Ravenelle has a new blog!Ravenelle has a new blog!
from Torley Lives
September 21, 2008

Appropriately, Ravenelle.net! She labored on it for a stretch of several days and I was there to help as-needed. All those SEO ve been doing for my own pursuits sure came in handy. Fresh, in addition to her announcement, she s got a post on why she hates the default plumeria in Second Life. I encourage her to be bold about her opinions! Photo by Ravenelle Earlier, I suggested Ravie should be more avatar-centric: she now has 4 of her characters decorating her masthead banner, and I think that s great. They re named (from L-R) Femsecta (the insectoid alien), Ducky (elegant swan mask), Ravicat (big red bow on kitten head), and Blossom (floral puker). Since I m so enthralled with myths modern and ancient, I hope she ll share more about her characters soon. I m especially thrilled that Ravie discovered this blog theme on her own: around the time I was upgrading my blog theme (it s only been a week), we trawled through many WordPress Premium Themes. I ll make a point that you re not just paying for the product, you re paying for the service — so look for a thriving user community and a responsive theme author. Otherwise, you re stuck in the mud, as I learned before when I used the free Tiga theme. It was pretty good, but the creator kind of abandoned it and went quiet. Anyway, Brian Gardner s Revolution theme has support in spades, and there s even a Showcase for modded versions. I hope Jason Schuller of On Demand fame (my theme) does this too, because he has a lot to be proud of. Another observation: I haven t seen enough Second Life blogs with un-blog themes, meaning, CMS designs more suited for a news/magazine layout or videos (as I m doing). If you have suggestions, hit me up, because there s still an oddly wide gap between social media stylings elsewhere and SL. And no shortage of creativity to be plundered. To be specific: look at John Chow s blog and wonder why a make money in SL blog with that finesse hasn t been done yet? It s an awfully big hole to fill. (I d be tempted to start one up if it weren t such a conflict of interest with my employment @ LL!) Towards those ends, I ve got high praise for Joan Kremer s blog, WRITERS IN THE (virtual) SKY. Like my wife s choice, it s an inspiring example many SL bloggers could and should learn from. Joan aka Alas Zerbino s blog design wraps around her content well, and her posts are effectively founded on trusty blogging tropes (e.g., lists and how-tos). For SL blogs, that s RARE! She s even got a Lijit Search going on — and if you re in the know, then you know that s a premier way of analyzing your search stats. (I ve rec ed Lijit to Ravie, and will try reinstalling it on Torley Lives after the nice Lijit folks — thx Daniel Weiss — send me an updated plugin that should fix a bug I was having.) Live, ongoing examples are powerful: have a look at Ravenelle s Featured Content block towards the upper left and how that auto-updates. It s not eye-boggling animation, but at the same time, the automatic motion draws me in. I m not a fan of purposeless glossy effects, but when used to enhance the smoothness of an immersive experience, I give the +1. Also, for the time being, Ravie s sidebar ad-block features Blossom, which I think is a fun touch. I have this compulsion for fake ads, and Blossom should puke more One of the most wonderful things about my relationship with Ravie is how we exchange ideas throughout the day and do great things with them. It keeps going, and continues from one day to the next. It s like sparks and creativity of varying magnitudes are continually shooting off, and our discussions have informed + entertained the next steps we make. She s incredibly supportive and nurturing, and I dearly look forward to seeing her keep busy with blogging. Go check out ravenelle.net and let her know what you think — congrats, honey! I m proud of you. 3
Which video-sharing site should you use? A quick conclusionWhich video-sharing site should you use? A quick conclusion
from Torley Lives
September 18, 2008

