The alpha male killed an adult male in thick bush and called the family to the kill. The pups immediately dominated the carcass. Once well fed Puzzles tried to get in for her share but the pups kept her away, even though their tummies were way beyond bulging. Puzzles kept tormenting them hoping to get them away from the carcass. Eventually she gets to feed in peace with still plenty of food remaining.

Hmmmmm……….. Sunday, a day of leisure and chilling out? Not quite. The dogs don’t take Sundays off so how can I? Even so they were off to a slow start this morning and ended up at Khayeni pan for a quick drink, until the alpha male spotted some impala in the distance. The pups noticed his stare but couldn’t see the impala. Instead they saw a lone wildebeest bull standing much closer. Thinking this to be the target dad had acquired, they took over the hunt but soon came up short when the bull didn’t run or even pay them the slightest bit of attention. Then they turned their attention to some zebra close by and it seemed to be working when one turned and walked away from them. But only briefly, and then confronted them. This hunting thing just wasn’t working for them. The animals are supposed to run away. Actually I wonder what the dogs would do if an impala stood it’s ground against them? It might just get away with it. Then in the background impala were suddenly running with the Puzzles and the male after them. The pups started to chase but soon gave up when the adults and impala disappeared in the distance. They now had to wait for their return. But in the meantime the zebra had decided to check out the pups. Not quite what they’d planned or wanted. The pups moved off. Shortly Puzzles returned and rested up with the pups. About 10minutes later the male returned and the pups took off to beg from him. He’d killed and regurgitated for them, then rested up. Why didn’t he take them to his kill? Anyway all still looked fairly well fed and the pups were now quite happy to play. Soon temperatures warmed up sending the pack into the shade to rest for the day. In the late afternoon, before the dogs even got active, the vultures were landing in trees around them waiting to join them on the hunt. The pack only got active after sunset and I left them as it got dark, still on the hunt. The moon is over half, so no doubt they’ll hunt into the night. adventure, africa, african, african birds, animal, animal kingdom, animals, birding, birding african birds, birds, blog, blogumentary, bush, bush knowledge, conservation, documentary, dog, ecotraining, education, endangered species, experience, experience adventure, film, filmmaker, flickr, GLTP, gonarezhou, Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, hunting, impala, IUCN Red List, kill, malilangwe, mashable, narrowcasting, nature, Open Content Alliance, pamushana, peace parks, photo, photos, podcasting, predators, puppy, teach, video, vultures, wild dogs, wildcast, wildcasting, wilderness, wildlife, wildlife documentary, youtube, zimbabwe

The Alpha male has his sights on impala in the distance, but the pups think he's after the wildebeest bull that's much closer. The wild dog pups take over the hunt but soon realise the bull is a non starter. They change their attention to some zebra but again the prey doesn't run, which puzzles them. In the distance the adults chase after some impala but the pups are too young to keep up and wait for their return. In the meantime the zebra advance on the pups. Not quite what they'd planned.

The wild dog pack were still all curled up sleeping when I arrived this morning in the cool overcast dawn. But typically when I arrive they wake up and then it's time for the pups to play. Today they didn't play for long and the cool weather soon found them all snuggled up sleeping again.

After their kill this morning the wild dogs went straight to Khayeni pan to drink. But again for the pups they were up against this water monster. They just aren't getting used to it. Nervously they approach the 'monster' and gingerly they drink all egging each other on to be the first. Only to jump away for the slightest reason.

It's dawn and the wild dog pups are all wound up with energy chasing each other all over the place. And when that gets a bit boring, or probably one pup's wanting more attention, it collapses in the grass and is soon abused by the others.

The wild dogs are lean and after a massive chase came up empty handed. Exhausted they took a break and were visited by a young giraffe. Then it was back to the pups in a hurry. Seeing mom and dad returning the pups ran to meet up with them hoping for a meal, but it was a false alarm. Time to chill out.

Arriving, I woke the wild dog pups at dawn and they just had to come and say hello or just satisfy their curiousity. Having reached their trust threshold, it was then time to tuck into some fresh impala faecal berries. They sure looked yummy. Finished with those hors d'oeuvres it was then time to tackle a rather frustrating tree stump.

They're already tucking into their 2nd kill, as the adult wild dogs use each other to pull against to rip the carcass. The pups with bulging tummies aren't too eager to push their luck in taking over the carcass. But eventually as they slowly smother the carcass and with gentle whines, mom and dad move off leaving them to it.

Mama Notch was enjoying her mud bath until her little calf arrived. With a headshake she showed her displeasure and he seemed a little sheepish. But not wanting to show any emotions he tucks into an unsuspecting clump of sedge grass. Then it's drinking time with mom and having recovered his cocky confidence he leads the way.

Terrapins basking in the sun soon find their peace and quiet being disturbed by a busy little Sandpiper. The Sandpiper's after little insects that flock to the wet smelly terrapin, the terrapin not being too sure whether he's going to get a nip on the backside. Then the sandpiper has the audacity to ride the terrapin.

While the elephant bulls chilled out swimming the Spoonbills, Yellow-billed Storks and Hammerkops took advantage of their disturbance to fish along the shore lines. As small as the Hammerkop is the bull just couldn't pluck up enough courage to chase him off. Eventually they called a truce.

They came testing the wind. Happy with what they found they advanced on Sosigi dam. The giants walked with confidence in their slow motion way. In single file they came, but soon broke ranks as they moved in on the water.

Wild dog pups discover waterWild dog pups discover water
from Wildcast
September 28, 2008

Wild dog pups discovered water for the first time 24hours ago. But now they're going through the whole discovery process again. What is this water monster? Does it bite? They're nervous to approach it, jumping back with just the slightest provocation. They dig at the moist soil and then eventually one starts to lap. Suddenly all are brave and lapping at the water for the second time in their lives.
