Aero-TV Checks Out Avidyne's Latest: The IFD800 and PFD4000
from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) August 18, 2008
Compact 8" PFD4000 Joins Massive 15" Systems From Avidyne -- With Synthetic Vision! It's been an interesting year for a renewed and reinvigorated Avidyne. Avidyne Corporation had a message for pilots, manufacturers, and the general aviation industry as a whole, at AirVenture 2008: the company's back, and anyone who had written them off should take notice. After ceding much of the GA glass panel market -- a market pretty much Avidyne created, with its Envision flight deck -- to rival Garmin, Avidyne knew it had to offer a knockout punch in order to stand any chance of regaining market share. The avionics manufacturer has done it by combining Synthetic Vision (SVS) and Enhanced Vision (EVS) with large-format 15-inch Integrated Flight Displays (IFDs). Avidyne says its Entegra SVS offers improvements over existing systems by depicting 3D terrain all the way out to the horizon, based on the aircraft's altitude above the ground. The Avidyne system also depicts obstacles, traffic and "Highway-in-the-Sky" (HITS) boxes on the PFD, enhancing the utility of the airplane, improving the comfort level of passengers, and increasing the safety of each flight. As demonstrated on Avidyne's massive new 15" IFD8000 PFDs, the company builds on that capability by offering Entegra EVS enhanced vision, using a Max-Viz EVS-100 infrared camera. EVS is designed to turn night into day, enabling pilots to see up to ten times further in marginal VFR conditions through most atmospheric obscurations. With SVS and EVS, pilots can now fly comfortably at night, enjoying clear views of the ground, seeing emergency landing fields, roads, lakes, and buildings. Avidyne also introduced the Entegra PFD4000, a new compact, 8-inch primary flight display system, at AirVenture 2008. The panel is designed to fit virtually any general aviation aircraft, adding the enhanced situational awareness and reliability of an all-glass flight deck. The PFD4000 is designed as a "6-pack" replacement that will fit in virtually any panel space and offers traditional primary flight instrumentation, including support for autopilot and flight director as well as altitude pre-select, vertical speed select and heading select modes. Just like the Entegra EXP5000, it's bigger brother, the PFD4000 has a wide-format artificial horizon, intuitive trend tapes for altitude, airspeed, and vertical speed, a full horizontal situation indicator (HSI) with moving map presentation of flight plan data and an RMI/Bearing pointer overlay, as well as a full-time wind vector -- all within the pilot's primary field of view. The PFD4000 also offers one-button access to frequent pilot settings such as altitude, vertical speed, and heading, as well as a dedicated BARO knob, make it easy to use. It is designed to have a learning curve of less than five minutes. Avidyne says the PFD4000 will be "competitively" priced, and available sometime in 2009. Quartz Mountain Re-Intro's The Luscombe 11E On Aero-TV
from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) August 17, 2008
All Things Old May Be New Again? Its been a long tough road for the folks of Quartz Mountain Aerospace in their quest to bring a fabled airframe back to life. Following years of sometimes-choppy operations, a small Altus, OK-based planemaker might finally be heading for smoother skies. Quartz Mountain Aerospace recently earned a significant milestone on its way towards having its name associated with the likes of Cessna, or Mooney: the company earned its first airworthiness certificate from the FAA. Aero-TV caught up with QMA at the 2008 AOPA Fly-In to see an example of their handiwork. Formerly known as Luscombe Aircraft Corp., the company says the Model 11E -- which will be used primarily as a trainer -- is an adaptation of the Luscombe Model 11A Sedan, introduced in 1946. The new model is distinguished by superior in-flight and landing stability over the tailwheel-equipped Sedan. Like with innumerable other upstart planemakers, QMA's trip to this point hasn't been an easy one. As ANN reported in June 2007, Quartz Mountain attributed the need for layoffs (since rescinded) to delays in FAA inspections related to earning production certification, and various parts, training, and supply issues. With the ability to now produce sell its Luscombe 11E en masse, Quartz Mountain's 110,000-square-foot work floor -- eerily quiet just a year ago -- is now filled with the noises of a busy production facility. Quartz Mountain has also taken recent steps to show it's serious about playing in the big leagues. As ANN reported last April, QMA announced it will be the first to offer Garmin's G950 glass-panel avionics suite. Let's Take A Look At A NEW Classic, The Luscombe 11E, With Aero-TV FMI: www.qmaero.com Copyright 2008, Aero-News Network, Inc., ALL Rights Reserved.

