments about their performance, behaviour, camaraderie and openness to interacting with boys from other choirs. Here’s a little run-down of what we’ve done recently: Thursday: In the morning the boys had their solo concert performance and received wonderful reviews, especially about Mi’kmaq Honour Song. They then spent the afternoon in Prague. Unfortunately the weather was uncooperative, but they made do. The security guards at St. Vitus Cathedral, in the middle of the Prague Castle allowed the boys to stay in the church during the huge rainstorm and the boys sang in the church, entertaining other tourists visiting the church at that time. They also visited the Astronomical Clock and Charles Bridge. The rain took away some of our shopping time, but we did end up going into a mall where many of the boys bought Czech soccer jerseys. Friday: The first gala Festival Concert in Dvorak Hall. The boys performed impressively, and in fact one of our own boys (Charlie Slivnik) began the entire concert with a solo of Bob Chilcott’s “Dona Nobis Pacem”. It was an incredibly hectic day, but the boys did so well. They were rewarded at the end with a giant picnic, and although the 4th of July fireworks were cancelled due to weather, the boys played soccer at night and had a good time. Saturday: This was a completely free day. We started the day playing the Estonians in soccer (sadly, we were humiliated, 7-3, but it was still fun). The afternoon consisted of swimming in the amazing AquaCenter and having a pizza dinner at the SportCafe. Today is the final festival concert and you can listen to it LIVE on Czech Radio. The concert is at 5:00pm CEST (10:00am in Minnesota). Go to: http://www.rozhlas.cz/zive/#vltava MISSED IT LIVE... download the entire 2 hour program (MP3 - 160 mb file ) Download StJohnsBoysChoirCzech.mp3 As we are heading into the mountains tomorrow, we will likely not get another chance to send you an update, so I hope you get a chance to listen to the concert and we look forward to seeing you all back in Minnesota VERY early on Thursday morning! Na shledanou! (Goodbye!) _________________ André Heywood Artistic Director, The St. John's Boys' Choir

This weekend, take some time to escape from the business and stress of your daily grind and make a hammock and lay around in it. MP4 | Blip.tv | Youtube | iTunes | PDF Watch the video and print out this snazzy PDF. Now get to it! You re going to need a few other materials to create this project: 3 1/2 Yards of durable fabric. (less if you re shorter than me - I m 6 1 ) Rope that is rated to hold humans. Climbing rope or that kind of strapping that s used to tie down stuff on the back of pickup trucks. Use better judgment than I did. Clothesline is not an option! (My butt still hurts!) Sewing machine and thread. Make a double folded hem for the sides and a tube at the top and the bottom. Go ahead and customize it if you like. On one of the hammocks I made for a friend, I added pockets! Make sure to take photos and upload them to flickr and put them in the Etsy in Action flickr pool. Safety: As you can see in the video, you do this project at your own risk. In retrospect, I wish I had used better rope rated for holding up humans and also had my hammock closer to the ground so I wouldn t have fallen so far! I m going to go get some climbing rope or strapping to avoid hurting myself again. (I bruised my butt!) July 03, 2008

*QUICKTIME *Phone Folks, it’s that time of year again. The weather is gorgeous and the boat’s been out of storage now for the last month. As the family and friends come into our gorgeous State, it’s important to remember a few safety items. In this story, our three city administrators discuss some issues regarding the 4th of July and what is going on in the ROCORI area. The subject that came up most in this story is the use of common sense. When on the lake or just out shooting some bottle rockets, please use good judgment and common sense. This is a time to celebrate our independence, not make a trip to the emergency room. DigElog ROCORI would like to wish everyone out there a safe and happy 4th of July. ************************************ Consumer Fireworks Information The sale, possession and use of certain non-explosive and non-aerial consumer fireworks is now permitted in Minnesota. Examples of legal fireworks include items such as sparklers, cones and tubes that emit sparks, and novelty items like snakes, and party poppers. A more detailed list is available at the link below. Consumer fireworks may not be used on public property (i.e. parks, roads, alleys, schools, government property, etc.). Purchasers of consumer fireworks must be at least 18 years old and retailers are required to check photo identification of purchasers before selling these products. Explosive and aerial fireworks are prohibited for public sale, possession and use. Prohibited fireworks include firecrackers, bottle rockets, missiles, roman candles, mortars and shells. Consumer Fireworks Fact Sheets, Fireworks Safety, Fireworks Recalls ************************************ VIEWER COMMENTS: Hi Duane - State law does not prohibit the use of legal fireworks within city limits. However state law also does not restrict local ordinances from doing so. I would recommend contacting city hall. if they have no ordinance you are allowed to use the fireworks within the city. If there is an ordinance you would have to comply within the specifics of the ordinance. Happy 4th. Representative Larry Hosch ***************** Duane, I'm not sure of Cold Spring's code... but generally use of fireworks is restricted in city limits... at least the 'illegal' types. Sparklers, snakes and party poppers... go to town with. I doubt anyone will care unless we are in a very dry spell where a fire hazard may be an issue. Dan Richmond City Administrator
Wild Dogs feed pups: VideoWild Dogs feed pups: Video
from Wildcast - African bush adventures live-blogged to a screen near you
July 03, 2008

