The Battle for San Francisco
from the bikescape podcast July 02, 2008
Another in a series of podcasts from the Towards Car-free Cities Conference in Portland Oregon, Bikescape recorded a presentation about mobility and land use politics in San Francisco. From the origins of Critical Mass to the ascendency of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, the story is told by writer Chris Carlsson, Dave Snyder of San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, the SFBC's Leah Shahum, and CSU professor Jason Henderson. Snippets from the Trans March
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 28, 2008
I kicked off this Holigay with the San Francisco Trans March. In anticipation for the march, people (and their dogs) gather at Dolores Park to mingle and rally-up. The performance stage captures a willing audience, but I spent this time distracted by all my friends, acquaintances and all the hot people. The March began in a fairly typical manner; banners, chanting, fabulous outfits. The magic reached its climax when the Trans March collided with Critical Mass, a monthly bicycle demonstration. People from both contingencies were cheering and screaming. Bicyclists raised their bicycles above their heads. After a few minutes at the convergence on Market and Castry, many bicyclists joined the March. You can check out snippets of incidental video from the March.

Episode #23 - Critical Mass
from Greentime March 21, 2008
As we mentioned in our previous episode, we re starting to reach out and try to engage groups in the community involved in green issues and activism. Rhett s become very passionate about his bike riding and using his bike as a commuter (he now frequently day-trips to Boca Raton and Miami in addition to riding in town), and so he decided to become more involved with Critical Mass, an unorganized coincidence of bicycle advocates. In this episode, Rhett also tries out Tri-Rail and MetroRail, two critical links in the South Florida mass transit system. As you ll see, their efficiency on the weekends isn t great part of the reason Rhett s finally just started cycling long distances. Interested in joining a Critical Mass ride? If you live in South Florida, you can join Rhett on rides with Miami Critical Mass and meet members of Emerge Miami. Check the link above for rides in other areas. Don t have one in your area? Why not start one? Formats available: MPEG-4 Video (.m4v), Quicktime (.mov) Tags: bike, bicycle, activism, critical mass, miami, green, greentime, green issues, green lifestyle, environmentalism

2007: a look back
from bikescape January 12, 2008
Let's recap the year, shall we? In this episode I collect all of the random recordings I made over the year but failed to include in any shows. We spend some time at last summer's Shake your Peace Festival where we met the B:C:Clettes, a bike ballet troupe and listened to a bicycle-based musical device called Antsy Pants. Then we meet up with Critical Mass at (Peewee) Herman Plaza as the crowd gathers to discuss whether the ride is still relevant after fifteen years. We also check in with my six-year-old as she learns to ride on two wheels. Next, we get updates on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District's embarrassing memo from HR that forbade employees from riding their bikes in the course of their duties, as well as lots of other news from the two wheeled world. the state of cycling in the uk
from bikescape August 06, 2007
In this episode we look at biking in the United Kingdom. We chat with Jack Thurston of London's Bike Show on Resonance FM. Then we get Josh Hart on the line to talk about his take on transportation in the UK as an American expat student of urban planning in Bristol. Jack spoke of London's success with their downtown Congestion Charge . Join Josh and his friends at Heathrow Airport Camp for Climate Action as they protest the proposed doubling of the air traffic there. Josh avoided cars and planes on his trip to Bristol to avoid undoing all of the good he's done by biking. More on your carbon footprint. Check out the pictures of the life size mousetrap at the heavy pedal cyclecide bike rodeo this year where the contraption worked as advertised a record two times in a row!
