Judith Hall makes her debut for the brand new "Northern Soul 2008" album with the fabulous "Out Of The Picture", which my dear old friend and mentor David Nathan has singled out to champion. But this time I have never been more artistically satisfied. Everything about this wonderful new song suggests the magic and energy of the era that I fell in love with as a teenager. Forget the purists - this one has it all. If you can keep your feet still while listening to this, then you must be a country and western fan or something. My protege, Tahira Jumah, returns to the brand new "Northern Soul 2008" album with two tracks, the fabulous "World Of Your Own", and this bonus track, "Mister Right". I first cut this song with Frances Nero in 1991. It was to be the follow-up to "Footsteps Following Me", and I co-wrote it with my wonderful friend, the late great Edwin Starr, and he sang the backing vocals on it, which you can still hear on this new version. In the end we didn't release it as a single, but I always thought the song was better than the arrangement, so in 2006 I re-wrote all the chords and restructured it and it became a bit of an anthem off the compilation album "Solid Ground". Of course there was never a video, so I decided to redo it with my number one protege, Tahira Jumah, the fabulous diva who is my Evelyn Thomas for the new millenium. When I first met her, when she came to the studio with Fay Jones, they were both friends of Angelo Starr, and he brought them along to meet me. I decided to pair them up to make a song which I wrote with Angelo, "It's An Ill Wind". They had never met each other before that day. But as I got to know Tahira, I realised she had all the attributes of a real Ian Levine long term star, which is why she then sang my very first song ever, "Reaching For The Best", for my last album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow". And also, "It's An Ill Wind" has now firmly become one of my two favourite tracks off "Disco 2008", and, along with the Odette Adams track, these two ended up being the real sleepers of the whole bunch. Tahira is FABULOUS. I just want the privilege of introducing her to the world. The album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow" was released on March 3rd on Centre City Records, and we did another duet for it of Tahira and Fay, a remake of the Carol Woods hit, "I'm In Wonderland". Laverta Lewis makes her debut for the brand new "Northern Soul 2008" album with the utterly fabulous "Starry Eyed". Well it's not exactly a debut as such, more like a reunion after twenty two years. Laverta Lewis (real name Debra Brown) recorded with me back in 1986 as the lead singer of the group Dark Secret on the track "Liar Liar Liar", when they were signed to MCA Records - and here she is again with a mid-tempo groover, sounding like a true mid-70s Blackpool Mecca floorfiller with a fine string arrangement. Laverta comes from California and moved over to England in the mid 1980s together with husband Milton Brown. I met Milton through Laverta, and recorded two singles on him in 1986 and 1987 for the Nightmare label. Twenty one tears later we're all reunited. In the interim period, Milton had visited his home in Norfolk Virginia, only to find himself denied re-entry to be back with his wife and kids, a problem that took a long period to sort out, but all's well that ends well, and both husband and wife are back singing with Centre City Records. Coming in October 2008, a tremendously exciting project for Northern Soul fans everywhere. We've done a deal with Wienerworld, a major music DVD company, and the same company who originally released our classic documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul", and we are now doing the definitive DVD box set. A five disc set of 200 performances called "Northern Soul's Greatest 200 Floorfillers". This uses some songs from "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" which are completely re-edited, so they look fresh and sparkling new. All the previous video effects done in the 1990s are gone forever, consigned to history. Plus loads and loads of never before seen videos, many of which have sat in the can untouched for many many years. Plus some newly recorded tributes to the classics. If you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is the must-have purchase of the year. This is the legendary and beautiful Evelyn Thomas singing "Doomsday", her second release which was recorded in the summer of 1975 in Chicago, and released in 1976. I discovered Evelyn while holding auditions in 1975 in Chicago, arranged by Danny Leake, who I'd met the year before, in England, with his group, 100% Pure Poison. In February 1976, Evelyn's first record, "Weak Spot" and a song by a young Chicago postman, L.J. Johnson, both charted in the same week, and both acts were flown over to appear on Top Of The Pops, both on the same show. The entire music business was flummoxed as to how two completely unknown young black singers from Chicago, who had never even recorded before, both had hits on entirely different labels in the same week as each other. Evelyn's second release, "Doomday" also hit the charts, debuting its first week at number 41, which in those days was a fair sized hit. It was a further eight years before Evelyn went on to record her classic, the seven million selling "High Energy" My biggest ever hit, made in 1984 for Record Shack Records, which sold seven million worldwide. How they ever went bust after that is a mystery, but I stepped in and rescued the whole catalogue from the liquidator. Evelyn and I recently teamed up again for the first time in twenty long years, and we also filmed some classics, including this Northern Soul smash, which has never had a video for the past thirty two years, till now. Not my favourite remake of one of my old songs, not by any means, but several people have asked for this to be on YouTube so your wish is my command. Cathy Marie Edgar remakes my 1976 Disco classic, originally sung so wonderfully by Barbara Pennington, called "Twenty Four Hours A Day", which came out on United Artists Records in 1976, and topped the Billboard US Disco charts for seven weeks in 1977. Truthfully, there is no-one who could sing this song like Barbara Pennington did, so maybe remaking it was not a wise idea. Cathy does her best, and she was another artist found by Tahira Jumah. This was a bonus track for my iconic album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow", which is probably the most dear to my heart project that I have ever undertaken. I decided after thirty three years since I made my very first record, "Reaching For The Best" by The Exciters, to take a trip back down memory lane and recut thirty of my classics on artists who I am currently working with, reinterpreting them in 2008 without losing the magic that made them special in the first place. It's a totally self indulgent project, but one which already has my fans salivating with delight. I first got the idea when I recut Evelyn Thomas's wonderful classic "Have A Little Faith In Me" with Ebony Alleyne, last year. So I'm doing thirty in total, twenty four for the CD and six more extra ones for the DVD, picking either my biggest hits, my most beloved tracks, or the songs which people most requested to see a video. As I must clearly explain, these are not the original versions. And that's what makes the project exciting and new.These are brand spanking new interpretaions of the classics, by Centre City's current roster of artists , built up over a thirty three year career of making records.