When I arrived at the den in the dark this morning one of the adults barked at me and left. And for the rest of the day there was no sign of the adults or the pups. I could hear the pups squabbling in the den but they didn’t venture out without the adults there. Midday I left the den for a few hours. This is usually a time when nothing happens. (I’ve noticed it with these dogs and also the previous pack I’ve followed. Midday is their main sleep time. Night time too.) Back again in the early afternoon and still not a peep from the adults. As the light was fading and only just enough for me to film, the pups came out to play on their own without the adults being there. This is brilliant news. So hopefully in the days to come they will now be brave enough to play outside the den! At very last light the alpha female and alpha male arrived to feed the pups. They were both well fed. I’m not sure if they killed this afternoon or if this was from the morning’s hunt. They seemed oblivious to me in the hide. Great stuff. But after a while when I moved the male saw me and barked. But only once. The pups of course scattered but were soon out again looking for scraps. As it got dark I packed up. This time the dogs were a little more serious in their barking but I like to think they’re getting used to me. Not too likely after only a week or so at it. It also seems that these are the only 2 adults in the pack. There’s been no sign of the other female. Has she maybe gone off and had pups on her own? Has she teamed up with Whisky? Wouldn’t that be the best!

In the last few years, some colleges have pulled back from the policies everyone else says they d like to pull back from. Notably the sky hasn t fallen (and neither have their admissions numbers). Consider the cases of Hamilton College, which completely eliminated merit aid to spend more on need-based aid, and of Tufts University, which imposed a limit on its use of early decision. Both colleges are competitive in admissions, with excellent academic reputations – but neither has even close to the endowment or admissions clout of Harvard or the other institutions at the top of the admissions pecking order. + IHE: Many University of Chicago graduate students will need to find new loans — quite likely under terms less favorable than they are used to receiving. The Chicago Tribune reported that the university has had to end its use of the school as lender program for graduate students because of the inability of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to renew its line of credit. Chicago officials believe that the graduate students who have used the program will be able to find loans elsewhere, but will likely not find some key benefits of the old program, such as the lack of origination fees and a reduction in interest rates after four years of on-time repayment. + In some ways, what people were talking about legislating last year, the market has corrected this year + Prudence and caution are back in style + Had an interesting case yesterday when the computers would have said yes, I said no - and with good reason Scholarship Update + Scholarship Idol SLN Scholarship + A Scholarship Points Contest + Watch the embarrassingly poor quality YouTube video Free Stuff Thursday + Free cotton shopping bag + Free Snuggle fabric softener + Rhapsody free album with signup + Astroglide uh, yeah. + Swurl is pointless fun + Make your Mac sing in Terminal + Joys of Summer Gift Pack - 50 ziploc bags + Free pretzel from Auntie Anne s + Get lost a lot? This is a VideoCast! The Library of Congress has gone interactive! This is really cool! I had the pleasure of visiting the Library of Congress and seeing first hand the brand new exhibits and kiosks that help to bring history of how the United States was created, alive. This is a great trip to take for the 4th of July! If you aren t in the Washington, DC area, no worries! The Library of Congress has launched a brand new interactive website too. You can start your experience at myloc.gov! There is even a way to continue your experience from the Library at home. This is well worth the visit to myloc.gov, the Library of Congress of both! P.S. St. John's Boys' Choir Leaves For Czech RepublicSt. John's Boys' Choir Leaves For Czech Republic

*QUICKTIME *Phone The SJBC Concert Choir departed on Friday, June 27 for the Czech Republic where they will represent the United States and the state of Minnesota at the International Boys' and Men's Choral Festival in Hradec Králové and Prague. The boys will travel throughout various regions of the country, exploring the nation's architecture, history and culture. This marks the choirs second trip to the Czech Republic. In this video you'll join the boys and their parents as they say final farewells the day of their departure. The concert tour this year is being lead by the Boys' Choir new concert choir director André-Louis Heywood. André Heywood joined the St. John's Boys' Choir staff a year ago. He has a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the Don Wright Faculty of Music of the University of Western Ontario. Another special feature of this video story is a short interview with Br. Paul Richards as he reflects back on the very first trip the Boys' Choir took to Europe. It was for 21 days and included a combination of about 30 boys and numerous parent chaperones. This years tour will include 13 days in the Czech Republic. Friday, June 27 Sunday, June 29 The day began by attending mass at the Church of St. Vitus. The boys were *excellent*, being very attentive even though they didn't understand a single word. They also tried singing along with some of the Czech hymns. They then spent some time rehearsing in the lobby of the hostel, drawing a number of visitors passing by on the street. After lunch was some time for shopping followed by a tour of the town on wood rafts. The boys had a free evening for socialization. Monday, June 30 The boys started the day with a silent breakfast (a tribute to Br. Paul pehaps?) and then set off to Hradec Králové, the site of the Festival. They enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Duran restaurant and then headed into their venue rehearsal at Holy Spirit Cathedral, a 700-year old church in the Old Town square. The boys had a great rehearsal and then spent some time settling into their dorms and having dinner. They then attended the opening ceremonies of the festival, featuring a cameo performance by each choir. The boys were particularly impressed with Boni Pueri, the host choir, and with the American Boychoir who they will sing with in November. Tomorrow begin the long days of festival rehearsals!
