East 1st Street and Bowery, June 13 2008-- East Villagers vociferously protest the gentrification of the neighborhood, the so-called "redefined" Bowery (developer terminology), the proliferation of wine bars such as the one owned by Bruce Willis, sterile glass architecture typified by Avalon Chrystie Place, and rampant residential and small business evictions. The protest march continued past the former CBGBs, the Bowery Hotel, to 47 East 3rd street where a landlord couple invoked eminent domain to evict a large number of tenants and reclaim the entire building for themselves (see earlier post on this bldg on this blog), then across Tompkins Square where a French film was being shown by the Parks Dept and the French Film Office (for free) past Bill Castro who scuttled away at the sight of the protesters and on to the Christadora building.

Robert Schneider’s revival of the much-acclaimed Dirt was surprisingly dusty in its efforts to portray the plight of an illegal immigrant from Iraq, desperately trying to make a go of it in the big city peddling roses. Sad, our solo character appears to wallow in self-pity and self-loathing while diminishing his last vestiges of self-respect through an unyielding envy for the culture, the literature and accomplishments of a country that rejects his very existence

Hey NYC theatergoers, looking for something drastically theatrically different this weekend? Perhaps some European theater wrapped in a circus like atmosphere, with a splash of fairy tales from the old country? How about if we could suggest a comedic dramatic production of Pinocchio produced via a hidden dark metaphoric enigmatic driven plot that will keep you riveted throughout the play and engaged in conversation for the rest of your evening?