I ve used almost every video-sharing site out there. I m happy that s not an exaggeration, because my many hours spent can save you time — above all, combine my trusted experience with your best judgment. The following is subject to change as certain services get better (and others become worse, I m sure), but it ll hopefully be a great convenience. Without further ado Big picture tools TubeMogul Not a video-sharing site in itself, this is a highly useful utility which uploads to over a dozen of the most popular sites (they don t do Flickr and are having site issues with Vimeo right now). Another plus: stats tracking. I use it regularly, it saves me a lot of trouble. Also a pragmatic way to become better informed by examining video quality uploaded to multiple sites. Free accounts get 150 deployments/month, e.g., uploading 2 video to 4 sites each counts as 8 deployments. My advice is to check the numbers and see where you re getting (or growing) the most views, and focus on those. VodPod A meta-video-sharing site. You setup a pod and collect videos from just about any other video site, including those listed below. Main benefit for me is ease of organizing and adding tags and descriptions atop what other sites give you. Perhaps generally more useful for passionate viewers than video creators themselves, yet I m both. Extremely helpful guys run this (a core team of Lindens, including me, are currently working with them on a project). Use this if you find your online video collection too scattered, and see what I m doing with it. Best-to-worst quality Vimeo Very high quality, higher in most cases than blip.tv (and it supports HD). Extremely elegant site design, Web 2.0-slick. Limits you to 500 MB/week (premium accounts are supposedly coming soon) and no batch uploader. But like me, you can open multiple tabs in your web browser and upload several videos at once. (Not as good, but it works.). The best thumbnail-picker (lots of choices, a snap to use). What s missing? Not raw gameplay footage-friendly (see their policy and forum threads). blip.tv My current preference for uploading Second Life video tutorials (I m swaying towards Vimeo but lack of batching holds me back). Great quality, very crisp text at small sizes. Sound is a bit swishy. UpperBlip batch uploader is rudimentary but functional, better than YT s. Support is helpful, tho I ve gotten mixed responsiveness (sometimes it s superb, other times ). blip.tv s search isn t as good as YouTube, and you can t restrict searches to your own videos. Has the most extensive player customization I ve seen yet, but Vimeo s UI is more intuitive. Flickr Very convenient if you already use it for photo-sharing. Videos are easy to tag and search, per Flickr tradition. Quality is better than YouTube but falls behind blip.tv and Vimeo, with noticeable visual blockiness for fast-motion clips. Audio has annoying swishy artifacts. Uploads are often unreliable, failing mysteriously — but uploading the same file several seconds later will work. Biggest downside? Videos can only be almost-90 seconds long. I say almost because they do truncate a bit off the end. Overall, not bad. But not great either. YouTube The most popular by far. If you want plenty of views and exposure amidst the slings and arrows of spam and dumbass comments, there s no alternative. Quality stinks compared to others (visuals are pixelated and sound is mono), and high-quality mode is only available for (1) certain videos (it doesn t tell you why) and (2) doesn t work for embedded videos offsite. Which effectively cripples its broad usefulness. Support sucks and the forum users are more helpful than the cluelessness of official staff. Has batch uploader, but it s kind of buggy, and right now, my connections are timing out. One special positive: you can skip ahead in its video player without waiting for the progress bar to buffer beforehand. Wish others had this feature. Others WeGame In a category of its own. Unlike blip.tv and Vimeo, WeGame is friendly towards and all about gaming videos. Site is simple to use and they have numerous sections, including a Second Life one. Big draw: they created their own game recorder program which is cheap (free) and cheerful (simplest way to record and upload I ve seen yet). Quality is decent and you can also link to your YouTube videos. And There are many more specialized video-sharing sites arising, and the ones that hope to stand out most emphasize a unique twist, whether it s advertising submission length as a strength, or focusing on how-tos (OneMinuteU and 5min fulfill both). Beyond this, the appeal of some sites is not just in showing off your video, but joining a community of likeminded people. Quality shoot-out Videos are worth a few 1,000 words, at least — here s the same clip, as featured in Getting a Second Life Just Got Easier with Direct SLurl , uploaded to 3 sites. Vimeo blip.tv YouTube You know which I like best. What s your fave? Conclusion Short story of the brief roundup: go with TubeMogul to spread your video shrapnel, add VodPod if you re a rabid viewer who wants to keep tabs across multiple sites, and learn firsthand what the others contribute to your multimedia life online. As Bruce Lee said: Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless, and add what is uniquely your own. Context: I mainly upload Second Life video tutorials and machinima, with a smattering of some real life stuff too. My videos often include hyperkinetic motion, lots of colors, and humor.

from Maximus Productions aka Max Fowler, the same badass remixer who reworked my piano performance of Strayless ! OH, DREAMS COME TRUE! This time, he took Gymo (not Gyno , you perv), in itself a nod to Erik Satie (who influenced some of Sakamoto s Impressionist piano colorings like BTTB), and stuttered it up, added simple beeps, and soft background percussion. What s really kewl is this is a followup, after I recommended he check out Noto + Sakamoto, and taking my words to heart, came up with this, which you can DOWNLOAD: Download audio file (12121) Here s my original, which you can also DOWNLOAD as part of solo piano 7: Download audio file (Torley-021-Gymo.mp3) It s deliciously glitchy with a time-treasured blend of clicks + cuts — on the experimental side without descending into DSP wonkery sadness — and I m honored! ROCK ON, MAXIMUS! Have you done a remix of my music? Let me know… I may very well have to tell the world about it!

