From : Broca's Area
Good day, and welcome to our regularly scheduled podcst about Greece. This one was like the Italy one really, were to begin, where to stop. Well we began of course with the ancients, and Isabelle began by talking about Greek tragedy. Well those Greeks were certainly tragic, I mean really tragic. People say TV is sensationalist, check out some old plays if you want real sensationalism, then Jon woke up.... Isabelle talked some about Herodotus, a Greek historian, generally regarded as the father of modern history, well the study of it anyway, the Jon woke up. Then we talked about the importance of Greek philosophy, then Jon woke up.... Eventually Dave talked a bit about the conflict between Greece and Turkey over Cyprus, and a bit about Greek food. Then Maddie called on the phone... In the end we had to pull the plug, though we did enjoy this one a lot. I hope the volume levels are a bit better this time. Thanks to Rachel and AmHam for twittering us throughout the recording. Greece is ranked 46th by the International Ice Hockey Federation. Then Jon woke up... Next time it is off to Algeria! Then Jon woke up.

From : Metacafe - Today's Videos by Metacafe
to Make you own Videos for You Tube etc. JFK Gives us all the low down on secret societies, who he say were trying ot take over governments across the world. Did this problem ever get solved, or was he assasinated before he got round to doing anything about it ? Certainly there were rumours at the time, that he might close down the CIA or FBI, or even both, in favour of more open, and controlable government agencies.

 From : Electric Politics Podcast
From time immemorial politicians have promised the moon. Some delivered. My natural inclination regarding Barack Obama is to be skeptical and cautious because he hasn't yet really been tested. On the other hand, he's shown a remarkable ability to bring people together and he tends to say the right thing in the right way at the right time. See, for example, his great speech yesterday in Berlin. Moreover, people whose judgment about people is better than mine tend to trust him. To kick around some perceptions of Obama and talk politics generally I went Midwest, in a conversation with Dr. Bud McClure, a psychologist at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. This one is quite unstructured and laid back, and I much enjoyed it. Thanks, Bud! Total runtime an hour and seven minutes.

From : APM: Garrison Keillor's The Writer's Almanac Podcast feed
Friday's Poem: : "From the Garden" by Anne Sexton from The Complete Poems. Friday's Literary Notes: It's the 30th birthday of the world's first baby conceived by in vitro fertilization, Louise Brown, born in Oldham, England (1978). Her parents had been trying to conceive for nine years. A doctor told Lesley Brown, the future mother of Louise, that she had a blocked fallopian tube and referred her to Dr. Patrick Steptoe, who had been conducting research on fertilization for many years. The Browns decided that they would have Dr. Steptoe harvest an egg from Lesley's ovary, which would then be fertilized with her husband's sperm in a laboratory. Dr. Edwards would perform this fertilization in vitro (from Latin, literally "in glass" coined in reference to the test tube in which experiments were performed). A few days later, Dr. Steptoe would transfer the newly formed embryo back into the uterus of Lesley Brown...

From : podictionary - for word lovers - daily stories, trivia & dictionary etymology
Today s podictionary word brought to you by GoToMeeting. Try it free for 30 days by following the link www.gotomeeting.com/podcast I sometimes say that a common human experience breeds a word that is common across cultures and changes little over time. There isn t much in the world that s more common to human experience than having a mother, nor anything that means quite as much to most people. So it should come as no surprise that this word has come down to us almost unchanged for as far back as we can see into the history of words. And also that it is one of the words that spans the entire width and breadth of Indo-European languages. Evidently we only started writing the TH in mother back in the early 1500s but may have been pronouncing it that way for some time beforehand. The Indo-European root was mater. Not too different for five to seven thousand years. Also, languages from Latin to Gaelic, and Greek to Russian share this maternal legacy. This is a word we not only all have in common, it is also a word we all use with great regularity. Words like that just can t change because there are too many people around who know the word and will correct you if you start to pronounce it wrong or use it with a meaning that is just too far from their understanding of what it should mean. So again it is no surprise that we didn t get mother from Latin or French, but from the oldest Old English. I mentioned Sir Robert Cotton yesterday in my episode on the word mildew at the Oxford University Press blog. While the meaning of mildew has changed a lot, the word mother has its first citation in the same document set I mentioned yesterday from Sir Robert s library. The Cotton Library is an important resource for people studying Old English. Unfortunately back in 1731almost a quarter of the ancient collection went up in smoke. The documents had been brought together around the time of Shakespeare by Sir Robert Cotton and then had been moved in the early 1700s to the ironically named Ashburnham House. The librarian was understandably an enthusiast when it came to ancient documents and he had quite a pile of them in his own house nearby when tragedy struck. In the dead of night his house burned down and destroyed numerous irreplaceable old manuscripts. An eyewitness—the headmaster of the school where this all took place—reported the panic stricken librarian stumbling out through the smoke in his nightshirt with bundles of old documents tucked under his arms.