Aero-TV: Quite The Type-Rating... Checking Out In The DC-3
from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) August 11, 2008
Get Checked Out In Dan Gryder's Herpa DC-3 Recently, we talked to Dan Gryder... who may just be the luckiest guy in aviation... as he gets paid to fly a spotless, pristinely-maintained Douglas DC-3 throughout the country, and even offers interested pilots the chance to earn the ONLY DC-3 type rating available today. ANN's Paul Plack talked with Dan about that process, what it takes and how YOU might be able to join the few who can proudly point to the DC-3 type-rating on their pilot certificates. When Dan Gryder isn't flying passengers around the world in 757s and 767s for a major airline, he can be found providing DC-3 flight instruction at his training center or shaking hands and offering DC-3 tours at air shows. He has over 11,000 flight hours and type ratings in numerous large aircraft. He's been a flight instructor for more than 25 years and holds the FAA designations of GOLD SEAL CFI, CFII, MEI, ATP and AGI. Dan and his team of DC-3 experts operate what appears to be the only remaining DC-3 flight training schools, based near Atlanta. If you're looking for more than just an introductory lesson or two, Dan and his team provide complete pilot in command and second in command training -- all the way through the actual type rating. The 'Gooney' is no stranger to World War II veterans and historians who will remember the DC-3 as the C-47 Skytrain. The military version of this remarkable flying machine aircraft was used by Allied Forces to transport troops and supplies around the world. The plane was nicknamed "the Gooney Bird" as it swiftly earned a rep as a sturdy (even forgiving) and reliable workhorse -- capable of flying nearly anywhere in almost any weather. The US Navy referred to a modified version of the plane as the R4D and the British called her the Dakota. Still others called her the Skytrooper. No matter what you call her, she's a piece of aviation history to be treasured. Aero-TV: Rotorway Talks 'Next-Gen' Helos
from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) August 10, 2008
The Talon 600 Is The First Of A New Generation For Rotorway Last year at AirVenture 2007, Rotorway proudly displayed its newest aircraft, the A600 Talon. Successor to the well-known Exec 162F, the A600 looks almost identical... but Rotorway CEO Grant Norwitz is quick to point out beneath the aircraft's skin is an entirely new aircraft. Building upon Rotorway's experience in the kit helicopter world -- which Norwitz feels is due to B.J. Schram's efforts in creating the first Rotorway -- the company has incorporated many design changes planned to ease its transition into building a certified ship. The A600 Talon is not an incremental change in Rotorway's aircraft, though the exterior remains much the same. Conventional steam gauges have been removed and replaced with a Stratomaster Enigma glass cockpit incorporating an HSI, CDI, TAWS, and GPS. A FADEC control system, which Rotorway helped revolutionize in previous helicopters, now has a controller displaying every aspect of the system on the glass cockpit. The Talon is wider and taller than the Exec 162F it replaces, and a buyer can choose the conventional belt-driven tail rotor or a new design that incorporates a tailshaft assembly. Two power plants are available for the new helicopter: a Rotorway 600N at 147 horsepower, and a Rotorway 600S, which is supercharged and ups horsepower to 167. The two-seat helicopter will have a useful load of 535 pounds, and a cruise speed of 100 miles per hour. Rotorway has also designed a brand new belt-driven system with a hydraulic tensioner to get the rotors turning. Rotorway has been testing the prototype since January, and the current A600 has flown for 180 hours. As Norwitz says, "we want to make sure we have a product that we want to fly." The A600 is aimed at the training market as well, and Rotorway plans to have the aircraft tested in the training environment at a Rotorway facility in South Africa. The helicopter comes with full dual controls and stability is reportedly similar to a Schweizer. But what does the A600 cost? With everything but the radio and transponder, the A600 kit will retail for $95,700. Another option is to buy the aircraft ready to fly, or "turn key," for $135,000, though this will not be the certified cost. Estimates are that the cost of a certified A600 will be somewhere in the $150,000 range. Join Aero-TV As We Check Out The Latest Helos From Rotorway!