Torley myths debunked!Torley myths debunked!
from Torley Lives
August 28, 2008

It s time to debunk the mindjunk and chop the slop about me! Torley paints a happy spin/fluff on everything What kind of crap is this? This criticism is functionally useless. And you now have a choice of how you want to hear me: Normal Torley Download audio file (crap.mp3) Not-Normal Torley Download audio file (crap2.mp3) To put it more diplomatically: read back through my blog posts (both personal ll see 1,000s of times when I not only acknowledged problems (from little UI bugs to critical crashes/content loss), but actioned them onwards. After you ve read all that, or even an ample portion and made the connections, then you have a solid base to work from. But people who go, Torley s just in lala rose-tinted neon land! would benefit from doing research. This isn t a SL problem. It s a human problem which speaks more about the person saying it than me. (E.g., someone has a problem with being happy, or is intensely suspicious of exuberant enthusiasm and wrongly perceives it as being fake .) And it s often paired with passive-aggressive behavior, because I hardly ever get those questions sent to me personally; they tend to be scattered comments on blogs and whatnot, where I m unlikely to see them. Simple: if you have a genuine concern I can help with and want to collaborate on advancing it, contact me directly. Ask questions, don t make unfounded assumptions, and it s likely we ll do great things together. Furthermore, when stuff bothers me, I bring it up. How about this old post from 2005? No, it isn t hard to find my complaints. What you won t find is irresponsible venting and Idiocracy-like behavior from me, and that, you ll agree, is a fine thang. The world has enough problems and we don t need more. Yet I understand if my overwhelming positivity blinds that: humans only have so much sensory bandwidth to go around, and we all have filters (excellent article by Dustin Wax, read it). I may make a post on why the human race are horrible communicators, from the perspective of hypothetical aliens. But we do the best we can. Yes, being me, I m bound to express things uniquely. Torley is crazy Crazy about Second Life? Yes! There was a time when I was very depressed. This was 2003, when my Dad died, and due to other self-esteem and personal struggles at the time. No kidding. Unthinkable now, but that was my day-to-day existence. On top of that, I also was afflicted with hyperacusis, and ended my career as an electronic music producer. As the story goes (as told in past blog posts), I read transhumanist and cyberpunk literature. Got interested in the future. Found out about Second Life. Met Lindens inworld, too wow, they re nice! From late 2004 onwards — discovered myself and re-discovered hope in SL, made many friends. Got a job at Linden Lab, found love (we re living together in first life now). Continue to get joy from helping my fellow Resis. Very much living the dream but more adversity to conquer and dreams to come. So, with that backstory, it makes sense why I m so happy and emotionally secure now. Both on and off the job, I m here to inspire and give hope! If a guy like me can do it, you can live your dreams too. Torley shares his frailties because he wants sympathy No! I have enough sympathy for myself, thankyouverymuch. I share my hardships m coming from, and how much I ve achieved despite them. This isn t just about me: it s about empowering others, so I don t take it personally as the parlance goes. If a high-functioning autistic (Asperger Syndrome) like me can become a beloved social pillar despite the handicaps I face compared to most, then others in situations who can relate will also be empowered. It also speaks to what an awesome company Linden Lab is: we hire diversely, not as token, but because there s excellence across genders, cultures, and neurodiversities! I am living proof of what I believe in. Second Life is a transformative tool and we ve had key communities like Dreams and Wheelies who ve supported each other by sharing experiences. You always put yourself at risk because someone will mock you for being different , but just remember: they re wrong and you re right for being strong. It s true as a business professional, it s not appropriate to encumber you with details of my private life, but when they re important to comprehending my motives affecting you, not unlike how game god Shigeru Miyamoto turned his hobbies into smash-hit games or how Steve Jobs health as it relates to Apple s succession is of public interest, then I ll share as-requested. Here was started because of [silly speculation] In Bizarro-World, maybe! Read the real story of Here, here. Torley runs the official blog and the forums Not anymore. I was one of the first Lindens to champion using the blog and teaching other Lindens how to blog, and I was forum admin for awhile after Jeska passed the torch. Currently, communications tools like this are overseen by Marketing/PR, with our Communications Manager Katt Linden happy to hear about your ideas. Let her know! My current role is Resident Enlightenment Manager: I spread knowledge about Second Life which increases understanding, particularly as it pertains to enjoying the inworld experience. My emphasis is on practical, everyday usefun (useful + fun). As such, my communications are focused on this, not on policy changes and other subjects. Torley is not a real person but a manufactured character, like Stephen Colbert, Perez Hilton, or There.com s Aral It s certainly true by virtue of having an avatar, some traits are exaggerated while others aren t mentioned. I don t express opinions that aren t my own. I really do love life, wife, and watermelons. And I am a human being behind the screen. Thump! There s a lot of wild speculation and stories about you That s not a myth. No colorful character, obscure or famous, has ever been free of this. People find me intriguing, and rightly so. (See Seth Godin s Purple Cow for the simple principles.) Remember, the watermelon visual catchphrases that help me transmit ideas. I wouldn t be so effective otherwise, and what s more important to me is hearing how my personality has encouraged you to express yourself, whether it s creating clothes t think possible before. I don t comment on speculation unless it s substantiated, and especially, would broadly benefit the company (Linden Lab) and customers (Residents) I m responsible to. And being an idoru/folk hero/mythical legend/Internet celebrity (lulz), that s something I ll have to live, and have fun with. As Morgana Skytower wrote: Torley Linden is awesome. I don t just mean he s a great guy, or that he s nice to old people and small animals, and regularly gives candy to small children. Maybe he does, I don t know. I ve never met him. He s so awesome I bet he eats rainbows for rbeakfast and drinks lightning. He s just that WOW. What do I mean? I mean Torley Linden is Cool amplified by the square root of badass times pi. Excuse me, I m going to take a break, have a bite out of the ol Roy G. Biv, and wash it down with some thunder smoothies. I m also going on vacation — but I ll return, rocking and rolling on!
Custom collision sounds - Video Tip of the Week #48Custom collision sounds - Video Tip of the Week #48
from Torley Lives
August 23, 2008

