Some easy driving around the back-country roads outside Las Vegas, Nevada. We just got this new POV Camera for work, so needless to say, I grabbed it right away to take it for a run. I really like it! Each camera angle took less than 5 minutes to set up, and this was filmed on the default quality setting: 640x480. This is a 1600-2/68 that has been married to a M5 E34 rear trailing arms and differential. Roll cage, gear box from a 728-78 (Getrag 262), a M10B20 that has been moved back a lot, classic VW/Mahle 90.5 pistons, Schrick 328/316 cam, 200 mm Kennedy VW clutch with a 3 puck sintered disc. Custom intake with flared end runners and a BMW V8 80 mm throttlebody. Custom exhaust manifold with two separate 40 mm wastegates and a Holset HX55 turbo. VEMS engine management. MSD 6A CDI box, soon DIS-4. Aeromotive FPR, 4x Ford 1600 cc/min injectors and 3 fuel pumps for the E85 fuel. During the dyno session we experienced misfires at 7000 rpm and 1.95 bar, but still got 552 whp and about 560 Nm at that point. The engine wants to rev past 8000 rpm at lower boost. We will fix the ignition system, add some boost control (none in the video), and then return for more! Recorded in northern Sweden. The article linked in tonight s show notes speaks of the ability to turn any organic material into ethanol, with a focus upon corn (the non-grain components) and various forms of cellulose. I think some skepticism is in order. One of the details released is that, before the magic bacteria go to work, the cellulose material is gasified. How that exactly happens - without the addition of energy in the form of heat - is left as an exercise for the reader. Last that I know of, generation of heat by combustion of almost anything is going to produce carbon dioxide as some of the more pleasant by products. While the bacteria are happily munching away producing ethanol, what s keeping them warm ? Just the sort of question that you might want to ask on a January night in the Midwest. I want to believe, but many have unsuccessfully pursued the free lunch, and this story has that aroma.
