Vittorio Arrigoni was hit by flying glass as the Israeli navy used a high power water canon against the unarmed boats. The water canon smashed the glass surrounding the steering section of the boat, with shards lacerating Vittorios back. He was been taken to hospital immediately upon reaching shore, requiring ten stitches. International activists were accompanying Gazan fishermen 8 miles out from shore, as they have been doing regularly since they arrived in Gaza with the Free Gaza Movement boats. The Israeli navy have imposed severe restrictions on fishing Gazan waters, regularly attacking any boats attempting to fish over 3 nautical miles. With international accompaniment, fishermen have been regularly attempting to fish outside the Israeli imposed limits where they can . Following Israels disengagement from Gaza, Israeli restrictions on fishing were escalated so that Gazan fishermen could only fish safely within 3 nautical miles from the coast. On the 1st of September, international activists managed to film the Israeli navy opening fire on fishing boats 8 miles from the Gaza coast. 40,000 people in Gaza make a living from the fishing industry, yet this community has been decimated by Israeli restrictions on fishing rights and the prevention of fuel from reaching the Gaza Strip. According to the Fishing Syndicate in Gaza, fishermen need 40,000 litres of fuel and 40,000 litres of natural gas each day to operate throughout the high fishing season. Starting in April each year, there is a migration of fish from the Nile Delta to Turkish waters which Palestinian fishermen have traditionally relied upon. Yet Israel limits fishing 6 miles from the Gaza shore and regularly attacks those who venture further than 3 miles - over 70 fishermen were arrested last year by the Israeli forces. The large schools that form the migration are usually found 10 miles from shore. The average catch of fish was over 3000 tons a year in the 1990s, now it is around 500 tons directly due to the Israeli siege of Gaza. by http://guerrillaradio.iobloggo.com/ On Monday 10th of September, at about 5 pm, at a distance of 6 miles from the gazan coasts, in palestinian waters, an Israeli warship deliberately rushed at high speed against one of our fishing boats, that day without internationals on board. The impact was devastating for the fragile palestinian fishing boat (as it's shown in the video), the israeli warship ran into one side of the fishing boat, literally passing over it and then going on over and sailing on the opposite side. On the prow marks left on the wood from the Israeli engine turbines are perfectly visible. Luckily the boat was fishing at that time and it was, therefore, steady and well-judged in water, otherwise it would have tipped over with all the crew which would have certainly died. Even more luckily all members of the crew were astern cooking the meal that would have interrupted the Ramandan fast, at about 6 pm. Unluckily damages for the owner of the boat amount to 50.000 dollars, maybe more. Fixing them in short time will be impossible since in Gaza under siege is not possible to find all necessary materials. The only wounded person for this crazy terrorist attack, according to some military sources in Tel Aviv, is an Israeli soldier, since that suicide action seriously compromised also the Israeli crew life. Palestinian fishermen try every day to go offshore and do their job to survive, but they are always victims of israeli attacks which, against every international agreement and all human rights, as a general punishment, force them in a fishing area limited at 6 miles from the coast. Even though attacks often happen at just 3 miles offshore. Our presence as internationals, equipped with video cameras, work as a deterrent toward these daily crimes and Israeli terrorism. A boat captain told me that he was contacted by radio from an israeli warship and threatened in hebrew: "when the internationals will leave Gaza, our revenge will be dreadful". It's therefore a vital need for these innocent people that a group of internationals could always be present here in Gaza. I invite all european and american citizens to come here and actively participate to the defense of human rights, joining all of us ISM activists, against every crime and israeli terrorism, to be human. Kenyan turmoil Kenya has obvious reasons to celebrate these days. Reason being the 14 medal won by the country's Olympic team in Beijing and then watching Barack Obama, the son of a Kenyan civil servant accept the Democratic nomination to be president of the United States. But for how will this good cheer last when the country has yet to recover from the post election violence that ravaged the country and pushed forth a fragile coalition that is struggling to take decisions to tackle country's manifold political an economic problems. Since the bloodshed of January and February, the economy's progress has been jerky whether its agriculture or tourism. Exports have been hit by high fuel prices. The country's stock exchange is trading flat. While the double digit growth seems unattainable the prevailing mistrust between Mr. Kibaki's Party of National Unity (PNU) and Mr. Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement is denting investor confidence. Both the parties must understand that much has already been lost to the mechanisms of fractured, ethnically divided politics in the past, their drift cannot be allowed to create hurdles in further progress. Rising stocks The Indo US nuclear deal is a boon for Indian power and construction firms. The shares of these companies rose this week on hopes of growing business opportunities, after the Nuclear Suppliers Group nations lifted a 34-year-old nuclear trade ban against India.