Hey, what’s that sound? The answer here is a little-known fact that needs to be spread more: you can customize the collision sound an object makes. That’s right, you can make a falling anvil sound like its cartoon counterpart, a glass can emit a startling “crash!”, or you can do something completely different to confound and astound bystanders. You can even silence an object (like thunky stairs). Even if you’ve never scripted before, you can do this with a simple script that requires 1 line of change. I show you how to do this, how to search for sounds on the web, and more! DOWNLOAD HIGH-QUALITY VERSION 00:48 - Building materials have different collision sounds 02:40 - How a script changes collision sound 03:48 - Search for sounds on the web 05:50 - Upload and insert the sound 06:16 - Create the custom collision sound script 08:15 - Silent collisions for stairs (and other stuff) Come to Here island afterwards to see the collision sounds I’ve got setup, including the falling peas. Add to your aural experience and enjoy the SLience! ;D If you re wondering why this is on my personal blog instead of the official Second Life Blog and why you haven t seen the KB Article of the Week lately either, it s because Linden Lab is undergoing changes in communication policy and preparing for future improvements. As much as that doesn t seem to make sense, I can t go into details now, and I would ve let you know earlier were it not for events beyond my control. Please pardon me, I promise to share more if/when I can do so. In the meantime, if you have ideas for how I can better help you by making video tutorials broadly visible in places I ve missed, let me know! -Torley Linden Resident Enlightenment Manager

Go outdoors and get some fresh… Second Life!Go outdoors and get some fresh… Second Life!
from Torley Lives
August 13, 2008

Oh irony, why must you be so ironic? Thanks to those who reminded me to go outdoors on previous Saturdays. The funny thing is, the cellphone reception in my house sucks, so I must do exactly that to use the Second Life-Vollee mobile viewer. The further into the field, the better. I previously wrote about my initial experiences, and I wanted to share some crisp shots which I took thanks to Ilium Screen Capture. I also like MyMobile for being able to view and control what’s happening on my AT&T HTC-8925 Tilt. Alas, like I said, I can’t effectively log on from indoors… so, gotta go to nature to get more connected with technology. Handling SL this way is reminiscent of playing games on a handheld device like a Game Gear. I know it’s not a big stretch from the smartphones of today, but still — feels retro. I noticed a couple bugs: (1) borked UI in the Friends list as you can see from pic #19 above, and (2) my inability to teleport via the normal way (it oddly does the same thing as “Show Destination”, altho I remember it working before), and will report them on the Vollee forums. Here’s what it looks like in front of my house:
“Who Killed Sparky?” sounds like “The Sky is Pink”“Who Killed Sparky?” sounds like “The Sky is Pink”
from Torley Lives
August 11, 2008

If you like excellent dancefloor fillers — COMPARE! Esp. towards the end: Sasha - “Who Killed Sparky?” Nathan Pink - “The Sky is Pink (James Holden Remix)” The first came second. I haven’t heard the two mixed adjacently in a set yet, but here’s an op. Both are magnificent tracks, but I prefer the former because it has a subtle edge of variation and excitement which I’ve hardly heard since Holden’s own “A Break in the Clouds”, prolly one of the bestest electronic musics of ALL-TIME. Another slice of delicious melodic + minimal (melinal? Minodic?) techy tuneage is Dada Life’s “Sweeter Than Fever (David West & Ida Engberg Remix)”: Download audio file (sweeter.mp3) It’s difficult to create something repetitious which grips and suspends you, pulling you into the next 8-bar section. But this does so, masterfully. Shame they’re relative rarities. But then again, those are the true gems, innit?
