ROCORI City Update * July 3, 2008
from DigElogROCORI July 03, 2008
*QUICKTIME *Phone Folks, it’s that time of year again. The weather is gorgeous and the boat’s been out of storage now for the last month. As the family and friends come into our gorgeous State, it’s important to remember a few safety items. In this story, our three city administrators discuss some issues regarding the 4th of July and what is going on in the ROCORI area. The subject that came up most in this story is the use of common sense. When on the lake or just out shooting some bottle rockets, please use good judgment and common sense. This is a time to celebrate our independence, not make a trip to the emergency room. DigElog ROCORI would like to wish everyone out there a safe and happy 4th of July. ************************************ Consumer Fireworks Information The sale, possession and use of certain non-explosive and non-aerial consumer fireworks is now permitted in Minnesota. Examples of legal fireworks include items such as sparklers, cones and tubes that emit sparks, and novelty items like snakes, and party poppers. A more detailed list is available at the link below. Consumer fireworks may not be used on public property (i.e. parks, roads, alleys, schools, government property, etc.). Purchasers of consumer fireworks must be at least 18 years old and retailers are required to check photo identification of purchasers before selling these products. Explosive and aerial fireworks are prohibited for public sale, possession and use. Prohibited fireworks include firecrackers, bottle rockets, missiles, roman candles, mortars and shells. Consumer Fireworks Fact Sheets, Fireworks Safety, Fireworks Recalls ************************************ VIEWER COMMENTS: Hi Duane - State law does not prohibit the use of legal fireworks within city limits. However state law also does not restrict local ordinances from doing so. I would recommend contacting city hall. if they have no ordinance you are allowed to use the fireworks within the city. If there is an ordinance you would have to comply within the specifics of the ordinance. Happy 4th. Representative Larry Hosch ***************** Duane, I'm not sure of Cold Spring's code... but generally use of fireworks is restricted in city limits... at least the 'illegal' types. Sparklers, snakes and party poppers... go to town with. I doubt anyone will care unless we are in a very dry spell where a fire hazard may be an issue. Dan Richmond City Administrator

WHNews: Prison Reform Update 02 July 08
from Woman's Hour News and Politics July 02, 2008
Published in March 07, the Corston Report on Vulnerable Women in the Criminal Justice System recommended several proposals to keep non violent women out of prison and rehabilitate them in the community, and for serious and dangerous offenders to be housed in smaller prisons. However, figures released this month reveal the women’s prison population reached a record high of 4,505 in June this year. So what recommendations has the government met and how far is it actually willing to go? Jenni is joined by the report’s author Baroness Corston and Juliet Lyon from the Prison Reform Trust to discuss the issues.

Seymour Hersh Reveals Covert Operations In Iran
from Open Culture July 01, 2008
A quick fyi: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersch has a new piece in The New Yorker detailing a major escalation of covert operations against Iran. The plans drafted by the Bush administration and funded by Congress brings the US another step closer to a military strike against Iran s nuclear program, and such a strike becomes all the more likely, Hirsch believes, if Obama wins the November election. (Why? Because Obama favors having direct talks rather than using preemptive force.) You can find an accompanying audio interview with Hersch here. He also appeared yesterday on NPR s Fresh Air and elaborated on all of this. You can listen here: Stream - iTunes - Feed. Download 250 Free Online Courses here Subscribe to our feed ShareThis
