1940s Lumber Industry Kills the California Redwood Forest
from Revver - video Videos July 24, 2008
Author: QIP1 Added: Thu, 24 Jul 2008 11:55:55 -0800 Duration: 53Redwood Saga examines the history of the logging industry as it pertains to the beautiful California redwood forest. The film includes breathtaking footage of these lush landscapes in the 1940s, where trees spanned upwards 350 feet in the air. But this is not a nature appreciation film, because the next thing seen after the beautiful redwood forest footage is the measuring and preproduction process used to transform the beautiful trees into wood products! Axe wielding workers take pride in scaffolding the giant trees and cutting them down. The many steps of the lumber production process are documented, from chopping to moving to manufacturing the end product: specialty wood products like furniture for American homes. Included is tons of interesting information about the logging industry: images of forestry equipment and forestry supplies, such as booms, donkey engines, and flatcars are filmed, and the millponds where the lumber is stored is shown in great detail. As the narrator ...

Thursday 8:05 Protest against the 2010 emissions trading scheme
from RN Breakfast-individual stories July 23, 2008
In reaction to the government's plans to introduce an emissions trading scheme by 2010, Australia's carbon intensive export industries will lobby furiously in the coming months to sweeten, delay and weaken targets for greenhouse reductions. Leading the charge are the LNG (liquefied natural gas) and aluminium sectors. The Australian Aluminium Council says jobs and the very future of aluminium smelting in Australia are at stake.

Thursday 7:50 Inflation data for June quarter
from RN Breakfast-individual stories July 23, 2008
The inflation data for the June quarter came out yesterday and it was an ugly set of numbers. The Consumer Price Index rose to a near 17 year high of 4.5 per cent on an annual basis, well above the Reserve Bank's comfort zone. But this time economists are saying this jump in inflation won't necessarily trigger another rate rise from the RBA.

Thursday 7:42 Reconciliation action plan
from RN Breakfast-individual stories July 23, 2008
Later today, the Commonwealth Bank will join 90 other businesses and organisations from around Australia who have developed Reconciliation Action Plans. It's an attempt to make the grand notion of reconciliation real at the grass roots level. But it's also an attempt to stop what the bank's boss calls 'inappropriate lending practices' to Indigenous communities. Ralph Norris, who has a part Maori heritage, says there's no reason why an Indigenous person couldn't one day run a major bank.

Wednesday 8:05 Virgin Blue will weather oil price turbulence.
from RN Breakfast-individual stories July 22, 2008
Yesterday the head of Qantas Geoff Dixon predicted that rising fuel prices would lead to a global restructuring of aviation that will shut down many airlines. But Virgin Blue, Australia's number two airline, says it won't be one of them. Both Qantas and Virgin Blue have gone into damage control in the face of rising jet fuel costs, with Qantas announcing last week it would cut 1500 jobs. Virgin Blue has followed suit by grounding planes and introducing a new surcharge for checked baggage. But Virgin Blue's chief executive Brett Godfrey says the airline will weather the crisis, despite it being more damaging for aviation than either SARS or the September 11 attacks.

Wednesday 8:13 2008 Used Car Safety Ratings study: Small cars safer
from RN Breakfast-individual stories July 22, 2008
It's not often that there's good news for motorists struggling with high fuel prices, but new data shows that smaller cars, which are cheaper to run, are often safer as well. The 2008 Used Car Safety Ratings study, jointly-funded by the NRMA and Roads and Traffic Authority, analysed data from more than three-million road crashes in Australia and New Zealand in the ten years to 2006. The study, the largest of its kind in the world, shows that in terms of safety, we should forget petrol guzzling four wheel drives and big V-8's. The organisation says it's the medium and small sized cars that are the safest.

1950s Oil Additive Promo Film Sponsored by Texaco
from Revver - american Videos July 21, 2008
Author: QIP1 Added: Mon, 21 Jul 2008 11:55:04 -0800 Duration: 51Exclusively Yours is an intriguing relic from 1950's American business. When Texaco developed a new additive for their high octane gasoline, called Petrox, they commissioned this film in order to serve as training videos for their salesmen on its benefits, painting it as the best gas additive on the market. It remains now as a fascinating review of what new product launches were like in the 1950s. The film appeared at the 1954 annual meeting of salesmen, and it shows all the new advertising surrounding the launch of this product. Very good footage of a cutaway engine, as well as animation, illustrates how the new gas additive affects a car engine. Old Texaco print ads and vintage billboards douse the film with an enjoyably retro feel. Exclusively Yours is a great look at gas station history in America.
